Beautiful, Realistic, Economical, Weather-Resistant, Artificial Palm Trees!

My name is Roger "Doc" Handley. I have always loved palm trees, but they
do not survive very well where I live. I tried for years to find an
attractive artificial palm tree that would be durable and affordable. But,
the only ones I could find were terribly expensive, not for outdoor use,
not very pretty, or all three!

When I retired as dean of a community college, I knew exactly what I wanted
to do--manufacture weather-resistant artificial palm trees that I would be
proud to own, and that someone like me could afford to buy. After literally
scouring the world for attractive, affordable, weather-resistant fronds,
and developing my own technique for carving, shaping, and coloring preserved
wood trunks, I was able to design a tree that measured up to my own stringent
specifications.

These life-sized outdoor artificial palm trees feature trunks up to 13' 10"
in length. The 13' 10" tree with 39 cycas fronds costs $369. The 12 foot
tree with 39 cycas fronds costs $359; the 12 foot tree with 45 areca fronds
costs $309. The 10 foot tree with 39 cycas fronds costs $249; the ten foot
tree with 45 areca fronds fronds costs $299. The "nine" (8'11") foot tree
with 45 areca fronds costs $299, and the eight foot tree with 45 areca
fronds costs $289. All of these weather-resistant artificial palm trees are
available with either palm gray trunks with charcoal undertones and
contrasting highlights, or "natural" trunks (mahogany brown trunks with
charcoal undertones and contrasting highlights.)

Delivery is available throughout the continental United States via common
carrier. Please e-mail your Zip Code to me, along with the number and sizes
of trees you are considering, and I will calculate exact delivery charges
to your home or business.

Trees with trunks 8'11" or shorter can be delivered via Fed Ex to most
points in the continental USA for $48.00 to $55.00 per tree. Trees with
trunks 10' or longer have to be delivered via Old Dominion Freight Line.
Old Dominion (and other trucking companies) has a high minimum charge
and a high residential surcharge. One-tree shipments to a home via Old
Dominion are relatively expensive. Shipments to a business address via
Old Dominion are less expensive (usually $55.00 less than residential
shipments), and shipments of three or more trees via Old Dominion are
relatively inexpensive.

The delivery fee to businesses in the Southeast or Midwest for larger
trees averages $90.00 for the first tree and $25.00 for each additional
tree; the delivery fee to homes in the Southeast or Midwest for larger
trees averages $145.00 for the first tree and $25.00 for each additional
tree. (Please note that only "storefront" businesses with regular
business hours qualify for the business rate.) Rates to the Northeast
or West are somewhat more. Please email us your zip code and the number
and size of trees you are considering for an exact shipping quote.

There is no sales tax on orders shipped outside Alabama, so the total cost
is the price of the trees plus the shipping charge.

You may pay by personal check, credit card, bank transfer, or certified check
(if you wish to avoid delay for personal check clearance). (Please do not mail
cash!) Credit card and bank transfer payments should be made via the PayPal
internet payment service. To order your outdoor artificial palm tree, please
print and mail the order form below or email the information requested on the
order form to artificialpalm@hotmail.com. Please indicate your method of
payment with your order. If you are paying via PayPal, just go to
www.paypal.com and follow the instructions. (PayPal payments should be made
to North River Trading Company at artificialpalm@hotmail.com.)

These trees are beautiful (see photos at my new web site:
http://artificialpalm.freeservers.com), and your satisfaction is guaranteed! If
you are not 100% satisfied with your new artificial palm tree, return it to me
postpaid within 30 days after delivery for a full refund (less delivery charges).
Tell your friends that your new artificial palm tree is not real (they may not
know.) They will never guess how little you paid!

If you do not wish to send a check with your order or use the PayPal service,
I can ship your artificial palm tree C.O.D.; although, this is somewhat more
expensive for you. NOTE: Please call my home phone(205-689-8477) or email
(artificialpalm@hotmail.com) me for availability and estimated delivery time
before ordering. These trees are hand-crafted, and I am not fast!

If you want additional information about my outdoor artificial palm trees,
e-mail me at artificialpalm@hotmail.com or call me at 205-689-8477. This is my
home phone, so please try again if you don't reach me the first try! Please note
that I have included answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" below.

Photos can be viewed at artificialpalm.freeservers.com. The trunks and fronds
can be interchanged to suit your own preferences. The trunks I am currently
shipping have deeper, more regular grooves than the first-generation trunks,
and feature a subtle interplay of colors. The "natural" trunks have charcoal
undertones, mahogany overtones, and contrasting highlights. The palm gray trunks
have charcoal undertones, gray overtones, and contrasting highlights.

If your computer cannot display the images at http://artificialpalm.freeservers.com,
go to http://groups.msn.com/artificialpalmtrees or email me for photos (or any
additional information that you may need). If all else fails, email your
mailing address, and I will send the photos to you via the U.S. Postal Service.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How tall are the trees? Is a ten foot tree ten feet tall?

Answer: The length refers to the actual trunk length. A ten foot tree has a trunk that is ten feet long. Trees are typically placed about 18" in the ground, and the fronds rise above the tree two feet or more. So, the trunk of a ten foot tree installed will be about 8 1/2 feet high; the top of the fronds will be over 10 1/2 feet high.

2. How is the tree attached to the ground?

Answer: It is "planted" in the ground just like a wooden post. The trunks of North River outdoor artificial palm trees are made of pressure-treated pine--the same material used for most utility poles. They will stay in direct contact with the ground for many years without deterioration.

3. How can I install a tree on a concrete deck?

Answer: There are basically three ways. One, you can get a large planter and anchor it to the slab or put a lot of ballast in it. Two, you can cut a hole the size of the trunk (usually 4" - 5") in the slab and dig a few inches past the slab; then mount the tree in the hole. Three, you can drill a hole about 3/4" diameter through the slab and drive a solid steel bar into the hole and about a foot into the underlying soil. Leave at least 6" of the bar above the slab. Drill a slightly larger hole in the base of the trunk, and slip the trunk over the "artificial root."

If you mount directly on the slab, as in the second and third examples, you can build a small "planter" around the base of the tree and put soil or rocks in it. That makes the tree appear to be growing in a large void in the concrete.

4. Will North River Palms endure extreme heat and cold?

Answer: Extreme heat or cold do not adversely affect North River Palms.

5. Will high wind damage a North River Palm?

Answer: If you use the adhesive supplied with your tree and fill each frond hole in the trunk with the frond stems and adhesive, your tree will withstand relatively high winds. Trees in Alabama have withstood gale force (65+ mph) winds without losing fronds. These same winds uprooted pine trees and hardwood trees. If fronds should come out, clean the mounting hole with a nail or drill bit that is slightly larger than the frond stem and re-insert the frond with plenty of exterior grade Liquid Nails adhesive, or equivalent.

Some people like to remove the fronds during winter months, so they do not use the permanent adhesive supplied with the tree. They use a less permanent adhesive, such as silicon, or no adhesive at all. These trees will withstand normal winds with no problem, but can lose fronds in extremely high winds.

6. Will snow damage my tree?

Answer: A constant snow load can make the fronds tend to sag more than usual. They can be re-bent into their normal position. Otherwise, snow, ice, or frigid temperatures do not adversely affect the trees.

7. How long are the fronds?

Answer: The cycas fronds are 36 inches long; the areca fronds are 30 inches long.

8. Are longer fronds available?

Answer: I do sell longer fronds on a special order basis for those who need fronds for their own trunks. My areca fronds work well with a 12' tree that is 5 1/2 inches or less in diameter at the top, but are not suitable for a 14' tree. For that reason, I ship 14' trees only with the cycas fronds, which are 6 inches longer than the areca fronds. The cycas fronds are the longest that I typically use. Fronds longer than 36 inches can be problematic in supporting their own weight and in resisting wind damage. Selection of outdoor artificial palm fronds involves several considerations, including strength, weight, durability, appearance, and cost. Fronds over 3' in length are inherently less durable and much more expensive, but are available on a special order basis.

9. How long does it take to get my tree?

I finish the trees as the orders are received. It usually takes two to three weeks to get your tree shipped after payment is made. Transit time to most points in the USA is one week or less. Total lag time after the order is consummated is two to four weeks.

10. Can I order just fronds?

Yes. The areca fronds are $4.05 each; the cycas fronds are $7.50 each. Please call or email for pricing on the longer fronds. Shipping is $4.50 plus 6% of the cost of the fronds.

11. What should I look for in an artificial palm tree?

Durability, realistic appearance, and economy are the three most important factors. You want your tree to look good and last a long time. If you can buy a durable, good looking tree without mortgaging the ranch, you have come to the right place!
