Chapter 20
“Wait! There’s a pulse! Let’s get him into the
ambulance!” Tallia
looked up. JC was alive!
“I want to go with him!” The EMT’s allowed Tallia
to ride to the
hospital with JC. When they got to the hospital, JC
was whisked into
surgery right away. Tallia called Suzi. “Hello?”
“Suzi?!”
“Lia? What are you doing? What’s wrong?”
“Josh was shot tonight. Mike found us and he shot
Josh. We’re at
the hospital now. He’s in surgery. Mike’s dead,” she
said, in a rush.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah, all he did to me was hit me. I don’t know
what I’ll do if I
lose Josh. I never told him how much I loved him!”
“He’ll be fine, honey. He has to come back to you.
Look, I’ll call
the rest of the group and we’ll come over. Which
hospital are you at?”
“The one I was in the first time Mike beat me.”
“K. We’ll be there in a little while,” Suzi said,
and hung up the
phone.

Forty-five minutes later....
JC’s and Tallia’s friends rushed into the emergency
room waiting
room.
“How is he?” asked Justin, concerned.
“I don’t know, I haven’t heard,” Tallia replied.
Justin walked over
Tallia and hugged her.
“How are you doing?”
“I’m scared. I feel bad, because he never should
have been in the
middle of all of this,” she said.
“Lia, he wanted to be with you. There was nothing
you could do,”
Joey said. They all sat down in the waiting room,
nervously waiting.
After a few hours, a doctor came into the waiting
room.
“Are you here for Josh?” he asked. Tallia stood
up.
“Yes, how is he?”
“He just got out of surgery. He’s still under, but
I can let two of you
in to see him. You can’t stay very long. The bullet
just missed a main
artery, but he still lost a lot of blood.”
“I want to go,” Tallia said.
“I’ll go with you,” Justin said. They followed the
doctor to JC’s
room. Justin took Tallia’s hand and gave it a
reassuring squeeze.
Tallia walked over to the side of JC’s bed. She could
feel the tears
welling up in her eyes. She took JC’s hand.
“You come back to me Josh. I want to tell you how
much I love
you!” Tallia said, with a weak smile. She turned to
Justin. He spoke a
few words to JC and then they went back out into the
waiting room.
After the doctor had updated them on JC’s condition,
Chris, Kristina,
Joey, Suzi, Lance, Davette, Justin and Kiera decided
to go home and
get some sleep. They would come back tomorrow. They
tried to get
Tallia to come home with them, but she wouldn’t budge.
She wasn’t
going to leave until she got to see JC awake. Her
friends reluctantly
left, saying they would be back the next day. After
they left, Tallia fell
into an uneasy sleep on the couch in the waiting room.

When she woke up, it was 4 am. She couldn’t sleep,
so she went and
asked a nurse if she could peek in on JC. The nurse
wasn’t supposed
to let her, but she could see how much Tallia loved
JC.
Tallia crept into JC’s room. She put a chair
beside his bed and took
his hand in hers. She spoke to him quietly. She sat
back, still holding
JC’s hand. She was still like that when the nurse
came into to check on
JC at 7 am. The nurse told her he was doing good.
Tallia looked at JC. The nurse said that JC could
hear the things she
was saying to him, so if she wanted to talk to him,
that would be fine.

Somewhere in the dark, JC heard a voice saying, “I
love you.” He
moved towards the voice, but a felt a sharp pain, in
his left shoulder.
He tried to fight the pain, but it was too much and he
blacked out.

Chapter 21
A little while later....
Tallia saw his eyelids flutter. She stood up.
“What? Where...” he asked.
“Josh. Just lay still. You’re in the hospital.
Mike shot you,” Tallia said.
“Tally. I want to tell you...” he tried to say.
“Shhh, don’t worry. I’ll be here. You’re just
lucky you came back to
me! Or I would have came after you,” she joked,
weakly. She saw
JC’s weak smile. Then his eyes closed and he was
asleep again.
Tallia stood up and went out into the waiting room.
Her friends were
back. They stood up when she came out.
“How’s JC?” asked Suzi.
“He woke up for a few minutes and talked to me,”
she replied. “I think he’s just weak, because he lost a lot of blood.”

JC was in the hospital for 5 days, until he gained
enough strength to drive the nurses crazy! He wanted to go home, and he
kept pestering them. Tallia was finally able to take him home on the
fifth day. The nurses joked that they wouldn’t miss him.

Tallia drove JC to his house. She was his “nurse”
for the next few weeks.
“Josh, I’m sorry about what happened to you,” she
said.
“Tally, it wasn’t your fault. Mike lost it. He’s
the one to blame, and
he’s gone,” JC argued.
“But, if you wouldn’t have been around me, you
wouldn’t have been shot,” she said.
“Listen to me, I didn’t want to be any place, but
with you! I care
about you!” He wrapped his good arm around her and
pulled her
close. He kissed her, softly.

Chapter 22
Two months later....
Tallia was running around her apartment, getting
ready for her date
with JC. It was their six month anniversary tonight.
She was just
putting her earrings in, when the bell rang.
“Coming!” she ran to the
door. “Hey Josh!” she said. She kissed him and then
grabbed her purse.
“Hey Tally,” JC said.
“I’m almost ready,” she said.
“You look beautiful,” he said. She smiled at him.
“So do you.”
“I look beautiful?”
“Yes,” she said. She reached for him and kissed
him.
“You’d better stop that, or we’ll never get to
dinner,” JC said.
“That’s fine with me,” Tallia replied.
“No, we’d better go,” JC said. Tallia followed him
downstairs.
When they reached the restaurant, Tallia realized it
was the one where they had first met, ‘The Jade Palace’. How sweet she
thought. Once inside the restaurant, they ordered. After they
finished their meals, JC and Tallia sat and talked. A waiter brought over the
check and two fortune cookies. JC quickly grabbed one, and Tallia
took the other.
Tallia noticed JC was acting kind of strange, but
shrugged it off. She
started to open her fortune cookie. She looked up to
see JC watching her, expectantly.
“What?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing, just curious to see what your fortune
says,” he said.
He watched as Tallia pulled out the scrap of paper in
her cookie.
“‘Will you marry me? Love Josh.’ Oh, my god!” she
cried. She felt
tears of joy in her eyes. “Yes! Yes I will! I love
you!” JC got down
on one knee in front of her.
“Will you marry me?” as he pulled a black velvet
box out of his pocket.
“You know I will!” JC kissed her. Tallia could
hear the people around them clapping.

They were married 9 months later, with Sara, Davette and Kristina as Tallia’s bridesmaids and Kiera as Maid of Honor. Joey, Lance and Chris stood beside JC and Justin was JC’s best man. It wasn’t long before the rest of the group
followed in their footsteps and teenage hearts all over the world broke. But
there was still the Backstreet Boys!
