If you prefer to look at a list of names rather than images of the characters in the character select screen, you can do so by pressing L1 and R1 simutaneously before and while you select Arcade mode from the title screen.
Galaga secrets
While the main game loads, you get to play a version of Galaga. You will be presented with a challenge stage in which you must shoot 40 enemy ships before advancing to the next bonus stage. There are eight stages in total. The Cross button fires while the top (Triangle) button offers auto fire. If you miss all 40 ships, you may repeat the stage by pressing Select. If you press Select at the end of the eighth stage, you will be returned to the first stage again.
You will gain access to Devil Kazuya if you defeat Galaga with only one continue. This is best done if you clear the opening stage in 18.5 seconds or less, which awards you another ship (double shooter).
To automatically start with dual ships in Galaga, press and hold Up, L1, the Triangle button and the Cross button on controller two while the machine powers up.

Using bosses
All bosses can be accessed once defeated. This is achieved by turning the difficulty setting in the Options screen to Easy. Each character has its own mid-level boss; Heihachi Mishima being the last. You will gain access to them once you defeat the mid-level boss and Heihachi. The bosses will then be accessible to either the left of Yoshimitsu or the right of Michelle in Arcade mode. In the two-player mode, the bosses will be displayed as a long list of names. To access Heihachi, you must defeat him and all characters before him without using continues. The opponents for Heihachi are all the mid level bosses, with his boss being Devil Kazuya. To access Devil Kazuya, you must defeat the Galaga section and be in Arcade mode. Position your selection on Kazuya and press Start rather than punching or kicking.

Tekken 2

Two of the secret characters are random fighters that pop up every once in a while during a game against the computer. They are Roger the Kangaroo and Alex the Lizard. Roger and Alex borrow techniques from many characters, particularly King. Roger is a cute, furry little Kangaroo sporting a pair of boxing gloves and Alex is an ugly, man-sized lizard. Despite their humorous appearances, take them seriously. If you lose against them, your game is over.
Because the roster of playable characters has been expanded, there is also a new sub-boss. His name is Bruce. He is a vicious Thai boxer with a mohawk. He is Lei's sub-boss, so start a game against the computer with Lei to see him. After your fighter defeats his sub-boss, he fights Kazuya. He was the star character of the original Tekken, so it's only fair that he remains in the sequel. If you defeat Kazuya, you are not finished. You have to go up against the Devil himself. Devil is a purple winged demon who bears a striking resemblance to Kazuya. He shoots unblockable laser beams from his forehead (these must be ducked) when he is standing and flying. When he flies, try to run behind him and perform a back throw when he lands.

Mokujin
Complete Arcade mode four times. Mokujin is a wooden man/woman who randomly adopts the fighting style and moves of other characters.

Anna
Complete Arcade mode five times.

Bryan
Complete Arcade mode six times.

Heihachi
Complete Arcade mode seven times.

Ogre
Complete Arcade mode eight times.

True Ogre
Complete Arcade mode nine times.

Panda
Highlight Kuma on the character select screen and press l or 5.

Tiger
Complete the game with all the main characters. Then highlight Eddy on the character select screen and press s.

Doctor B
Complete Tekken Force mode four times, then defeat Doctor Boskonovitch when he appears. You can then select him in Arcade mode. His secret underground cave stage will also be unlocked.

Gon
There are two ways of obtaining Gon. You can either complete Arcade mode using Doctor B, or you can defeat Gon in the secret Tekken Ball mode. To use Gon in Arcade mode, move the cursor either left or right off the character select screen.

Secret Costumes
Some of the fighters have a third costume, selected by pressing Start to choose them on the character select screen. However, to unlock secret costumes for each character, you have to play them a certain number of times in Arcade mode (without pausing and choosing 'Reset'). The quickest way is to set the timer to 20 seconds, battles to one round, and allow yourself to be defeated, then choose not to continue.

Xiaoyu
To see her in school uniform, you have to play her 50 times in Arcade mode.

Jin
To make him don rugby-style top and stripy trousers (school uniform?), play him 50 times in Arcade mode.

Anna
She gets her high-fashion white outfit, complete with hat, after you've played her 25 times in Arcade mode.

Gun Jack
To see him in his earlier 'Jack-2' form, you only have to play him 10 times in Arcade mode.
