When I started nursing my son, I had no clue that there could be complications to breastfeeding. There are several conditions, including sore nipples, you can experience.

Sore nipples are the most common problem. So are cracked and bleeding nipples. As your nipples get used to the baby suckling, they will toughened up and not hurt so much. In the mean time, go to the drug store and look in the baby department and get some lanolin nipple treatment. Make sure it is for your nipples - not hand cream. It has to be food grade for nipples so it does not contain anything harmful to your baby.

Make sure baby is getting enough of your nipple in her mouth. The nipple should be entirely in her mouth, as well as a large portion of your aurole, the colored part around your nipple. If the baby is not getting enough of your nipple in their mouth, it will make you sore. Even now, with my baby one year old, if he does not get enough of the nipple in his mouth it will make me very sore.

Always wear soft cotton undergarments when your nipples are sore. Once again, nylon abraded my nipples - cotton did not. Nice soft fleece feels good too, just leaves you a little fuzzy, so you may have to pick off the lint!

When your milk comes in, sometimes you will leak. This will happen especially if you are pumping your milk. Your supply will increase to your demand, so pumping your milk increases your production. Be sure to keep your nipples dry when this happens. Change your nipple pads frequently, even if the pad does not feel wet. When you buy you nipple pads, rub one on your cheek to test for softness. I got one box that I threw away after wearing one for 2 hours!

You can get a yeast infection in your nipples from them being wet too much. Now that does not include the amount of time they are in the baby's mouth! Only the amount of time they are in a damp, dark environment - your bra. The symptons are VERY sore nipples, to the point you can hardly bear to have the baby latch on, very dark and red nipples. If you think you may have an infection like this - GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!! The treatment is simple - apply a vaginal yeast cream several times a day and expose your nipples to light and air as much as possible - but you must ALWAYS see a health care professional when it comes to your baby's and your health!! (Not to mention it hurts washing that cream off to feed baby, so why go thru that if it is just sore nipples? ) You also cannot save breast milk for very long when you have a yeast infection , so you have to know for sure if that is the problem.

Blocked milk ducts is another problem that can arise. It is literally when one of your milk ducts get clogged and the milk cannot get thru it. It is very uncomfortable, with your breast enlarging somewhat and slight burning in the area. There will also be a hard bump or lump. That is the clogged duct. Massage it - even though it hurts, and take a warm shower. Apply a warm wet towel. Alternate massage and warm wet towels.

If it still does not help, try this one. Dangle your breast in a bowl of warm water. Sounds tricky? It can be. The trick to this one is using a higher counter top or table so you are only bending over slightly. If you have to bend over at the waist it is very awkward. Or you could always just go take a nice warm buble bath and massage that milk duct. Be prepared - when the clog is worked out, you are going to need to empty that breast. It will leak, or spray if you were really backed up, all over. So have towel handy, or the baby!

You can also develope an abcess in a milk duct, but this is extremely rare. In these cases they make a small incision in the breast to drain the abcess.

These complications are rare, so don't worry over much about them. If you are so sore to the point you cringe at the thought of latching baby on, then you should consult your doctor.
