They finally arrived at the hotel at 11:45. Eppie began to get nervous.
"Maybe this isn't such a great idea. Maybe we should just go home. I mean...
what if I'm NOT the girl he was talking about?"
"Well, how many chicks from Colorado can a guy pick up in Florida, anyway,
Ep? Don't be ridiculous!"
Eppie made herself breathe deeply. I'M SURE GLAD I HAD TO HELP AUNT PENNY
WITH HER LAMAZ TRAINING -- she laughed to herself.
"So..." Kim began "...on to plan A?"
"KIM WAIT!" Eppie yelled.
"What? What is it?"
"Our parents! Do you realize that they probablly have NO idea where we are?"
Eppie grabbed the cell phone and dialed her home number.
Her mother answered.
"Mom?"
"Oh, hi sweetie. Where are you calling from dear?" Her mother asked.
"Actually, mom.... Kim and I took a little detour from Walmart... and we
sort of ended up at 'N Sync's hotel."
"Have you seen Justin?" Her mom asked hopefully. She wanted Justin and Eppie
to work things out almost as much as Eppie did.
"No. Not yet. We're gonna try though...."
"Oh good! Justin is such a sweet boy!" Eppie's mother replied. "What time do
you think you'll be home?"
"I don't know... It's about midnight right now and it takes an hour to get
home... so...."
"Please, try not to be home any later than two. Alright? If it's any later,
call your father or me and we can come get you. The city is no place for you
girls. Even if you did just graduate high school. Or maybe one of those 'N
Sync boys will will help you get home..."
Eppie laughed at her mother. "Okay, mom..... Could we maybe have 'til 2:30?
It might take us a while to figure out how we're going to get to their
room." Eppie asked, trying to sound extremely mature and responsible.
Her mother agreed. "No later than 2:30, you hear?" she paused. "And good
luck honey."
"Thanks.... Hey mom. Could you call Kim's parents and fill them in for us?"
"I think I can manage that... Don't do anything crazy okay?" Her mom joked.
"I'll try, mother. We'll see you in a few. I love you. Bye."
Eppie hung up the phone and slowly stepped out of the car. HERE'S HOPIN'.
"NOW time for plan A." Kim laughed.
The two girls walked up to the hotel entrance and saw a HUGE mob of teenage
girls standing there with signs and screaming like it was the end of the
world.
"We are NEVER gonna get through that." Eppie's eyes grew wide as she stared
at the crowd.
"You're right." Kim started. "WE'RE not gonna get through that. YOU are."
She pushed Eppie closer to the crowd.
"Quit pushing me!" Eppie complained. She regained her composure and walked
up to a girl in the back of the crowd. The girl held a sign that read: I
love Chris!
Eppie tapped her on the shoulder. "Hi. I noticed that you're an 'N Sync fan.
That's great! So am I!"
The girl glanced at Eppie, then continued to scream at the top of her lungs.
"You see, I REALLY need to get up to the front because... I just REALLY
REALLY need to talk to that body guard standing there." Eppie pointed at
him.
"Yeah RIGHT!" The girl yelled snottily. "You actually expect me to let you
through? You know, you're just going to have to wait back here like the rest
of us. PLEASE! Some people are SO impatient."
"You don't understand. I'm that girl that Justin was talking about on the
radio...."
"Nice try." The girl replied.
Eppie mumbled under her breath, "See if I get you an autograph."
She walked back over to Kim. "I can't get through!"
"You can do it!" Kim joked, doing her best impression of the guy in the
Waterboy.
Kim walked over and stood behind another group of girls. "AAAAHHHHH! I SEE
JUSTIN!" She yelled and pointed to the left side of the parking lot.
The girls screamed and began to run in that direction until they realized
they had been tricked.
Eppie managed to push her way through the crowd. "Excuse me! Pardon! Coming
through! Sorry about that." She yelled as she made her way through.
Finally, she was face to face with a big, muscular man dressed in black.
"Hi." She began.
He gave her a nod as he overlooked the mob.
"I was.... sort of hoping that you might let me get in..." she spoke in the
sweetest voice possible. She thought about complimenting him on his outfit
but decided that she'd better not. I DON'T WANT TO LOOK TOO OBVIOUS!
He spoke in a deep voice. "I'm sorry. No one is allowed in."
"I'm SURE I would be allowed in! I know Justin."
"Sure you do! If you really know Justin Timberlake, you wouldn't be down
here trying to get up there, now would you?"
HE'S GOT A POINT.
"But, I don't think you understand... You see... I'm in love with Justin
Timberlake."
He rolled his eyes and pointed to all of the girls. "Get in line, missy.
What makes you any different than these girls?"
Eppie tried to sound as innocent and serious as possible. "The thing is... I
think... well, I HOPE he's in love with me too."
He began laughing.
"Why does everybody laugh when I tell them that???" She began to whine.
"Again... every other girl here feels the same way as you. There is NO way
you're getting past me. Don't waste your time."
Eppie was very aggrivated. She yelled as she pushed her way to the back of
the crowd. "Pardon me! Comin' through! Watch out! 'Scuse me!"
She walked over to a group of girls and yelled, "LOOK IT'S JC!!!" This time
she pointed to the right side of the lot.
"THAT was just for fun." Eppie whispered to Kim. They began to walk away
from the screaming crowd.
"I guess that means it's time for plan B." Kim surveyed the parking lot. She
saw a middle-aged couple with two little girls walking toward the hotel
entrance. Kim and Eppie ran up to them. Kim tried to sound as sweet as
possible. "Hi. My friend and I really need some help. You see.... she knows
a member of the group, 'N Sync, that's staying here... but we can't get in
because of security and stuff. So we were wondering if you'd let us
just....maybe... walk in with you and pretend that we're staying here with
you?...."
"Do you really think we're that stupid???" The man replied. "Never on earth
have I heard something SO RIDICULOUS! To take two complete strangers into my
hotel room just so they can meet some rock group! Are you CRAZY?"
Eppie yelled back at the man. "WELL, aparentlly! That's what everyone keeps
telling me!" Eppie's hope was fading fast. "Kim..."
Kim interrupted. "We'll ask a few more people. There's gotta be some 'good
samaritan' here that'll help us out." They began asking everyone in the
parking lot if they could sneak in with them. Of course, the answer was
always the same---NO WAY!
Eppie and Kim both knew that it wasn't the best idea, but they had run out
of options and this was all they could come up with.
Finally, after asking about ten other people, Eppie gave up. "Let's just go
home. Maybe it's just not meant to be..."
As Eppie was talking, a guy in his early twenties stomped past them. He was
tall and athletic looking with light brown hair. He wore a pair of khaki
cargos and red button-down shirt. Kim watched him as he walked by. "Let me
just ask one more person.... If he says no, then we'll go home."
Eppie was hesitant. "He looks kind of angry..."
Before Eppie could finish her sentence, Kim was already following the guy.
"HI!" Kim said cheerily, walking up to him. He ignored her. She ran up and
stopped right in front of him.
"What do you want?" He asked angrily.
"I have a teency, weency little favor to ask you... You see my friend over
there? Well, she is in love with Justin Timberlake.... from 'N Sync.... and
he's staying at this hotel but she can't get up to his room because there's
all of this security everywhere.... and he's in love with her, too.... Have
you been listening to the radio?"
He nodded his head and folded his arms. He began to yell. "Look, I don't
know what kind of prank you're trying to pull here, but I am NOT in the best
mood right now. I came up to Colorado with my girlfriend and two of her
friends and they all just ditched me at the club we went to for some
motorcycle jerks! I'm not in the mood for games!!!"
Eppie stood next to Kim's car and watched. She could tell that it wasn't
going well. She ran over to them. "Hi... I'm Eppie. Her friend." She pointed
to Kim. "Look, we are in desperate need of help here and you're probablly
the only person left to ask! There's this guy in the hotel that I would
REALLY like to get upstairs and talk to because...I love him..."
"Of course you do, he's in 'N SYNC." The guy commented.
"It's not like that, though. I honestly KNOW him and I think that he loves
me too. My only problem is that big guy up there blocking that mob of girls.
He wouldn't let us in and we figured if we went in to the hotel with
someone, pretending to be staying with them... well, then we'd have a better
chance at getting in....."
Kim pulled Eppie aside. She whispered, "Eppie, I don't think you should lay
on all that mushy love stuff right now... that guy just told me how he just
got his heart broken and...."
"I'll do it." He smiled. "I really am a sucker for that 'mushy love stuff'."
He looked at Kim. "Besides, I wanna see ONE good thing come out of this
night."
They began to walk toward the hotel. "You could hear me? Now, don't I feel
like an idiot?!" Kim laughed. "By the way... what's your name?"
"My name's Grahmm. And you are Eppie and....?"
"I'm Kim."
Grahmm's spirit was already lifting.
"Wait a minute!" Eppie yelled. "The guard has seen me. What if he won't let
us in???"
They stood outside thinking.
All of a sudden Kim ran to her car. Eppie and Grahmm looked at each other a
little bit confused.
Kim ran back with a blanket. "We used this at the concert. We can wrap it
around you and just say that you're really sick...."
And that's just what they did. Grahmm and Kim pretended to help Eppie walk.
A lobby assistant walked up to them and asked, "Is everything alright?"
"Oh... sure..." Kim replied. "Our friend here's just feeling a little sick.
That's all. We'll just be getting her up to our room real quick."
They got into the elevator and went to the second floor. Grahmm unlocked the
door to his room and they all piled in.
"PHEW! I can't believe we MADE IT!" Kim said, laughing for no reason. Grahmm
began to laugh too.
Eppie just smiled at them. She was in disbelief. "What floor is 'N Sync on?"
"I heard someone say that they were on the fourth..." Grahmm replied.
Eppie began to feel butterflies in her stomache. Justin was only two floors
away but it still felt sooo much farther.
"NOW what?" Grahmm asked. He glanced at Eppie, then at Kim. Both had
clueless expressions on their faces.
Kim jumped up. "I will be RIGHT back!" She ran out of the room.
Eppie laughed. Kim ALWAYS had a plan. Eppie and Grahmm sat in the hotel room
speechless, waiting for Kim to arrive. Eppie was extremely scared now. WHAT
IF HE DOESN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE ME? WHAT IF I LOOK DIFFERENT THAN I DID BEFORE
AND HE TOTALLY SHUNS ME?
***************************************
Justin just laid on his bed and closed his eyes. Trying not to think at all.
Chris stood next to the door and glanced at his friend. "I'm gonna go over
to Lance and Joey's room... JC's in there with them and we're gonna all play
cards..... You wanna come?"
Justin's voice cracked from fighting the tears. "No."
"Okay..... Are you gonna be alright?"
Justin waved his arm at Chris to tell him to go ahead.
SHE DEFINITELY HATES ME -- Justin thought. He had hoped that somehow Eppie
would find him and tell him that she loved him and that everything was going
to be okay. IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
**************************************
Eppie and Grahmm were getting impatient as they waited for Kim. She had been
gone a half an hour.
Finally, Kim ran into the room and slammed the door behind her. "This is
sooo gonna work." She stated proudly.
She pulled out a hotel uniform from out of her shirt. "You should have seen
it. People were giving me the nastiest looks. They thought I was pregnant!"
She laughed. "Alright, so here's the plan... Grahmm dresses up in this. We
get one of those room service cart dealies and we put Eppie on the bottom
rack thing. You guys get it so far?"
"I THINK so." They laughed at Kim's instructions.
"....Then, you guys just get on the elevator and say that you've got some
food for Justin..... Peice of CAKE! Am I good or what?"
Eppie was unsure. "Do you think it's going to work?"
Kim nodded, then shrugged. "It's worth a try anyway."
So, while Grahmm was changing into the uniform, Kim and Eppie went into the
hallway to try to find a "misplaced" cart.
A busboy walked by pushing one.
"Now's our chance." Kim whispered to Eppie.
Kim walked over to him and began flirting to distract him. She told him that
the key to her room, at the end of the hallway wasn't working right. As they
walked to the other end, Eppie grabbed the cart and ran it back into
Grahmm's hotel room.
As soon as Eppie slammed the door, Kim yelled, "OH MY GOODNESS! Some girl
just stole your cart and went down to the first floor with it!" Frantically,
he ran to the elevator and went down, waving goodbye to Kim first.
Kim snickered. She ran into the room.
"Well, Eppie... you're carriage awaits you." Kim lifted up the white table
cloth and Eppie crawled under.
"This is really NOT comfortable." Eppie complained.
"With love comes pain. You want to get to the fourth floor, don't you?"
Grahmm began to push the cart out the door.
"Hey, Grahmm. Thanks for doing this, man, it's really cool of you." Kim
smiled at him.
He smiled. "No problem."
WELL, THERE MIGHT BE A LITTLE ROMANCE BLOOMIN' THERE-- Eppie thought.
Grahmm made it with the cart into the elevator. "Going to level four,
please." He told the elevator operator in his most professional voice.
"Wow! That's the 'N SYNC floor!" the operator replied. "You'll get some NICE
tips there."
Grahmm smiled. I CAN'T BLOW OUR COVER. I CAN'T BLOW OUR COVER-- he repeated
to himself.
They had reached level three. "Oh, look at that, one more floor to go."
Grahmm signaled to Eppie.
The operator looked at him strangely. "Very good! You can count!"
Finally, they reached the fourth floor.
"And can you tell me what floor we're on NOW?" The operator asked in a
condescending tone.
"Oh, great! We're on the fourth floor." Grahmm signaled again to Eppie.
He wanted to give the elevator operator a peice of his mind, but he knew
that could ruin everything.
Finally, he took a step. It was the step that made them officially on "the
'N Sync floor".
"Here goes nothing." He whispered to Eppie as he walked up to a group of
security guards standing in the hallway.
"Hello, fellas." He said, trying to be as calm and unobvious as possible.
"Where do you think you're going?" A guard asked him.
"Well, I have this food for a Mr. Justin....ah.... Justin.... This food was
ordered by Justin." He tried to cover a mistake.
While Grahmm was being interrogated by the guards, JC walked by.
Grahmm had no idea what Justin looked like, so when he saw JC, he walking
towards Justin's hotel room, he guessed that it might be Justin.
"It's Justin!" He yelled, signalling Eppie to run for it.
Eppie panicked. She leaped out from under the cart and tried to run to....
WHO IS THAT? -- she thought-- THAT'S NOT JUSTIN.
The guards caught her and Grahmm. She put up quite a fight. "Please just let
me go, I really need to see Justin! JUSTIN!!! JUSTIN!!!" She began to yell,
hoping that he would hear her.
JC stopped. THAT VOICE SOUNDS SO FAMILIAR. He looked over at the the
screaming girl. AND THAT GIRL LOOKS SO FAMILIAR.... WHERE HAVE I SEEN HER
BEFORE? Then he remembered the picture that Justin took with him everywhere.
"Eppie?" He asked in shock.
"YES I'M EPPIE!... Do I KNOW you?"
"It's JC! We talked that one time. I'm Justin's friend!" He ran over to her
and the guards in excitement.
"You know this wacko?" A guard asked.
"Yes! I do! I really do!" JC's smile was huge.
The guards let Eppie go but still held on to Grahmm.
"He's with me." Eppie said boldly.
"We don't care." Another guard replied.
"Let him go." JC said politely.
The guards loosened their grip and finally let Grahmm go. "Well, you don't
need me anymore. I'm just gonna go back to my room now." Grahmm ran back to
the elevator and then disappeared.
JC gave Eppie a huge bear hug. "I don't know you really... but you've just
made me soooo happy. Justin is going to FLIP! I can't believe it! How did
you get up here?"
Eppie replied, "It's a LONG story."
Of course, JC wanted to hear it anyway, so she tried to talk as quickly as
possible.
"That's amazing. You had to do all that just to get up here???"
Eppie nodded and sighed a sigh of relief. But it wasn't over. The scariest
part was still to come--- seeing Justin.
"So, now what?" JC asked.
"I don't know... I guess I'll just go in there...."
"I've got a better idea...." JC replied.
----------------------------------------
There was a knock on Justin's hotel room door.
"It's open!" Justin yelled. He was still lying in the same spot on the bed,
his eyes closed, and his back facing the door.
JC walked in. "It's me. Thought you might want some food..." He rolled the
cart into the room.
"I'm not hungry." Justin mummbled.
"Well, I'll just leave this here anyway. You never know. Maybe you'll change
your mind." JC left the room and closed the door. Justin still just laid
their.
Ever so quietly, Eppie crawled out from under the cart and stood up. Fixing
her clothes and her hair, she bit her lip. GREAT! WHAT DO I DO NOW?
"So..." she began. "I hear you've been talkin' about me..."
Justin froze. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.
Eppie began to get worried. HE'S NOT MOVING. HE'S NOT SAYING ANYTHING. MAYBE
THIS WASN'T SUCH A GOOD IDEA. She took a deep breath. Justin jumped up from
the bed. "EPPIE!" He yelled in excitement. Tears filled both of their eyes.
Justin walked towards her.
"I thought you migt not remember me..." Eppie began.
"Of course I do, Ep..... But.... I thought you would hate me..."
"I don't hate you, Justin...."
They both spoke at the exact same time, "I love you."
They laughed.
"I'm so sorry." Justin came closer.
"Don't be." Eppie replied.
Justin leaned in and kissed her.
--------------------------------------
JC stood outside Justin's room like a body guard. Chris walked up to him.
"Move, JC, I gotta get in there."
"Oh no you don't." JC said, pushing Chris aside.
"WHAT!? Why not?"
"Because," JC stated calmly, "they need their privacy."
Chris was confused. "They?"
JC gave him a look.
"You mean... Eppie???"
JC nodded at Chris.
"Oh! It's a perfect ending." Chris smiled.
JC replied. "No... It's a perfect beginning."
