Chapter 9
A few days later....
Tallia was wound up tighter than a clock. She
couldn’t seem to
relax since Mike’s call. He hadn’t called since, but
she was still a
bundle of nerves. Suzi had stayed with her the first
few nights, but
Tallia realized that she couldn’t have Suzi stay with
her forever and
sent her home. Suzi had protested, but Tallia was
stubborn and had
held out. She was going to overcome this. She wasn’t going to let Mike ruin her life.
She sat down on the couch and thought about Josh.
She hadn’t
talked to him in a while. Not since she had came to
the realization that
she could be falling for him. That had been almost
two weeks ago.
Now the thought of talking to him made her nervous.
She knew she
was being silly. She was also a little afraid to even
think about starting
any kind of a relationship with a guy. She was
jumping ahead of
herself. Josh hadn’t even indicated that he was
interested in her that
way. She knew she should call him, but she didn’t know
what to say.
She picked up the phone and dialed his number. His
machine picked
up, so she left a message, “Hey stranger. This is
Tally. I was just
calling to see what you were up to! I have yet
another new number.
It’s 555-8902. I guess I’ll talk to you later. Bye.”
She was kind of
relieved that he wasn’t home.
She was kind of tired, so she laid down on the
couch and fell asleep.
Joey’s house.....
JC picked up his cell phone to call Tally. He
hadn’t heard from her
in almost two weeks. When he dialed her number, all
he got was a
message saying that the number was no longer in
service. He was
disappointed, now he had no way to get a hold of her.
“Hey JC! Let’s go! We have to get to the
studio!” Lance said. JC
got up and followed Lance outside, where the others
were waiting. He
rode to the studio with Justin, while Chris and Joey had gone with Lance.
“JC, where are you at? You seem like you’re a
million miles away!”
Justin said.
“Huh? Oh, sorry. I’m just thinking,” JC replied.
“About?”
“Oh, nothing.”
“Ahhh, a girl! I see. Tell me about her.”
“How did you...never mind. I kind of met this
girl. She’s really nice,
but I’m worried about her. She’s kind of in trouble with her ex boyfriend.”
“I think you should forget about her. Come with me and meet Kiera’s friend, Lia.”
“I can’t, Justin. I can’t get her out of my
mind.”
“I just want you to be as happy as I am with
Kiera,” Justin said.
“I know, and I appreciate it, but I’m not
interested in meeting Lia.”
“Ok. I’ll tell the guys to lay off.”
“Thanks.”
“So, are you ready for the tour?” Their new tour
would begin in
July, less than two months. JC loved to tour, but he
wanted to figure
things out with Tally before than.
“Yeah. I just want to get things settled here,
first.”
“I’m thinking about asking Kiera to come with us
for the first two
months of the tour, until she has to go back to
college.”
“When did you finally tell her about being in ‘N
Sync?”
“I didn’t have to tell her. She knew pretty much
right away. We
were talking one night and she mentioned it, to my surprise. She seemed really cool about it.”
“Do the other guys’ girlfriends know?”
“Yeah. I think they are going to ask them to come
with us, too.”
“Oh,” JC said. Now, more than ever, he wanted to
figure things out.
He pushed it to the back of his mind as they pulled up outside the studio.
It was late when the guys left the studio, and it
was after midnight
when JC got home. He checked his messages and was
pleased to hear
one from Tally. He looked at the clock and knew that
it was too late to
call her. He would call her the first thing in the
morning.
Chapter 10
The next morning.....
Tallia woke up and stretched. She was sore. She
had slept through
the night on the couch. Josh had not called. She
told herself not to be
disappointed, but she was. She walked into the
bathroom and turned
on the shower. She spent a half hour in the shower.
She got out and
put on some shorts and a t-shirt. She didn’t notice the light on her answering machine flashing.
She picked up her keys and headed outside. She
got in her jeep and
headed for Davette’s. She knew that Davette had the
day off, so she
was going to go and see if she wanted to do something.
When she
pulled up in front of Davette’s house, she saw Lance’s
car parked
there. She smiled. It seemed things were going well
for her friends.
She was happy for them. She felt a small pang of
sadness and jealousy,
that she didn’t have a guy as great as her friends
each had.
She got out of her jeep and walked to the door.
It only took Davette
a few seconds to answer the door.
“Hey Lia! What are you doing?” Lance said, as Tallia walked into the living room.
“Hi Lance. Not much, what are you up to?” Tallia
sat on the living
room couch, facing Lance and Davette.
At JC’s.....
JC wondered where Tally was. He hoped she was
okay. Since the
phone call when he had heard her boyfriend slapping
her, he worried
about her. He left his cell phone number on her
answering machine so
she would be able to get a hold of him, if he wasn’t
home. He got into
his Cherokee and dialed Lance’s cell phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey Lance, what are you doing?”
“Hey! I’m at Davette’s house. Why don’t you come
over?”
“Who’s all over there right now?”
“Davette, me and Lia.”
“Lance, you know I don’t want to be set up,” JC
said.
“I know. You guys can be friends, can’t you?”
“Yeah, but I can’t come over right now, anyway.
I’ve got some stuff
to get done before tonight’s rehearsal. I just called to ask you something.”
“Shoot.”
“I still haven’t met Tally. Do you think I should
push it and ask to
meet her the next time I talk to her? I mean, I
really like her.”
“I don’t know. Has she ever said anything about
meeting?”
“Once, during our second conversation.”
“Maybe you should let her bring up the subject of
meeting.”
“Maybe your right. I don’t want to scare her off.
Maybe I’ll stop by
Davette’s if I get everything done.”
“Ok. I’ll talk to ya later.”
“Bye.”
Chapter 11
A few hours later....
JC pulled up to Davette’s house and got out of his
Cherokee. He
noticed that Chris and Joey’s vehicles were here. He
walked up to the
door and knocked. He wasn’t prepared for anyone but
Davette to
answer the door. When a tall, beautiful red head answered the door, he stood there speechless.
“Can I help you?” she asked.
“Uh, hi. I’m Lance’s friend, JC,” he said.
“Oh. I’m Lia. Come on in,” she said, as she swung
open the door.
JC stepped inside and waited for her to shut the door.
He followed her
into the living room. She sat down in an unoccupied chair. Everyone greeted him.
“So, I guess you met Lia,” said Suzi. JC couldn’t
take his eyes off of
her. He shook his head and told himself to forget it.
He wasn’t
interested.
Tallia felt really uncomfortable, so she stood up,
“I’ll be right back, I
want to make a phone call.” She went into the kitchen
and dialed
Josh’s number. When his machine picked up, she
replaced the phone in
the receiver without leaving a message. She wondered where he could be.
She walked back into the living room and sat down.
Her friends had
been right about JC, he was really cute, but that was
only an outer
appearance. She had learned her lesson once, never
trust appearances,
they can be deceiving. Mike was proof of that. She
was just about to
get up and get ready to go home, when the guys got up
and said that
they had to go to rehearsal. Tallia felt awkward as
her friends said
goodbye to their boyfriends. She and JC just stood
there, looking
uncomfortable. As soon as they were gone, her friends settled themselves in the living room.
“How about we have a girl fest?” said Kristina.
“We can go and get
some movies and junk food and come back here and have
a girls night.”
“Sounds like fun,” Kiera said.
“How about Davette, Suzi, and I go and get the
movies, and you two
go and get the junk?” Kristina said.
“Ok. Do you have any requests for junk?” asked
Kiera.
“Whatever, as long as there is chocolate involved!”
Suzi said,
grinning. “Any specific movies?”
“I wouldn’t mind watching ‘Dirty Dancing,’” Tallia
said.
“Mmmm, Patrick Swayze. What a hunk!” Kristina
said.
Kiera and Tallia got into Kiera’s pickup and headed
for the store.
They picked up some popcorn, ice cream, chocolate
topping, and a few
other things. They were just pulling up in the driveway when Suzi and Kristina pulled up.
“What did ya get?” asked Kristina.
“Movie stuff, ice cream, popcorn, cookie dough,”
said Kiera.
“Did you get my chocolate?” asked Suzi.
“Chocolate? Did we get chocolate Lia?” asked
Kiera.
“Chocolate? I think we forgot it,” Tallia said,
with a grin.
“Don’t ever tease me about my chocolate,” grinned
Suzi. They all
went into the house and got everything ready for the
movie night.
They were just starting the second movie ‘Scream,’
when they heard a
knock on the door. Davette jumped up and went to
answer the door.
She was surprised at who stood on the other side of
the door.
Chapter 12
“What are you guys doing here? I thought you were supposed to be at rehearsal,” said Davette.
“Well, we could go back if you want us to,” Lance said. “We’d rather be here, though.”
“Come on in. We’re just sitting here watching
movies,” Davette
stepped back so they could enter. They all went into
the living room.
The girls were all surprised but happy to see their
boyfriends.
“I thought you guys had to work,” Kiera said.
“I’d rather be here with you,” Justin said, and
gave her a kiss.
“Works for me,” Kiera said, as she snuggled up
against him. Tallia
looked around the room. Joey was sitting with Suzi in
a huge bean bag
chair. Lance was sitting on one love seat with
Davette. Kristina was
sitting in an oversized arm chair with Chris and,
Justina and Kiera were
sitting on the long couch. They made no move to make
room for JC, so
he hung back. Tallia noticed and sat up to make room
for JC to sit
with her. She was sitting on the other love seat, so there wasn’t much room for them to sit apart.
Tallia was uncomfortable. She felt like she and JC
were being pushed
together. She knew her friends had the best
intentions at heart, but she
was not interested in JC. She settled back to watch
the movie. Even
though she had seen the movie before, she still jumped
every time the
killer(s) hacked away with his knife. At one point in
the movie, she
grabbed JC’s arm. When she realized what she had
done, she pulled
back, her face red. She watched the rest of the
movie, conscious of JC
sitting only six inches from her. She had to get out of here. She stood up after the movie was over.
“I think I’m going to go home. I’m really tired,”
she said.
“Come on, Lia. Stay for one more movie,” pleaded
Kiera.
“Naw, I’m really tired. Besides I need to make a
few phone calls,”
she said. “It was fun. I’ll talk to you girls tomorrow.” Kiera stood up to walk Tallia out to her car.
When they got out to her car, Kiera said, “I didn’t know they were coming back, I swear.”
“That’s okay. I’m just tired. I want to go and call Josh before it’s too late to call.”
“Well, call me tomorrow. I don’t have to work,”
Kiera said, as she
gave Tallia a hug. Tallia nodded and got into her
jeep. The drive to
her apartment was short. When she got home, she
noticed the light
flashing on her answering machine. She pushed play.
*beep* “Hey Tally! This is Josh, I was just trying
to call you back.
If you want, give me a call on my cell phone at
555-1249. *beep* “End
of messages.” Tallia picked up the phone to call Josh
back. She was
just about to hang up after the fifth ring, when Josh
answered.
“Hello?”
“Hey Josh. What are you doing?”
“Just hangin’ out with some friends. Hold on a
second, I want to
move so we can talk without all of my friends
listening,” Tallia heard
some rustling, then Josh said, “Okay. So, how are you
doing?”
“Ok. I moved and had to get another phone number.
Mike was able
to get his hands on my new one somehow.”
“Oh, that’s what happened. I tried to call your
number a few times,
but all I ever got was that is was disconnected. So, you’re living by yourself again?”
“Yeah. The first day in my new place, Mike called,
so I changed my
phone number. I was really scared, so one of my
friends stayed with
me for a few days. I sent her home, though. I’m not
gonna let Mike
win. He’s not gonna make me look over my shoulder constantly. I did get a restraining order, though.”
“I’m glad. You know if you ever need anything, I’m
here,” he said,
quietly. He wanted so badly to tell her that he
really liked her, but he
held back, knowing he might scare her.
“Thanks Josh. I’m glad you called the wrong number
that day.”
“I didn’t call the wrong number. I think I called
the right number.”
That was the closest he had come to telling her how he
felt. “So, have
you heard anything about the trial?”
“I have to testify in two weeks. I’m nervous. I
know he’s out on bail
right now, but I don’t think he would take a chance on
coming near me
right now, with the restraining order in effect. I live in a secure building, too.”
“Good, I have to admit, after hearing him slap you,
I worry about
you,” he said. Tallia was touched. He was the
sweetest guy she had
‘never’ met. How ironic, she thought. They sat for a few seconds in silence.
JC was just about to suggest that maybe they could
go out to dinner
sometime, when Tallia said, “Well, I guess I’d better let you get back to your friends.”
“Oh, ok. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Ok, bye.” Tallia hung up the phone. She thought
about the
upcoming trial. She didn’t look forward to having to
face Mike again.

Chapter 13
The next day....
Tallia had spent the night tossing and turning,
both in bed and in her
mind. First she thought of Josh, then Mike and the
trial. Her thoughts
of Josh were mixed. She really loved talking with him
on the phone,
but that was on the phone. Would things change if
they met in person?
She was also scared, not of Josh, just of
relationships in general. She
knew that she was ahead of herself. Maybe all Josh
wanted was a
friend. That couldn’t hurt, could it?
She couldn’t wait until the trial was over and Mike
was behind bars
where he belonged. She never wanted him to hurt
anyone again. She
was tired of looking over her shoulder, expecting him
to be there.
There was no use sitting around here thinking about him, she picked up the phone to call Kiera.
“Hello?”
“Hey Justin. Is Kiera there?”
“Hey Lia. Yeah, just a minute,” he said.
“Hey you. What’s up?”
“Not much. I was wondering if you wanted to do
something today.
Unless you and Justin had something planned.”
“We’re going to a baseball game today. We have an extra ticket if you want to come,” she offered.
“Sure. It beats sitting at home. I’ll be over in
a little while.”
“Ok. See ya in a few.” Tallia hung up the phone
and grabbed a few
things then headed for her jeep. When she pulled up
at Kiera’s house,
she noticed a vehicle she didn’t recognize. She
shrugged it off. The
door opened and Kiera, Justin and JC stepped out.
“Hey Lia!” Kiera said.
“Lia!” Justin said. “Let’s play ball!” he said,
heading for his car.
Kiera, Tallia and JC got into Justin’s car. Kiera in
the front with Justin
and Tallia in the back with JC. Kiera and Justin kept
a running
conversation all the way to the park. JC and Tallia sat in silence, in the back seat.
When they got to the park, they found their seats
and waited for the
game to start. Kiera had somehow managed it so that JC and Tallia were sitting next to each other.
“We’ll be right back. We’re going to get some drinks. You two want anything?” Kiera asked.
Tallia and JC sat in silence. JC finally broke the silence, “So, who do you want to win?”
“I want the Cubs to win. I’m a big Cubs fan!”
Tallia said.
“So, you really like sports?” he asked.
“Yeah. I like playing and watching. I guess you
must like sports, to
be here?” she said. Tallia looked into JC’s
incredible blue eyes and felt
like she was standing on dangerous ground. She knew
she was
attracted to him. She felt torn between getting to
know the guy sitting
next to her and liking a guy she had never met.
They continued talking until Justin and Kiera got
back. The game
was just starting, so they turned their attention to
the field. When her
favorite player, Mark Grace came up to bat, Tallia
leaned forward.
*crack* He hit the ball, and it was headed in their
direction. They all
stood up. JC came away with the souvenir, which he
handed to Tallia.
She was so excited she hugged him. When she realized
what she had
done, she pulled away and blushed.
“Thanks, JC,” she said.
“No, problem.”
They watched the rest of the game, the Cubs beating
the Marlins 7-2.
After the game, they went out to get a bite to eat.
The whole time in
the restaurant, Tallia felt like someone was watching
her. She
shrugged it off and chalked it up to nerves.
Other side of the restaurant....
Mike watched Tallia with her friends. How dare the
bitch come here
with someone else, he thought. She would get what she
deserved,
soon. Very soon. He had it all planned out. He was
just waiting for
the right moment to execute his plan.
Chapter 14
Later that day....
When they got back to Kiera’s house, Tallia decided
to go home and
call Josh. She had decided it was time to meet. When
she got home,
she picked up the phone and dialed his home number.
There was no
answer, so she dialed his cell phone. No answer
there, either. So, she
dialed his home number and left a message. She
changed into her
swimming suit and took her cordless phone outside, to
lay by the pool.
She was just dozing off, when the phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hey Tally.”
“Josh! What’s up?”
“Not much, what are you doing?”
“Just laying out by the pool.”
“Cool.”
“Listen, I wanted to ask you something,” she said.
She was really
nervous.
“Shoot,” he said.
“I was wondering if you would like to have dinner
with me this
Friday?” Josh sat in silence, shocked by the
question. “If you don’t
want to, that’s okay,” Tallia said.
“No, I’d love to! I was just surprised!”
“Good! Do you have any place that you want to go?”
“Any place is fine with me.”
“How about the ‘Jade Palace?’” she asked. She love
Chinese food,
she hoped Josh did, too.
“Ahh, you hit my weak spot, Chinese food. I love
it!” he said.
“You do? Me too!” she said. “I want to bring a friend with me, if that’s okay.”
“Sure, I’ll bring a friend, too,” they made plans
to meet that Friday.
After she hung up with Josh, she called Kristina to
ask her if she
would go with her on Friday. Kristina agreed, knowing how nervous Tallia was.

JC’s house....
After JC got off the phone with Tally, he called
Chris. He knew
Chris wouldn’t give him a hard time about meeting
Tally. He agreed to
go with JC to meet Tally. So, it was all set, he was
meeting Tally,
finally. He couldn’t wait. He thought about Lia.
She was beautiful,
but he didn’t know her. He knew Tally from their
telephone
conversations. She was smart, funny and sweet.
