Chapter 4
Tallia could hear the distant ring of the telephone,
but tried to
push it to the back of her mind and go back to sleep.
She couldn’t shut
the sound out, so she picked up the phone beside her
bed, “‘lo?” she
mumbled
“What are you doing lazy bones?”
“Kieeeeeerrrrrraaaa, I’m sleeping,” she moaned.
“Sorry!”
“You don’t sound sorry,” Tallia said, suspiciously.
“I’m not. I just wanted to call and see what your
plans were for
the day.”
“Hmmm. I’m thinking sleep and laze around. Why?
What are
you doing?”
“Well, Justin invited me and the others, you
included, to a
BBQ,” Kiera said.
“Nope.”
“Why not?”
“I know what you’re up to, and it’s not going to
work,” Tallia
said.
“What do you mean?” Kiera said, trying to sound
innocent.
“I don’t want to be set up with Justin’s friend.”
“Why? Don’t tell me it’s because of that Josh guy.”
“No, it has nothing to do with him. I’m just not
ready to meet
anyone new right now.”
“Okay,” Kiera said, sounding defeated.
“Call me when you get back and let me know how things
went,
k?”
“Ok, I’ll talk to you later. Bye.”
“Bye.”

At the BBQ......
“Hey Kiera, where’s Lia?” asked Chris.
“She’s at home ‘lazing’ around she said. She insists
that I’m up
to something,” Kiera said.
“JC thinks the same thing about us, but we drug him
here
anyway. It’s too bad you couldn’t get Lia to come. I
think they would
be perfect for each other.”
“I know. She said she’s interested in someone else,
though.
She can be stubborn when she wants to be.” They
turned their
attention back to the group.
“Let’s get this party started!!!” Joey said. He
fired up the
barbecue and turned on some music.

Back at Tallia’s
“Hey Josh, this is just Tally. I thought I would
give you a call
and see what you were up to. You can call me if you
want. Talk to
you later.” She hated answering machines, she always
left stupid
messages.
She laid down on the couch and flipped on the
television. She
was in luck, “Dead Poet’s Society” was just starting.
She had the best
intentions of watching the movie, but fell asleep
about 45 minutes into
it. She woke to the ring of the phone.
“‘lo?”
“Tally? Did I wake you?”
“That’s ok, I shouldn’t have been sleeping anyway.
What’s up
Josh?”
“Not much. I just got home. Some friends drug me to
a party.
What have you been doing?”
“Absolutely nothing!! I haven’t done anything all
day! I’m
quite proud to say! I made today my official day to
do nothing!”
“I need to have one of those days.” Tallia and Josh
continued
talking. They were interrupted by a knock at Tallia’s
door.
“I have to answer the door, Josh, hold on a second,”
Tallia said
and set down the phone. She got up from the couch and
went over to
the door. She opened the door and her face lost all
color.
“Mike, what do want?” Tallia asked.
“Tal, let’s go inside, we need to talk,” he said.
“No! Say what you have to say and then leave!”
Tallia said.
“I think we should talk inside,” Mike said,
menacingly.
“Why, so you can bully me?”
“Come on Tal,” he said, in a sugary voice. Tallia
had never
noticed how he could change so fast before. Now she
did, and it made
her nervous. He pushed her inside and stepped in and
shut the door.
Even though Tallia was 5’8”, he still towered over her
by a good six
inches and outweighed her.
“Get out!”
“Are you seeing someone else?”
“It’s none of your business who I see!” slap
Tallia had
forgotten Josh was still on the phone and he heard
everything. When
he heard Mike slap her, he ran over to his cell phone
and dialed 911.
“911 Emergency. What’s your emergency?”
“I’m on the phone with my friend and her ex-boyfriend
is over
at her place, and it sounds like he’s hitting her!”
“What’s the address?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know the address?”
“It’s a long story. I have the phone number, will
that work?”
“Yes sir.”
“It’s 555- 2308.”
“Thank you,” Josh could hear her punching something
into the
computer. After a few minutes, he heard her sending
out a police car
to the address. Josh picked up the other phone and
heard Tallia
begging for Mike to stop and telling him that she
wasn’t seeing anyone
else.
“I’ve sent a car over to the residence sir,” the
operator said.
“Thanks!” Josh felt helpless, there was nothing he
could do. He
didn’t even know where she lived. All he could do was
listen to what
was happening on the other end of the line until the
police showed up.

Tallia curled up into a ball, trying to protect
herself from Mike’s
onslaught. She heard someone pounding on her door.
“This is the police! Open up!”
“Help me!” Tallia tried to yell. Mike kicked her
in the side. She
heard the door to her apartment shatter, then
mercifully, she blacked
out.

Chapter 5
Half hour later...
“Oh my god! What happened?” asked Kiera, as she
walked into
Tallia’s apartment. She watched Mike being hauled out
in handcuffs
and felt her stomach drop. “What did you do to her,
you asshole?” she
yelled at Mike. One of the officers pulled her away
from him.
“Do you live here, miss?”
“No, my friend Tallia lives here. Where is she?”
“Your friend is being taken to St. Murray’s
Hospital. She was
unconscious when we got here,” stated the police
officer.
“Oh, no,” Kiera moaned. “I can’t believe he did
this to her! Who
called the police?”
“I’m afraid I don’t know that. We were dispatched
here by a 911
operator.”
“Oh,” Kiera said, sounding distracted. “I have to
go, I have to get to
the hospital,” she said. Kiera made it out to her car
and to the hospital
before she broke down. Tallia didn’t deserve this!
she thought to
herself. She hated Mike.
She went to the admitting desk, and they directed
her to the
emergency room waiting room. When she got there, she
called
Davette, Suzi and Kristina. They were all on their
way to the hospital.
Then she dialed Justin’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hey Justin,” she said, in a shaky voice.
“Hey Kiera, I was just thinking about you!”
“Really?”
“You sound funny. Is something wrong?” Justin
said, sounding
concerned.
“Lia’s in the hospital,” she said.
“What? What happened?”
“Her ex-boyfriend, that’s what! I hate him!”
“What did he do?”
“I don’t know all of the details, but I think he
beat her up. I was just
walking into her apartment when they were taking him
out in
handcuffs. One of the police officers told me that
she was being taken
to the hospital, so that’s where I’m at now. I
thought I would let you
know, so you don’t think I stood you up for our date.”
“I’m sorry, Kiera,” he said. “I hate guys like
that! They give us
good ones a bad name. Do you want me to come down
there?”
“No, Suzi, Davette and Kristina are on their way
over now. I’ll call
you when I find out more.”
“Ok. If you need me, just call,” he said.
“Thanks Justin. I’ll talk to you later,” she
said, and hung up the
phone. She was so lucky to have found Justin. He was
so
understanding and charming and besides all that, he
was gorgeous.

Chapter 6
Two days later....
“Are you ready to go, Lia?” asked Kiera. Kiera was
taking Tallia
home from the hospital. She looked over at Tallia and
shuddered.
Even though she had improved over the last two days,
she still had a
black eye and a huge bruise from her ear to her chin.
She also had
three broken ribs.
“Yeah, let’s go,” she said. Tallia was staying
with Kiera, until she
was back on her feet and she could find a new
apartment. She wasn’t
looking forward to having Kiera pressure her to stay
and live with her.
They made the short ride to Kiera’s house in silence.
When they got
there, Tallia got out of the car and grimaced. She
was still really sore
and her ribs ached.
Kiera went ahead of her and unlocked the door.
When Tallia
entered the living room, she saw that it was filled
with flowers and
balloons.
“Looks like a flower shop, huh?” Kiera asked.
“Yeah. Who are they all from?”
“Well, Justin, Lance, Chris, Joey and their friend
JC sent some
flowers and balloons and that huge bear. Your
coworkers sent some.
These are from your sister. When people asked me
where they should
send them, I just told them here. I figured that
would be easiest. I
hope that’s okay.”
“Oh, my,” Tallia said. She was touched. “Has
anyone been to my
apartment?”
“Um, well yeah,” Kiera said.
“Spill it, Kiera,” Tallia said. “What are you
hiding?”
“We packed your stuff and it’s sitting in my
garage.”
“Kiera. I wish you wouldn’t have done that.”
“Well, we figured that since you were going to
move anyway, we
would help you out. Don’t be mad.”
“I’m not mad. I just wish I could have been
there,” Tallia said,
looking out the window.
Kiera watched her friend and debated telling her
that there had been
over 10 messages from Josh. She didn’t want to see
her friend hurt
again.
“Can I have the phone,” asked Tallia.
“Sure. Who are you gonna call?”
“Josh,” Tallia said. She dialed Josh’s number.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Josh,” Tallia said, quietly.
“Tallia? How are you? Are you okay? Where are
you? I’ve tried
calling you!” Josh said, in a rush.
“Slow down,” she laughed. “I’m at a friend’s
house. I’m out of the
hospital now, and I’m doing okay.”
“Hospital? You were in the hospital? What did
that jerk do to
you?”
“How did you know about Mike?”
“I was still on the phone and heard everything
that happened. I
called 911.”
“You called?”
“Yeah. I couldn’t sit there and listen to what he
was doing to you
and not do anything. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I have three broken ribs,” she heard Josh’s
sharp intake of
breath, “a few bruises and I’m a little sore.”
“Oh, Tally, I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault, Josh. I’m just glad I was
talking to you and you
called the cops! I don’t know how to thank you!”
“You don’t have to thank me. I’m just glad you’re
okay!” Tallia
and Josh talked for a little while longer, and Tallia
gave Josh the
number where she could be reached and hung up. Just
as she hung up
the phone, Kiera came into the room.
“So, how was your phone call?”
“Kiera, he saved me! He’s the one who called
911,” Tallia still
couldn’t believe it. A guy who she barely knew, had
saved her. She
didn’t know what to think. She was scared that she
was falling for a
guy she had never met. She didn’t know what to do.
She knew her
friends would think she was crazy for falling for a
guy she had never
met. Especially after what had just happened. “I
think I’m gonna go
and take a nap.”

Chapter 7
Justin’s place....
The members of *N Sync had gathered at Justin’s
house to discuss
there upcoming tour. It wasn’t for two months, but a
lot of preparation
had to go into planning the shows.
Lance noticed that JC sat off to the side of the
group. He
seemed to be lost in thought. He walked over to JC.
“Hey JC. What’s up?”
“Huh? Oh, I’m just thinking.”
“About a girl?”
“Kind of.”
“Do you want to talk about her?”
“It’s kind of hard to explain. You’re going to
think I’m nuts if I tell
you about it,” JC said.
“Try me.”
“Ok. About a month ago, I was trying to call
Marlene. Apparently I
dialed the wrong number and the girl who I called,
called me back to
tell me that I had called the wrong number. Well,
before she had a
chance to tell me why she had called, I yelled at her
and then hung up
on her. She called back and yelled at me that she was
just trying to be
nice and that she didn’t even know who I was, then she
hung up on me.
Basically, I felt like a jerk, so I called to
apologize and we started
talking. She’s really nice. I’ve talked to her three
times since then, and
I think I really like her. Does that sound crazy?”
Lance considered what his friend had just told
him, then said, “Not
really, JC. I think it’s better this way. If she
likes you, she likes you
for who you are, not that you’re a member of *N Sync.
If you like her,
it’s because of something you see inside of her.”
“Thanks Lance. I’m glad I talked to you.” JC
stood up and joined
the rest of the group in the discussion of their
upcoming tour.

Chapter 8
A week later......

Tallia was feeling a lot better. She had even
found a new place to
live. It was a small one bedroom apartment, and she
had no trouble
affording it. She had a hard time convincing Kiera
that she was well
enough to move into her new place. Kiera had tried to
talk her into
staying with her permanently, but Tallia would have
none of that. She
finally wore Kiera down. Tomorrow was the day she
would move into
her own place again. She couldn’t wait!
“Lia, the girls and I decided to throw you a
‘Housewarming/Glad
your better’ party, tonight,” Kiera said, as she came
into the room.
“Kiera, you didn’t have to do that! You guys have
done enough!”
“Justin and the guys are coming over, too.”
“Oh, Kiera, please tell me your not still trying
to set me up with their
friend!” Tallia pleaded.
“Me? Of course not! I would never!” Kiera said,
with an angelic
look on her face. Tallia knew better.
“No matchmaking! I’m not interested! By the way,
your halo is
slipping!” Tallia said as she walked out of the room,
laughing.

Later that night.....
Justin, Lance, Chris and Joey showed up at Kiera’s
around 7:00
o’clock. Davette, Suzi and Kristina were already
there, visiting with
Tallia and Kiera. Kiera got up off the couch when
Justin walked into
the room and greeted him with a kiss. He took her
hand and sat on the
couch with her. Joey sat on the love seat by Suzi and
put his arm
around her.
Davette noticed Lance motioning to her. She got
up and followed
him into the kitchen. Once they were in the kitchen,
Lance pulled her
close and kissed her.
“How’s Lia doing?”
“Good. I don’t think she can wait to move,
though. Where’s your
friend JC?”
“He couldn’t come. He thinks we’re trying to set
him up with Lia.”
“Smart guy. Lia thinks the same thing about us,
that we’re trying to
set her up with JC. She’s not interested.”
“Neither is JC. He told me about a girl he had met
recently that he
was interested in. I’m not pushing him about Lia, but
the other guys
are. They don’t know about the other girl he’s
interested in.”
“I don’t think it would work anyway. Neither of
them are jumping to
meet other.”
“Yeah, I agree. Let’s go back into the living room
before the others
miss us.” They walked back into the living room, hand
in hand. The
group sat around talking until close to midnight.
Tallia stood up and stretched, “I think I’m going
to go to bed. I have
a long day ahead of me, tomorrow.” She said goodnight
and went to
her temporary room. She wanted to talk to Josh, but
it was late. She
decided she would call him tomorrow.

Chapter 8
The next day....
“Thank you, guys! I don’t know what I would have
done without
your help!” Tallia said. Her friends had helped move
her into her new
apartment. Even Lance, Justin, Joey and Chris had
helped. Tallia was
so grateful, because she knew that without their help,
she would have
had to wait longer to move in.
“No problem, Lia. We were glad to help,” Justin
said. “We’re just
sorry JC couldn’t be here to help.” Tallia just
looked at him and shook
her head.
“You guys should leave the poor guy alone. Neither
of us is rushing
to meet the other one. Besides, I’m interested in
someone else.”
“But....
“No buts, I’m happy as I am,” Tallia said, with a
smile.
“Alright,” Justin said. “I’m gonna go change, so I
can hit the pool!”
Tallia’s new apartment had a pool and security access.
That was one of
the main reasons she had chosen this place. It made
her feel more
secure. Tallia went into her room and changed into a
one piece suit.
She couldn’t swim because of her ribs, but she thought
she would catch
some rays. She grabbed her cordless phone and headed
for the pool.
When she got out to the pool, the others were already
in. It was a
warm day, but they were the only ones in the pool.
She settled into one
of the lounge chairs and watched her friends. Before
long, she had
dozed off.

“Hey Kristina! Come here for a minute,” Chris
said. Kristina swam over to Chris.
“What’s up?” she asked. Before she could respond,
Chris dunked her. She came up sputtering. “Oh, you asked for it
now!” she shouted, at his retreating back. When she caught him, he
turned to her and raised his hands.
“I surrender! Do with me what you will!”
“Interesting offer,” Kristina purred. She pulled
Chris close and kissed him. When she pulled back, she grabbed his
head and pushed it under.
“I deserved that!” Chris laughed, when he
surfaced. Then he got serious. “Kristina, what do you think will happen to
Lia’s ex?”
“I don’t know. I hope he gets locked up for a
while. I heard that this isn’t the first time he was arrested for assault,
so hopefully they’ll
be tough on him.”
“Is he still in jail right now?”
“No, he’s out until his trial. I heard that he
was looking for Lia. He
blames her for his being arrested.”
“When’s the trial?”
“Not for three weeks. Lia’s nervous, she has to
testify against him.”
“I don’t blame her. She’s been through a lot.”
Kristina agreed with him. They talked for a little while longer, then they
joined the rest of
the group.

Tallia was awakened by the ringing of the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey Tal, how are you?” Tallia felt herself go
cold.
“How did you find this number?”
“I have my ways, bitch. Just know that I’m
watching you. You’ll get what you deserve soon.” click Tallia was
shaking, as she sat the phone down. Kristina had just climbed out of the
pool and was headed towards her. She noticed how white Tallia was.
“Lia? What’s wrong? You’re completely white!”
“That was Mike. He found my phone number somehow.
He told me he was watching me and I was going to get what I
deserved. I’m scared! What if he knows where I live?”
“I’m sure one of us can stay here with you for a
little while. Plus, you live in a secure building.”
“What if someone else lets him in?”
“We’ll put an extra lock on the door. First, I
think you should call the phone company and have your number changed again.”
Tallia had calmed down a little. She picked up the phone to call
the phone company. Kristina went over to the edge of the pool
and told the rest of the group what had happened. Suzi offered to stay
with Tallia for the time being. They were all upset that Mike had
managed to get Tallia’s new number. Kiera got out of the pool and
went and sat beside Tallia.
“Lia, I think you should call the cops and get a
restraining order for Mike. That way if he comes anywhere near you, they
might go harder on him during the trial,” Kiera said. Tallia agreed
to call the cops tomorrow. She couldn’t go back to work, for at least
a few more weeks, and she would have to find a new job anyway.
Mike knew where she worked, and she wasn’t taking any chances.
