Dr. Leib Landau, a descendant of the Noda B'Yehuda, was one of the defense attorneys in the Steiger Trial. Szlomo Stanislaw Steiger, a young Jewish university student, found himself accused of a crime he did not commit: the attempted assassination of the President of Poland. Leib Landau, the defense attorney on the case, was my grandfather's 2nd cousin.
Leib was born and raised in Przemysl, Poland as an Orthodox Jew. In 1939, Leib was on a mission to help Jews. His wife generously handed the keys to their country home to my grandparents and their 3 young children so that they would have a place to live in after having been thrown out of Germany because they were Polish Jews. In 1943, Dr. Leib Landau and his family were killed.
The following is the story a Jewish college student who escaped certain death with the help of G-d and a powerful team of six attorneys who had the awesome task to persuade the four judges who presided over the case that this man was innocent. The greatest problem though for the defense attorneys and Steiger was the anti-semitic sentiment that pervaded inside the courtroom.
