| Our Purpose |
What We Do |
| The purposes of the Northwest Democrats are to work for the election of Democratic candidates at the local, state and national level through its volunteer activities; to inform the membership of, and to advise action on, pertinent political issues; to encourage voter registration and turnout and to perform certain community services as approved by the membership. |
Northwest Democrats believe in political ACTION with an emphasis on ACTION. Our members are encouraged to participate in Democratic primaries by WORKING for the election of candidates of their choice.
During the general election we come together as experienced political activists to make a strong Democratic impact in northwest Bexar County for the entire Democratic ticket.
Between partisan elections we concentrate on our community and those nonpartisan elections which affect all of us, such as city, school board, Edwards Aquifer and state constitutional amendments.
We continually seek to educate ourselves by inviting key persons involved in the political process to speak before our membership.
In addition, our organization is actively involved in our environment and have adopted the two mile stretch of Eckhert Road between Bandera Road and Huebner for trash pickup.
During the 1996 general election campaign, our membership delivered literature for all our Democratic candidates to over 25,000 northwest Bexar County homes. |

How We Started |
While Northwest Democrats has accepted the following boundaries as its particular area of responsibility, Democrats from throughout the county and the state are invited to participate in their meetings and other activities:
IH10 (north) to 410 to Fredericksburg; East to Hillcrest; South on Hillcrest to Bandera; West on Bandera to Broadview; South on Broadview to West Commerce; West on West Commerce to Callaghan; South on Callaghan to Hwy. 90; West on Hwy. 90 to the Bexar County line; North on the Bexar County line to IH10. |
Northwest Democrats was organized as a direct result of a seemingly casual question asked by Darby Riley in March 1992, as he chaired the 26th Senatorial District convention, held at the Leon Valley Community Center. During a dead spot in the program, Darby asked the approximately three hundred delegates in attendance how they felt about creating a Democratic organization focused on the northwest part of the county.
The popular belief for many years was that the area was Republican, so why should Democrats work in it. Bob Drumm followed Darby to the microphone, made a motion to form a northwest Democratic organization, and asked that those interested in participating sign a sheet expressing their willingness to be involved. Over fifty people signed. Darby was assigned the responsibility of organizing the first meeting.
The first meeting was held at Luby's on Bandera Road in August 1992 on a Friday morning. Saturday mornings were determined to be the best time for future meetings. These early meetings were very productive. Between forty to sixty people regularly attended, and a phone bank was organized in support of the Clinton/Gore campaign for the November '92 election.
Darby Riley was the first chair of Northwest Democrats from 1992-1994; Lloyd Phillips served as chair from 1994-1996, and Joyce Dorrycott has served as chair since December of 1996. |
