At one time Biltmore was used as a camping and hunting grounds by one or more friendly Native American tribes, perhaps the Winnebagos and Pottawatomies. This can be attested to by the fact that a number of artifacts such as pearheads and hatchets have been found by the early residents.
Biltmore in the early 1900s was known as Grace Estate, Grace being the general contractor who constructed the old County Building and City Hall located in Chicago at Clark and LaSalle Streets. The property consisted of 880 acres with Honey Lake on the east and Grassy Lake on the west.
In the early 1920s, the estate was purchased by Clifford Leonard, Sr., of Leonard Construction Company. Not too long prior to 1926, Mr. Leonard made a contract with one Abe Nahin to develop the property. Originally planned as a weekend rendezvous, it was subdivided into 2300 single lots. Later Biltmoreans were to find life in their community too pleasant to be confined to weekends, and the summer restrictions were changed to assure substantial year-round homes.
Developer Nahin divided the property into lots and put in roads and various improvements including the golf course, tennis courts, and extensive toboggan and ski slide.
