Apathetic Nation

“Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude towards it, for that determines our success or failure.”

                                                                        ~Norman Vincent Peale

In my four years at Woodruff, one of the main things that bothered me is the amount of apathy my fellow students have. Apathy, defined as a lack of interest or concern, is a growing problem at Woodruff. An increasing number of students don’t care about their schoolwork, or even school in general. They lack school spirit, or even school concern.

And it’s not just in the schoolwork department. The number of students who brushed off last year’s shooting as “not that big a deal” is alarming. What’s worse is that even more students thought that the shooting outside Woodruff earlier this year was no reason to get concerned, since it hadn’t happened IN the school. That makes tons of sense…. it’s not a big deal if there’s a shooting outside the building, and its not a big deal if there’s a shooting in the building (note the sarcasm).

These kids just don’t care about anything. I’m so sick of hearing “shit, I don’t see why we gotta learn this”. It’s a school. You’re there to learn! Even though these students may not want to further their education beyond learning to say, “ya want fries with that?”, others do. The ones who do want to learn are stifled by being in a class full of dumbasses that don’t care about proper English, history, government, or anything related to the intelligent modern world.

The utter lack of school spirit is another thing. Several students don’t care about supporting the school in any aspect, whether it’s sports, music, or any of the various other clubs. Yes, our sports teams aren’t the greatest. However, it’d still be nice to show them some support.

It’s the little things you do in high school that make it either good or bad. If you participate in classes, clubs and activities, you’re going to have a good time at some point. On the flip side, if you just wander to school, not caring how you do in class, not participating in any school activities, you’re probably not going to have a good experience. Basically, apathy is……….never mind. I just don’t care anymore.
