Chapter 8
After about an hour had passed Lynn realized they needed to get back to Rae's apartment before Kathryn arrived. They pulled up to see she had already arrived. There was a rental car parked in the front and Kathryn sat on the steps. When she saw the cars pull up she stood up and made her way to Rae's car quickly.
"Baby!" she exclaimed grabbing Rae as she stepped out of her car.
"Mommy," Rae said hugging her mother back with great force.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine mom."
"How come you didn't call me?" Kathryn said letting go of Rae.
"Mom, I know how you worry. I didn't want to do that to you."
"Baby, this is very serious though. You don't hide this from me no matter what you think."
"You're right, I'm sorry."
"I called Dr. Taylor before I left Memphis and he told me he would call us tonight with the results."
"I know, he already told me that."
"Okay."
"Hey Miss Sammons," Justin said giving Kathryn a hug.
"Hello, Justin."
"Kath," Lynn said eyeing Kathryn and walking over to her with her arms opened.
"Girl, I missed you so much," Kathryn said embracing Lynn.
"I know."
"It's been too long."
"Yes it has."
"Hey mom, how long have you been waiting out here?"
"Oh not too long. About ten minutes. Where were you guys?"
"We went to Bruster's and your rude daughter put ice cream in my hair," Justin answered.
"You probably deserved it, spaghetti head," Kathryn commented rubbing his curls.
Rae and Lynn laughed seeing the face Justin made at her action.
"Well, lets get inside, it is hot out here," Kathryn said grabbing her bags.
"Justin help her with her bags," Lynn said walking ahead of him.
After sticking out his tongue he turned around and got Kathryn's bags.
"Mom, excuse the mess, I wasn't expecting company."
"I can tell. Where's Christina?"
"I don't know. When I left she was asleep."
"She went over to J.C.'s," Justin said dropping Kathryn's bags and taking a seat on the couch.
"Oh, cute," Rae said.
"Is this her new boyfriend?" Kathryn asked trying to catch up.
"Nope, just friends," Justin answered.
"And you, where's your girlfriend?" Kathryn asked.
"I don't have one."
"Oh I thought you did."
"Nope, still single."
"You better tell me right now if your dating my daughter."
"Eww, no," Justin said with a face of disgust.
Rae turned and shot a death look at Justin.
"I'm just kidding. But, no mam, I'm not dating your daughter. I only wish," Justin said winking at Rae.
"Yeah, actually mom, he just hasn't gotten any in a while."
"Shut up," Justin said.
"You guys leave my son alone," Lynn said sitting down next to Justin and wrapping her arm around him.
Rae and Kathryn laughed. They talked and got caught up for hours. Christina finally arrived home accompanied by J.C. and Chris.
"Hey everybody, I didn't know there was a party tonight," Chris said walking in the room.
"Looks like you haven't changed a bit," Kathryn stood up giving him a hug.
"Miss Sammons!" J.C. shouted walking in the room.
"Hello Josh," she said also giving him a hug.
She then turned to Christina and gave her a hug as well.
"Hello Mrs. Harless," Chris said sitting down.
"Hello Chris."
"Mrs. Harless!" J.C. exclaimed.
"Okay dude, stop shouting peoples names," Chris said to J.C.
"Sorry, I'm just excited to see my two favorite women."
"Sit down," Justin said to J.C.
"Hello Christina," Lynn said waving.
"Hi Mrs. Harless."
"So what's going on?" Chris questioned smilingly.
"Oh we're just chatting," answered Lynn.
"What brings you to town Mrs. Sammons?" asked J.C.
"Well, my daughter neglected to tell me she might be having surgery so I got a call from Lynn earlier this morning and decided I needed to come see my baby girl."
"Oh, cool."
Chapter 9
After hours of hanging out and eating some dinner the phone rang.
"I got it," yelled Rae as she ran into the other room.
"I'm gonna go see if it's Dr. Taylor," Kathryn said getting up and following Rae.
"Hello," Rae said answering the phone.
"Rae?"
"Yes, this is her."
"Hello, it's Dr. Taylor."
"Oh hey."
"I talked to your mom earlier and she told me she was coming down, is she there yet?"
"Yeah, she's here."
"Okay would you rather I talk to her?"
"Um, not really. Can you tell me first then talk to her?"
"Yes, that'll be fine."
There was a sudden pause.
"Okay, I was right about the tumor. It's a meta static tumor in your lower spine."
Rae's breath became faster and harder as the news made her very scared.
"We are going to have to do surgery as soon as possible and get that sucker out."
"Okay," Rae said with a slight shake in her voice.
"Like I said before Rae, your gonna be fine."
"I hope so."
"Okay, can I talk to your mom now?"
"Yeah, she's right here."
Rae handed her mom the phone with a sad look on her face.
"Dr. Taylor."
"Hello Kath."
"What is it?"
"It's a tumor in her lower spine, but she's gonna be fine."
"What is going to happen though."
"She's gonna need to come in for surgery tomorrow and we are hopefully gonna get it out."
"Hopefully?"
"Well, you know with tumors, you can never be positive."
"Dr. Taylor, I want my daughter to have the best care possible."
"She will. You know that I care for her very much."
"Okay, so what time tomorrow."
"Six a.m."
"Okay, we'll see you then."
"All righty."
"Bye."
"Bye."
Kathryn hung up the phone and saw the worry in Rae's face.
"Mom, am I gonna die?" Rae asked as tears formed in her eyes.
Kathryn walked up to Rae wrapping her arms around her.
"Not if I have anything to do with it."
The two sulked in each other's shoulders until realizing there were other people over.
"Your gonna be fine sweetie," Kathryn said wiping the tears from her daughter's eyes.
"That's what everyone's telling me. I hope you guys know what you're talking about."
"We do."
They walked into the living room and shared the news with everyone. They all comforted Rae and told her she was going to be fine. Everyone had faith in her and that she was gonna pull through. Everyone but her herself. She couldn't help but to think that her time had come. That she was going to die.
Chapter 10
The next day Rae went to the hospital with all of her friends and family there to support her. Everyone waited in anticipation in the waiting room. Justin sat in a chair with his head in his hands praying that his friend would be okay. Kathryn paced back and forth also praying for her daughter's health. After two hours of surgery, a nurse came down and only allowed Kathryn to go up and see Rae and talk with Dr. Taylor.
"Kath, it went great. We got all of the tumor out."
"All that you saw right."
"Yes, but hopefully that's all that was there. We're of course going to make sure there's no more anywhere else."
"Is she okay?"
"She looks very pale and her face is puffy, but that's just the drugs. She'll look better after a few weeks of good rest."
"Can I see her?"
"Of course, right this way."
He led her to where Rae was staying.
"I'll let you have some time alone with her, but she is still asleep. She probably won't wake up for another hour or so."
"Okay."
Kathryn walked into the room to see Rae laying peacefully on the hospital bed.
"Oh my baby girl," Kathryn said picking up Rae's hand as tears rolled down her cheek.
"Why did this happen to you?" she asked as the tears came out faster and harder.
"I remember when I had my surgery and the look you gave me when you first saw me. You were so scared. Now I know what it feels like."
Moments later, Justin joined her in the room. Tears formed in his eyes when he saw the appearance of Rae.
"Justin, it's just the drugs she's on. She's gonna be fine," Kathryn said assuring Justin.
Justin didn't say a word. He just looked at her, staring at how beautiful she was. At this very moment he realized how much he loved her. How much he wanted to just put his arms around her and kiss her soft lips. He couldn't help but to think these things despite her condition. He always had feelings for Rae. All the joking around was a cover up so she didn't realize how much he really liked her. He felt like she only wanted to be his friend, since when they did try and hook up she broke it off.
"Justin are you okay?" Kathryn questioned.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. It's just a little weird seeing her like this."
"Tell me about it."
After a few hours Rae finally woke up. It was only Justin in the room when she had. He was sitting on the chair next to her reading a book waiting for her to open her eyes.
"Justin?"
"Rae, hey. How do you feel?" Justin asked standing up and leaning over Rae.
"A little weird. Where's my mom?" she asked rubbing her eyes.
"Oh her and eveyone else went to get something to eat. I decided to stay up here just in case you woke up."
"Oh, well that was sweet. Are you okay? Come here, let me feel your head."
"Be quiet."
"I'm just kidding. You have been really supportive Justin and I really appreciate that. Your always here for me. I don't know what I would do without you."
"I don't know why, I guess I like helping you out. Even though your mean to me."
"Whatever. You're the mean one."
"I'd argue with you, but your obviously drugged up and I know you don't know what you're talking about."
Rae laughed at Justin's humor. Minutes later everyone joined the two in her room and talked with Rae. She was doing fine and the doctor expected her to be home in a few days.
Chapter 11
After four days at the hospital, Rae was able to return home, though she had to play it safe. Nothing to much for the first few weeks. At the end of that week Justin and the guys had to go out for three weeks on tour. Kathryn finally returned home once Rae was feeling much better to get back to her job. The week before Justin came home, he called Rae and told her he wanted to have a little get together once they got back for her getting better. She agreed and got everything planned for there arrival. She got Katie to make sure there was enough liquor for a get together and invited some friends from school. It turned into a getting well and back to school party for Rae since she would start school in a few weeks. The guys got in around eight that Friday night. They went to each other's house to get situated and changed then met up at Rae's and Christina's apartment where the get together was to be held. The front driveway and road were filled with cars.
"Geez, I thought it was just a little get together," J.C. commented looking at the amount of cars.
"So did I," added Justin.
They walked inside to hear loud music and saw people walking around and dancing.
They made their way into the kitchen where Rae and Christina were hanging out with some friends.
"Justin!" Rae exclaimed jumping off of the counter embracing him with a hug.
"Hey baby," Justin said squeezing her tightly.
J.C. immediately walked over to Christina giving her a hug.
"Well Rae, looks like you recovered nicely," Chris commented.
"I did, thank you. How was touring?"
"Tiring," Lance said with his eyes half open.
"Lance it looks like you need a drink," Rae said passing him a cup filled with red liquid.
"What is it?" he questioned looking inside the cup.
"My special recipe. You'll like it I assure you. Drink!"
Lance gulped the drink and let out a refreshing ahh as he passed the cup to Rae.
"Fill me up," Lance insisted.
Everyone laughed at Lance's humor as Rae filled up his drink.
"Everyone help yourselves," Rae insisted as she passed Justin a cup.
"Nah, I don't really feel up to it."
"Oh come on. You need to have a little fun."
"Yeah but I already have a headache, you go ahead though."
"Oh I already went ahead. But suit yourself," she said passing the cup onto J.C.
"Thank you," J.C. said accepting and filling it up with some of Rae's special punch.
"You wanna dance?" Rae asked Justin grabbing his hand.
"Nah, I really don't feel good. I think I'm gonna go lie down in your room."
"You want some aspirin?"
"I already took some. I'm gonna go let it sink in."
"Okay," she said letting go of his hands.
He walked to the back and laid down on Rae's bed. He laid staring at the ceiling then around the room noticing her bulletin board of pictures. He saw the picture from when they went to Cancun for the summer and the one from Christmas the year before. In every picture they were smiling and hugging. 'Why aren't we together?' he thought to himself. 'It's not like she has a boyfriend or I have a girlfriend. We're both single and attracted to each other.' He continued to think about the situation and dozed off.
Chapter 12
Later, Rae peeked in to see Justin was sound asleep on her bed. Being a little buzzed by the drinking she walked in and yelled his name.
"Justin wake up!"
He slowly opened his eyes to see Rae standing there laughing.
"What are you doing?" he asked rubbing his face.
"I want you to wake up. I haven't seen you in three weeks and you come to my place and sleep."
"Sorry, I had a headache."
"Is it better?"
"Yeah."
"Good," she said walking over to the bed and lying down next to him.
"So," she said trying to spark conversation.
"Are you drunk?"
"Do I look drunk Justin?"
"A little."
"Then I'm a little drunk."
"Are you sure you're allowed to be drinking so soon after the surgery?"
"No, but I guess I'll find out."
Justin looked at Rae surprised at her answer.
"What? The doctor didn't say anything about not drinking and besides, I'm not drinking that much. I'm already finished for the night."
"Okay."
There was a moment of silence between the two. Rae turned her head to face Justin seeing his eyes fixed on the rotation of the fan.
"What's your problem?" Rae asked sitting up on the bed.
"Nothing, I'm just tired."
"Than go home and go to bed."
"Fine," he muttered beginning to roll over.
"No wait, I didn't mean that. I'm sorry." Rae stopped to find her words. "Its just that I've missed you and I thought we were going to hang out but you've been acting very distant. I guess I'm just confused."
"Me too," Justin said quietly looking away from Rae.
"Why do you say that? Why are you confused?"
"I don't know."
"Okay?" Rae said narrowing her eyes at Justin.
Justin sat up on the bed. "I guess I'm just confused why we aren't together. You flirt with me, I flirt with you. We love each other, we're attracted to each other, why aren't we with each other?"
Rae looked at Justin shocked by his question.
"Justin we tried. It was to awkward."
"For who? For you? It wasn't to awkward for me. I enjoyed it."
"I thought we agreed."
"The only reason I agreed is because I didn't want to look stupid. Besides, at that point I knew you didn't like me like that and I wasn't going to push it. Now I can see your attracted to me. I see that there's more than a friendship here."
Rae looked down and started to fidget with the blankets. Justin lifted his hand up to her chin and pulled it up to his eye length.
"Look me in the eye and tell me you don't love me more than a friend."
Rae stared into his eyes for what seemed like forever for him. She then started to look around the room and got teary eyed.
"What is it? Why are you crying."
Rae then looked back to Justin.
"Because I don't know what to do."
At that comment Justin had a sense he knew what the answer was going to be. Feelings of stupidity captured his inner thoughts and his face became flushed.
"You're right Justin."
He quickly looked to Rae with a confused face.
"What do you mean?"
"I can't say I don't love you more than a friend. But, I'm not sure how I feel about you. I don't know it's all confused," Rae said pulling her head to her knees.
Justin sat up completely and pulled his legs to the side of the bed. He got settled next to Rae and pulled her head up from her knees. He brushed her face with his hand and rested it on her upper cheek. He then swiped his thumb across her lips to feel the moistness. Closing her eyes with his other hand he leaned in to gently peck her lips. She quickly opened her eyes but before she could protest he laid a more overwhelming kiss on her, licking her upper and bottom lip. She then placed her hands on the side of his head and ran her fingers through his soft curls. He embraced her with his arms extending around her body and rubbing the small of her back. His hands moved lower until they rested on her inner thigh.
"Justin," she whispered pulling away.
"What?"
"I don't know if we should be doing this."
"Why?" he asked taking his hands away.
She looked to see his beautiful, innocent eyes and smiled.
"I'm not sure why I just said that. I guess I just needed to get it over with," she voiced laughing and leaning back in for another kiss. He smiled at her remark and took her back into his arms. His hands began to roam down her sides and up and down her legs. She pulled her hands to the opening of his shirt and started to lift it. Taking her head from his she moved it down to his chest and placed small kisses up and down, curving around his defined pecks. She then continued to take off the shirt. Justin let out a small giggle.
"What?" Rae asked.
"I told you wanted my body."
They both laughed at his humorous remark.
"What can I say."
He smiled and started to work on the buttons of her shirt. Unbuttoning each one very slowly, he reached the last one and slowly took it off. Still smiling, he started to kiss her neck making his way to her chest. She played with the back of his head, weaving her fingers through out his curls. Suddenly he pulled his head up.
"What?" she asked grabbing his face.
"Where exactly are we taking this?" he asked in hope to go further.
"Whenever it stops feeling as good as it has, we'll stop."
He smiled and gradually pushed her back against the bed. He made his hands down to her pants and slowly unbuttoned them. He then leisurely pulled her pants off observing her muscular thighs and soft skin. Placing soft kisses on her stomach she began to laugh. He knew how ticklish she was so he stopped and stood up. He removed his pants and laid back on the bed. Lying next to her he placed his hands on her face and rubbed them up and down.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Justin asked looking into her eyes.
"I've never been more sure in my life," Rae said grabbing his face and kissing him. She then slid off his boxer briefs. He removed her underwear as well. Slowly entering and working the pace by the expressions on her face, he made love to Rae. After the act of love was through, the couple laid in each other's arms, both satisfied.
"Justin, we should probably get back out there. People are gonna wonder where we went off to."
"I say we make them wonder."
"Justin."
"I don't want to get up. I want to live this forever. Please don't get up."
"You're so weird. We have the rest of our lives to relive this moment."
"To hear you say that makes me feel so good inside."
"I bet it does."
"I'm not talking about just getting some."
"I know, I'm just kidding."
"I love you Rae."
Rae picked her head up from where she rested it on his chest and leaned her chin on it.
"I love you too," she said reaching up to him for a kiss.
"Okay, I guess we can get up now. Even though we'll have a better time in here."
"We can have a fun time in here later," Rae said seductively.
"You are so bad."
"Aren't I."
