Chapter 1

"Shh, she's coming!" insisted Justin as he dashed across the dark room looking for a place to hide.

Rae walked up her front steps to see the apartment was pitch black. Assuming her roommate had gone out, she pulled out her key and began to unlock the door. She opened the door, stepped inside and reached for the light switch to turn it on.

"Surprise!"

Rae instantly pulled her hands up to her mouth as her eyes grew wide. A crowd of people filled her living room dressed in party hats.

"What is this?" she questioned in shock.

"Uh, I'm not sure if you've figured out what's going on yet, but this would be what you call a surprise party," answered Chris sarcastically.

"Thanks for clearing that up, I couldn't quite put my finger on it," replied Rae with a witty smile.

"So, who's responsible for this little surprise party?" questioned Rae.

"Justin actually arranged this all on his own," answered Joey giving Justin props.

"Yeah, my ass," Rae commented.

"We'll since we're on the subject I would like to add your,"

"Justin," Rae said cutting Justin off from his dirty comment.

"Seriously, who put this together?"

"Seriously, I did," answered Justin.

"Well, thank you, that was very nice of you."

"No problem, turn around."

"Why?"

"Just do it."

Rae proceeded to turn around.

"Justin what is it?"

"Thank you so much," Justin said gazing at the lower portion of her body.

"For what, oh, you're sick, you know that?" Rae said hitting his arm.

"I know, isn't he," Joey added.

"Joey don't talk, we saw you looking," commented J.C.

Joey looked to his girlfriend shaking his head no.

"Hey girl!" Christina exclaimed as she walked up to her best friend and roommate, Rae.

"Happy Birthday!"

"Thanks."

"I wasn't sure if this was really gonna work, I mean with Justin in charge and all," Christina commented half smiling at Justin.

"Hey now, I did a beautiful job."

"Man what are you talking about? If you're giving yourself credit for the decorations, stop while you're ahead. You didn't put them up," Chris said nudging Justin in his side.

"Oh yeah. No, I know, I'm talking about how I arranged the whole setup for her surprise and the look on her face. Classic." Justin said smiling at his accomplishment.

"I hate to bust your little bubble, but I wasn't the least bit surprised," Rae vented with a look of seriousness on her face.

Justin's smile dropped to a frown.

"I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I was actually quite shocked."

"Good. There's more though. I can't wait till you see what I got you."

"It'll be a surprise if it's not something he doesn't want," J.C. said laughing and insinuating it had happened before.

"No, this is the best present anyone could ever ask for."

"I can't wait," Rae said sarcastically.

"Okay, okay, I'll give it to you know."
Before she could protest, he ran off to the back to get the present. He returned only after seconds with a small, square box.

"Justin, you didn't have to," Rae said with her most fake smile.

"I know, but your nineteen, you deserve a present from me and not my mom. I actually put some thought into this one."

Rae began to tear away the shiny red paper. It was a wide but small box that had tape wrapped around it. She began to work on the tape but it appeared he had wrapped the tape around more than once making it quite difficult to open.

"Justin, this better be good."

"Oh it is, keep opening."

She finally removed all of the tape and lifted up the top of the box.

"Oh my goodness," Rae expressed in astonishment.

"What is it?" questioned Lance.

"It's a picture of me and Justin in the bath tub from when I was like two years old. This is so old, where did you get this?"

"Well, my mom showed me it and I knew that this was something you would want. So I asked her for it and decided to get a nice frame and give it to you for your birthday."

"Oh, thanks Justy. This is to good." Rae reached out her arms and gave Justin a hug.

"You're welcome."

"Only Justin would give someone a picture of himself," J.C. said laughing.
The group laughed at his humor.

"Well, the night is still young, let's say we go out to the pool and have a party," suggested Chris.

"Good plan," commented J.C.

The group moved outside and they partied themselves right into the next morning.

"Wow, it's getting late. We should probably call it a night," suggested Lance.

"Ha, I think J.C. already did," Chris said pointing to J.C. who had fallen asleep on one of the lawn chairs.
"Well, there goes your romantic evening with J.C., Christina," Joey said laughing.

"Bite me Joey. There's nothing between me and J.C."

"Sure. Just like Rae and Justin are just friends."

"We are Joey," Justin said.

"Justin, everyone knows you guys are having a secret affair."

"We've tried, it didn't work out. Remember Joe, your the one who caught us on my bed," Rae said with a smile.

"Stop, I'm getting a visual." Joey shut his eyes making a face of disgust.

"J.C., wake up! We're gonna go inside and go to bed," Chris yelled.

J.C.'s eyes opened and he suddenly jumped up and started to walk inside.

"There ya' go."

They all walked back inside and got situated. J.C. crashed on the floor in the living room and Joey and his girlfriend, Katie, snuggled on the couch. Christina went to her room, who was later joined by Lance, who got gypped out of a sleeping spot. Chris also stayed in the living room and watched Cartoon Network. Justin and Rae stayed in Rae's bed like they had countless nights before.

"Justin, thanks again for that picture, it's too awesome."

"I knew you would like it."

"I do, it brings back old memories. The days before your fame. Speaking of which, when do you guys go back out on the road?"

"In a few weeks."

"Well, it is good to see all of you guys even though we just saw each other like not even two weeks ago."

"I know. I think this sets a record."

"Possibly. I remember when you first got started with touring. I didn't see you for five months."

"That was a hard five months too. I thought I was gonna die of home sickness."
Rae started to fidget under the blankets.
"What are you doing?" Justin questioned with a curious look on his face.

"I have an itch on my back, but I can't reach it."

"Turn around, where is it?"

"Go up, no down, a little more, to the right, the right Justin."

"Sorry."

"There you go."

"Hey what is that?" Justin inquired.

"What's what?"

"You have like this, oh my gosh."

"What?"

"There is a lump on your back."

"What? Where?"

"Right here, you feel that?" Justin asked picking her hand up to feel it.

"Eww, what is it?"

"I don't know, it's grose though, you need to get that checked out."

"Okay, thanks Dr. Timberlake."

"Anytime," Justin replied with a smile.

Rae ignored it and after talking for a while they finally fell asleep.

Chapter 2
The next morning Rae woke up to see Justin was still asleep. She got out of bed, brushed her teeth, and went downstairs. J.C. was still laying balled up on the ground trembling at the breeze that blew from the air vent next to his feet. Chris had already woken up as well and was sitting in the kitchen. Katie and Joey still rested peacefully, snuggled on the couch. Rae didn't check in Christina's room, but she assumed she was still asleep as well as Lance.

"Morning Chris," Rae said walking into the kitchen.
"Oh well good morning my little ray of sunshine!" Chris exclaimed with a smile stretched across his face.

"Chris you really need to cheer up."

"I know, I'm not a morning person," Chris said mocking a gay person.

"Yeah, right," Rae said in disbelief.

"I hope you don't mind me eating your food. I's was hungry," Chris said patting his stomach.

"You know I don't care, Chris."

"Note to self, she doesn't care if I eat her food. Okay it's in the brain."

"You're so weird."

"Yeah. So, how did you and Justin sleep, good?" Chris questioned while winking and nudging her side.

"Shut up. Despite what you think, we are just friends."

"I know, I'm just messin' with you."

"Oh Chris, I need you to take a look at something," Rae insisted as she turned around and lifted up the back of her shirt.

"Whoa girl, don't get freaky on me."

"Chris, this is serious, do you see something?"

"Eww, what is it?"

"I don't know, I just discovered it last night."

"It almost looks as if your spine is swollen."

"Great."

"I'm sure it's nothing bad though. You probably just hit something."

"I don't think so, I need to go to the doctor and have it checked out. I'm kinda worried."

"Well, that's probably a good idea. Don't worry though, it's probably nothing."
Rae stood in silence for a second. She then picked up the phone and dialed a number. She waited for an answer.

"Hello, Dr. Taylor's office, can I help you?"

"Yeah, hi, is Dr. Taylor free for a quick phone call?"

"Yes, one moment please." The receptionist put her on hold accompanied by slow classical music.

Rae covered the phone and whispered to Chris, "I hate when they put on this damn music." Seconds later, Dr. Taylor picked up the line.

"This is Dr. Taylor, can I help you?"

"Hey Dr. Taylor, it's Rae."

"Oh hey Rae, how are you?"

"I'm good but I need to make an appointment."

"Is something wrong?"

"Well, I don't know. There's an area on my back, like on the spine, that looks and feels swollen. I need you to take a look at it."

"Are you free right now?" asked Dr. Taylor.

"I can be."

"Okay, well, how about you come on in and I'll take a look at it for you."

"Okay, I'll be there in a few."

"All right."

"Thank you Dr. Taylor."

"No problem, bye-bye."

"Bye."

Rae hung up the phone.

"So are you gonna go right now?" Chris asked obviously not having observed the previous conversation.

"Yeah, I'll be back in like an hour. So if anybody asks, that's where I am and that's when I'll be back."

"Okay dokey."

"All righty, I'm gonna get some clothes on, see ya'."

"Later babe."

Rae walked upstairs. In the midst of pulling up her pants Justin woke up.

"Where are you going?" he asked tiredly, rubbing his eyes.

"I'm gonna go see Dr. Taylor right quick about that bump on my back."

"Oh, did you need me to go with you?"

"No, go back to sleep, you look dead tired."

"Sure?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine Justy. Go back to bed, I'll be back in an hour."

"Okay." Justin laid back down and shut his eyes as Rae left the room. She got into her car and drove out to the doctor's office. It was located at the hospital because Dr. Taylor specialized in cancer treatment there. She was linked to him because her mom had been recovering from breast cancer when living in Orlando, and he was supposedly the best doctor there for her. On the drive there, Rae began to think of the possibilities that this was cancer related. It ran in the family. It was a possibility she might get it one day. All these thoughts caused Rae to feel very scared. She was afraid of walking into that office and seeing the disappointed look on his face when he saw the lump on her spine. She quickly thought of losing her life and not being able to see her close friends and family ever again. All these thoughts of sadness and fear filled her head as she pulled into a parking space. Nervously, she walked up to the counter to sign in and took a seat. After moments of waiting she was called in.

"Rae, Dr. Taylor will see you now," voiced the secretary.

"Thank you," Rae said standing up and placing the magazine on the table. She walked into his office seeing him bent over filling out some papers.

"Rae, it's good to see you again, take a seat."
"Yeah, it's been a while, how have you been?" Rae questioned getting more comfortable on the cushion.

"Great. The wife and kids are keeping me busy, yet very happy. How's your mom doing?"

"Oh, she's great. She loves the new job but misses me terribly."

"Well, it's hard for her to be so far away."

"Yeah."

"So, let's take a look at your back."

Rae turned to the side lifting up her shirt and gesturing him to where the lump was located. He examined it for a few moments, pushing it in and out, squeezing it, and marking notes on his notepad. His face then became slightly pale and the neutral slant of his mouth turned to a frown.

"What is it? What's wrong?"

"Rae, nothing is wrong, I don't want to jump to any conclusions."

"It's cancerous isn't it?"

"I'm not saying that. It might just be a cyst."

"Please don't lie to me Dr. Taylor, be up front with me. I hate when you try and avoid the truth with me."

"Okay, I'll tell you what I think it is. I think you might have what we call a meta static tumor growing on your spinal chord."

Rae's mouth dropped in shock of his comment.

"Rae, it's not serious yet. It looks to be just forming, which is very good. We can get it out of there now and have no more problems with it."

"Meaning surgery?"

"Yes, but this surgery is done by a special laser, leaving very small marks that are hardly visible."

"Is this a form of cancer."

"Hopefully, no. It appears to only be a tumor. Not all tumors are cancerous. It is very serious though if we don't act fast."
"What do you mean, what will happen?"

"Well, if it grows larger it could cause severe pain, loss of sensation, and possibly even paralysis."

"Oh my God."

"Rae, if we don't act fast, which we will. I'm gonna need you to come in tomorrow morning for some tests and if it is what I think it is, the surgery will be this week."

Rae sat in awe as she faced the harsh reality. Her biggest fear was now becoming something she was gonna have to deal with.

"So, tomorrow I need to come in to run some tests and then possible surgery later this week," Rae said with a shake in her voice.

"Sweetheart, you're gonna be fine. I promise you. Don't get all worried and stressed out. I am here to make sure this is taken under control and it will be. Go home, get some rest and I will see you tomorrow, okay?"

"Okay," she said exhaling a deep breath and jumping down from the seat.

"Your gonna be fine."

"Thank you Dr. Taylor."

"You're welcome, bye now."

"Bye."

Rae exited the office and walked out to her car. She put her keys in the ignition but just stared out into space. 'Why me? My worst fear is becoming reality,' she thought as her eyes welled up with tears. Catching a grip of herself, she started the car and continued home.
