Chapter 3
When she reached her destination she got out of the car still in awe of the horrible news. She walked in side and continued upstairs to her room without a word to everyone huddled in the kitchen.
"Oh no," Justin said seeing the fear in her face.
"What? What's wrong?" Christina questioned in confusion.
Without answering, Justin walked away to Rae's room.
"What's going on?" asked Joey.
"She just got back from the doctor. Obviously, she didn't receive good news," answered Chris.
"Why did she go to the doctor?" asked J.C.
"She was concerned about this lump on her back," Chris answered realizing what the problem might be.
"Oh no," Christina said in shock standing up preparing to follow Justin.
"Christina, I think we should leave them alone for a minute," Chris suggested.
Justin proceeded up the stairs and saw that her door was closed. He knocked lightly but heard nothing so he slowly opened the door to see Rae lying on the bed. He quietly walked over and sat down next to her while placing his hands on her back. He heard her sulking in her pillow and knew something was terribly wrong.
"Rae, talk to me."
There was no reply.
"Please Rae, I'm getting scared."
She turned around with her face all flushed.
Hesitantly, she voiced, "It's a tumor."
Justin's mouth dropped and the lining of his eyes turned red.
"No." Justin said in disbelief.
"Yeah. Well, that's what the doctor thinks. I have to go in tomorrow for more tests."
"Oh Rae, I'm so sorry."
She began to cry more when she saw the sadness on his face. Justin leaned down to her and pulled his legs up on the bed. Placing his hands on her back, he began to rub them up and down.
"Everything is going to be all right Rae-Rae," Justin whispered into her ear.
Rae looked over to see a smile on his face and the parallel lines that shaped her mouth slowly curved upwards.
"I hope so."
Justin had known Rae since she was born. Rae's mom, Kathryn, was single when she gave birth to Rae and since Lynn, Justin's mom, was also single the two helped each other out. When Rae was born, her and her mom moved in with Lynn into a small apartment in Memphis. Justin was two years older than Rae, but they still got along great. When Lynn met her new husband, Paul, she moved in with him leaving Kathryn and Rae in the apartment. However, Lynn and Kathryn remained the best of friends. When Justin went to be on The Mickey Mouse club Lynn decided she was going to relocate with her son. She persuaded Kathryn to also relocate and find a job in Orlando so the two could continue to live near each other. They were also afraid to separate Justin and Rae because the two had grown as close as siblings. After many years of working in Orlando, Kathryn was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had all the proper surgery done and finally overcame it. After losing her job to absence of working she decided to move back to Memphis where she could get a better job with better pay. Rae, being seventeen at this time, decided to stay in Orlando and live with Lynn and Justin and go to school there. Rae eventually found an apartment with her friend Christina and lived there as she went to college. She kept a close relationship with Lynn, seeing as how Lynn was a mother figure for Rae when her mother went back to Memphis. She also remained Justin's best friend despite all the times he was gone due to touring. They tried being a couple but the feeling was to awkward for the both of them, even though they were both highly attracted to each other.
The two sat in silence until there was a sudden knock on the door.
"Come in," Justin shouted.
The door opened to six worried faces.
"Rae are you okay?" Christina asked anxiously.
Rae turned around to see the fear in their faces.
Smiling she told them, "I'm not sure, but Justy tells me I'll be fine."
"What's wrong?"
"The doc told me I might have a tumor."
Six faces turned dead serious and gasps escaped their mouths.
"But Rae is strong and she has nothing to worry about, so get that look off your faces. She is gonna be just fine," Justin insisted.
"It's just a little shocking, but he's right Rae, your gonna be okay. Your a strong person and we all know that," Chris assured.
"Thanks guys. I don't know what I would have done if you guys weren't here," Rae said smiling.
Everyone proceeded over to the bed showering Rae with hugs and kisses and the tension was broken between everyone. But, the fear of dying still surrounded Rae's inner thoughts.
"So, what's the agenda for the day?" asked J.C. rubbing his hands together.
"Rae, I think you should probably stay home and get some rest today," commented Justin.
"Justin, I'm not about to stay home on a beautiful day knowing it may be the last one I see. Don't sit here and try and protect me from something that obviously has control over me. Staying home in my bed all day isn't gonna make it go away."
"Sorry, geez, I just thought the doctor would want you to stay home and get some rest."
"Well, he doesn't."
"How about a movie," Joey suggested trying to change the subject.
"Sounds good to me," J.C. added.
"How about we all meet back up here after we all get changed and caravan it to the movies," Chris proposed.
"Okay, an hour long enough for everyone?" Joey asked.
"Yeah," Lance answered for everyone.
They all got up to leave and Justin stayed lying on the bed as Rae got up.
"Aren't you going with us?" Rae asked to Justin.
"Nah, I need to get some stuff done," he replied wiping his hands over his face.
"Justin I didn't mean to come off like that earlier. I just don't want to sit around when I know I might die tomorrow."
"First of all, I don't want to hear you talking like that. Secondly, everyone could die tomorrow. And lastly..." Justin trailed off and turned on his side.
"Justin, I know everyone could die at anytime, but not everyone knows it might be soon. I know that this tumor could take over my body and I will have no control, that's the only reason why I'm talking like this. I'm scared as shit that I'm gonna die and it doesn't help when you sit here and tell me to stay home in my bed all day when I could be out having a good time."
"I'm just trying to look out for you. That's all. I don't want to see you die either and I'm scared to. Your not the only one affected by this."
"I know I'm not Justin. I never said I was,"
"So don't think that I don't want you to have a good time. I do and I want it to be with me. I just was making a suggestion and trying to care," Justin said cutting Rae off.
"Okay, well thank you. Sorry for being so anal about it, but I need to get in the shower."
Rae walked away. Justin sat up and ran his hands through his hair.
"I knew this life was too good to be true," Justin thought out loud, standing up and exiting the room.
Chapter 4
An hour later, everyone returned to Rae's and Christina's house except for Justin.
"Hey Rae, did Justin tell you if he was coming?" asked Chris.
"Not really, in those words, but I doubt he is."
"Why?" Joey asked.
"We had a little argument. But hey you guys go ahead, I'm gonna stop by his house and maybe try and change his mind about going."
"Yeah I bet you will," Chris said under his breath.
"I heard that Chris."
"What, I didn't say anything."
"Yeah, okay."
Chapter 6
The next morning Rae got up early and went over to the hospital. When she arrived she turned off the car and just sat in the car. Exhaling deeply, she repeated to herself, "everything is going to be fine." She opened the car door and slowly made her way into the building.
"Hi, I'm here for some x-rays, where would I go?" Rae asked.
"Do you know what doctor it is?"
"Oh yeah, I just go to him?"
"Yes."
"Okay, it's Dr. Taylor."
"All right, you can go ahead and go up, I'll tell him you're on your way up there."
"Okay, thanks."
Rae walked towards the elevator doors and waited for them to reach her level. When reaching the ground the doors swung open. She walked onto them slowly and pressed the button for floor number four. 'Please God, let me be okay' she thought to herself squeezing the sides of her pants. The doors opened when reaching floor four and she walked out. She saw the door to Dr. Taylor's office was open so she walked in to see Dr. Taylor on the phone. He lifted his pointed finger to let her know it would be just a second. Moments later he hung up the phone.
"Well, hello Rae, how are you feeling today? Better I hope."
"Yeah, a little, still a little nervous."
"Totally understandable, but I want to assure you, everything is gonna be just fine, okay?"
"Okay."
"Good, so why don't you follow me. I wanna get you into one of those robe things your mom always loved wearing."
"Ha. I remember she used to complain for hours about how uncomfortable they were."
"Well, hospitals aren't really known for the quality of there clothes."
"Yeah."
"Okay just go into there and get changed then meet me back right here and I will take you down to x-ray," he said pointing into a small closet.
"Okay."
Rae walked into the closet and changed into the robe. She walked out and met up with Dr. Taylor and he took her down to floor two.
"Have you called your mom and told her yet?" Dr. Taylor asked.
"No, I didn't want to worry her until I know for sure what's going on. You know how she gets."
"Yeah, that was probably a good idea, but I do want you to call her as soon as we do find out."
"Oh yes definitely."
"Okay, I need you to lie down right here on your stomach so we can get some x-rays of your back," he said pointing out to her where she needed to lay.
"Okay," Rae said lying down.
"This is gonna take a while, so just get comfortable. You can even doze off if you'd like."
"Yeah, okay."
After about thirty minutes of x-rays and repositioning the cameras, it was over.
"All right, good. We need to do one more thing though. I'm gonna have a nurse come and take some tissue from the area on your back so we have a little more to look at."
"Okay."
"I'm not gonna lie to you, it's gonna hurt."
"I know. Needle, spine, I already put the two together, but I rather find out what this is so lets get it over with."
"Good attitude Rae, I like to hear that."
Rae gave him a half smile. She had no idea why she just said that. She was terrified of needles and the fact she acted so calm was surprising. After the nurse took the tissue Rae let out a deep breath. The testing portion was over.
"Rae, I'm gonna give you a call tonight about what is going to happen. Then I want you to call your mother and tell her what's up to. She's probably gonna want to make a short visit down here."
"Okay."
"And that's all. You can go ahead and get changed back into your clothes. Thanks for being a good sport. You're really hangin in there."
"Thanks, talk to you tonight."
"Yeah, make sure your there. It will be around eight."
"Okay, bye."
"Bye."
Rae changed her clothes and continued downstairs to leave.
"All right girl, will see you hopefully at the movies," Joey said.
"Yeah, bye guys."
"Later."
Lance took Chris, Joey, and Katie with him in his 4 Runner and J.C. took Christina with him in his Jeep. Rae drove herself over to Justin's house. When she pulled up she saw his car in the driveway joined by an unfamiliar car. 'I wonder who that is?' she thought to herself getting out of the car. She proceeded to the front door and rang the doorbell. She saw Justin coming through the window and heard him talking to someone. He opened the door to see Rae standing on the other side.
"Rae, what are you doing here? Why didn't you go to the movie?"
"I came over to see if you would change your mind about going, but I guess you already have other plans."
"It's not like plans, I'm just gonna clean my house up."
"Who's here?"
"Oh, Tyler stopped by to see where his brother was."
"Tyler?"
"Tyler Chasez."
"Oh. Well, how about you and him come with me to the movies. Than he could see J.C."
"Well, I'll ask him if he wants but I don't really feel up to it."
"Why's that?"
"I'm kind of tired."
"Yeah, but watching a movie doesn't require to much energy."
"And I need to clean."
"Justin, you have a housekeeper who comes every afternoon. Why are you trying to avoid me?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
"Hey Rae," Tyler shouted noticing her through the open door.
"Hey Tyler. How's it been?"
"Good, how about yourself?"
"It's been all right."
"Have you seen my brother?"
"Yeah, he's headed over to the movies right now."
"Oh, cool. I need to talk to him."
"Yeah, he just headed over there."
"Cool, thanks. Well, I'm gonna go. Bye Justin. Bye Rae," Tyler said leaving the house and jumping in his car.
"Bye T," Justin said waving.
"Can I come in?" Rae asked.
"Rae."
"What?"
"You don't have to ask."
"Okay," she said walking past him into the house.
"Whoa, this place is trashed," Rae said sarcastically seeing that the house was spotless.
"Okay, I just didn't feel like going to the movies because I was still a little upset about this morning."
"What's there to be upset about Justin. I thought we settled it."
"Maybe you did, but I'm still mad."
Rae walked over to Justin putting her arms around him and smiling.
"Justy, I'm sorry I got mad at you and you were right. My doctor told me to get some rest, but I don't want to. I want to hang out with my friends."
"Fine."
"I want to see a smile on your face Justy."
Rae began to tickle his sides and his frown broke.
"That's better. Now can we go to the damn movies."
"I guess."
Justin grabbed his shirt to put over his tank top and they left the house.
