| How Often Should Baby Nurse? |

I was told to let baby nurse every 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours. Every time baby cries. Put baby on a schedule, - nurse on demand. There were so many conflicting philosphies. Ultimately, it will be up to you and your baby how often baby nurses.
The best advice I was given was every time the baby cries, pick him up. Cuddle him, while checking the diaper. Then if he is still fussy, burp him. Finally, after trying all this - feed him. My son did not require burping. You could pat that baby on the butt or back until your hand fell off, but he was not going to burp! So consequently, I skipped that step. But, I have never outgrown the habit of checking his diaper every time I picked him up!
Some times your baby will develope what they call "Cluster Feeding". This means that baby will suckle for 5 - 15 minutes, and then go to sleep. Baby will wake up 15 - 45 minutes later, and want to nurse again. This can go on for 3 or 4 hours. My son developed this feeding pattern and there was nothing I could do about it. My efforts to "break this bad habit" just made us both miserable and I quit trying. It is tough. It seems like all you do is sit there with this baby attached to your breast all day. It can be rather depressing, but hang in there! My son outgrew this pattern when he was about 3 1/2 months old.
And I learned - don't sweat the dishes or laundry, they will be there later and the house will not fall down! Use paper products and put the laundry in to wash at night. The days of this will be a dim memory one day. All too soon you will be dragging the kid out of the cupboard for the millionth time, (or removing something really icky from his mouth and wondering where he got it!) and you will miss these quiet days. So cherish them. And remember... These things too will pass.
