"The First Step

Well, you've finally done it. Whether through using the patches, the gum, cold turkey you've quit smoking. Congratulations, you've taken the first step. You've made a decision that is already bringing about healthful changes in your body that are only going to increase with time: Within seventy-two hoursall the nicotine will be out of your system. Within, ten years, your lungs will resemble those of person who never smoked. you're going to find you have much more energy and vitality to do the things you reallywant to do-- to enjoy life."



But what if you're not "there" yet- at that point of decision- what can you do to get there? Here are some tips..

- MAKE A LIST of all the reasons why you would like to quit and read it often throughout the day- the smelly clothes, the smelly hair, the morning cough, the shortness of breath- and your special reasons.

- Don't think it is going to be easy to quit, so don't be surprised if you become irritable, edgy or otherwise short-tempered. But DON'T LET THOSE FEELING OVERWHELM YOU or cause you to pick up a cigarette. They will pass! Don't resist them. Just notice them and let them be there and BREATHE-- they will pass just that much faster.

- Make another list (make it a long list) of HOW all aspects of YOUR LIFE WILL BE BETTER after you quit smoking. Read it often and visualize yourself smoke-free.



- DRINK LOTS OF WATER Not juices or alcohol as drinking them in excessive amounts will only make giving up cigarettes more difficult.



- GET A SUPPORT TEAM, especially those closest to you. Ask them to be patient with you.



- If you need to do something with your hands (or mouth), cut up a straw and use that.



- BREAK YOUR ROUTINE. Do something, anything different. Get involved in smoke-free activities. Volunteer. Begin a walking program.



- Remember: 1/ There is no such thing as ONEcigarette! 2/ There are a million good reasons to quit smoking. There are a thousand excuses to start again, (any excuse will do!) Or there are NONE- it's up to you.
