Selecting a Bra
Selecting the Right Bra Is More Important Than You Think!

There are some things that the professionals just don't seem to think to point out to a new mom who is unfamiliar with breastfeeding an infant. They will cover the mechanics - but little things like comfort aren't real high on their list.

When you look at nursing bras - forget style and fashion. Their is no such thing as a sexy nursing bra! The most important thing here is how it feels on, and how easy it is to get your breast out of the thing. Remember - at 2 AM when you are exhausted you don't care what it looks like as long as you can manage the hooks or clips half asleep -that is what makes it a good bra!!

Make sure the lining is soft - preferably cotton. That is going to be rubbing on your nipple all day and night long. Nylon, even satin nighties, made my nipples very sore at this time.

Practice opening the flap with one hand - with one eye closed - or not even looking. Can you manage to open it without mangling it? It will take practice, but even so, make sure it is easy.

Underwire bras can cause complications to your milk production. If the wire digs in to your breast at all, it can clog a milk duct without your being aware that it is digging in to you. Be careful about underwire bras -maybe using them for only when you want to go out and need the extra lift.

Make sure the cup is big enough. This is something I particularly have a problem with. I wear a DD and could really use a larger size as half my breast is not covered by the cup. I have not been able to find them locally - only custom which was extrememly pricey. Where the cup ends on my breast, I have to careful to not let it dig in. Just like the under wire digging into your flesh, the cup can do the same thing, clogging a milk duct. This is very painful.

Try to avoid tight bras, jogging or sports bras. Not only will they be very uncomfortable, they will inhibit milk production. Don't be scared to buy a bra 1 or 2 cup sizes bigger than you normally wear. The milk will increase your breast size, helping you fill it up.

Also, don't think you do not need a bra now. The milk will fill you up an dmake you feel firmer, but your breast now weighs more, which means the fragile breast tissue will break down more easily now. This is what will give you saggy breasts after weaning baby. To reduce the amount you sag afterwards, you need to wear a good bra now.
