DR. NEIL ROSENSTEIN, THE NOTED GENEALOGIST AND FAMED AUTHOR
OF SEVERAL GENEALOGY BOOKS INCLUDING "THE UNBROKEN CHAIN"
HAS SENT IN THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BASED ON THE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH HE DID ON THE NODA B'YEHUDA'S MATERNAL ROOTS TO RABBI ABRAHAM YEHOSHUA HESCHEL THAT ULTIMATELY CONFIRMS AS WELL AS CLARIFIES THE FAMILY CONNECTION:

In an effort to make the earliest generations of the prominent levite Landau rabbinical family all trace back to R. Heschel of Cracow, one of the foremost scholars of his generation, numerous sources state that R. Zvi Hirsch Witush married a daughter of Eliezer of Dubno, son of R. Heschel. A detailed study shows that this is impossible and also incorrect. The question arises as to how this lineage exactly traced back.

R. Ezekiel Landau [died 1793], author of the Noda BiYehuda, was son of R. Judah Landau of Opatow, son of R. Zvi Hirsch Segal Landau, known as Hirsch Witush, after his mother. Despite the fact that descendants of Hirsch Witush claim ancestry back to R. Heschel of Cracow, not all are correct in this fact. It will be shown that Hirsch Witush was not a son-in-law of Eliezer of Dubno and thus only the line from R. Ezekiel Landau's mother can claim this as their ancestry!

In the genealogy of R. Israel Landau b. Judah of Sadigora, published in Shevet Yisrael by his son, R. Efraim of Bucharest [published in the 1930's] it states that R. Abraham Landau of Opatow, brother of R. Judah Landau [father of the Noda BiYehuda], was a descendant of R. Heschel of Cracow. Once again, this can be seen as an incorrect
attempt to link families back to a more illustrious ancestry!

R. Ezekiel Landau wrote an approbation to the Torat Netaneel, published in Furth in 1795, by R. Nathaniel Weil, A.B.D. Karlsruhe and author of the famed Korban Netaneel. Nethaniel's ancestry traced back to the Weil family, as did R. Landau's, through R. Heschel of Cracow. In this approbation, dated Sunday, 17th of the month of Nisan, 1784, R. Landau wrote, "the deceased R. Nethaniel Weil, light of this family whose stamp of the foot is unique on my mother's side." This primary source thus reveals that it was Landau's mother's ancestry that traced back and thus not his paternal line, which would have included Hirsch Witush.

R. Jacobke Landau [son of R. Ezekiel] wrote in Kontras Divri Yedidut at the beginning of his father's Responsa Noda BiYehuda, that his grandfather was Judah Landau and his grandmother [Chaya, wife of Judah Landau] was the daughter of R. Eleazar, A.B.D. Dubno. He further states, "also both of them were descendants of the great luminary of the exile, R. Heschel, A.B.D. Cracow, who until this day is called Our Master Rebbi Heschel." The problem from the text as to who exactly were the direct descendants is unclear. It could equally apply to Judah Landau and his wife, Chaya, or to Chaya and her father, Eleazar. However, the points raised above leave no doubt as to the correct version.

ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
R' ELEAZAR OF DUBNO and R' ABRAHAM YEHOSHUA HESCHEL:

The earliest source for the lineage of R. Eliezer, Av Beth Din Dubno can be found in Eisenstadt's Da'at Kedoshim, St. Petersburg, 1897-98. On page 97 R. Eliezer is listed as the son of R. Heschel of Cracow with the source being "a letter from R. J[oseph] Lewinstein." The latter rabbi was considered to be a renowned rabbinical and genealogical scholar and, as a consequence, scholars who came later repeatedly copied this source.

The fact is that Lewinstein obtained his erroneous information from Rosh HaMizbeach by R. Alexander Samuel b. Pinchas David Heilprin, Lemberg, 1882. In its introduction is written, "R. Saul, A.B.D. Przedborz, was the son-in-law of R. Eleazar, A.B.D. Dubno, son of R. Heschel of Cracow." One immediately notes that the name Eleazar in the earlier work was misrepresented as Eliezer. In fact by 1902 Lewinstein had corrected himself to read Eleazar (see below) or maybe the editor/publisher of Da'at Kedoshim had made the error that was to be so frequently perpetuated.

This Saul of Przedborz was the brother-in-law of R. Judah Segal Landau of Opatow [father of R. Ezekiel Landau, author of Noda BiYehuda, died 1793]. Their wives were sisters, daughters of R. Eleazar of Dubno. When R. Jacobke Landau [son of the Noda BiYehuda] wrote his will he left possessions to "the descendants of his great-grandfather, Eleazar, A.B.D. Rovno and Dubno." The top of the list included a grandson of Saul, R. Mordecai Bick ["son of the rabbi of Rovno"]

Thus we find this link quoted in Ohel Shlomo (p.41), Mofat HaDor, Toldot HaPoskim, Kontras Mateh Levi at the beginning of Ayn HaBedolach, Kontras Sharsheret Zahav at the beginning of Ziknei Machne Yehuda [1939], etc.

In a later scholarly journal, HaEshkol, volume 3, Cracow, 1902, p.188 et seq., R. Lewinstein of Serock wrote an article on Rabbi Reb Heschel of Cracow. Here, in the list of his children, Lewinstein makes no mention of a son Eliezer (or even Eleazar)! But the damage had already been done and perpetuated in his letter quoted in Da'at Kedoshim on 1897-98! Lewinstein by now (1902) corrected himself and in HaEshkol, mentions Eleazar (not Eliezer), A.B.D. Rovno and Dubno as a son of Issachar Berish and father of the rabbanit of Przedborz and of Chaya, wife of Judah Landau.

A beautiful handwritten manuscript by Lewinstein himself had survived unpublished. This document includes much genealogy and regarding R. Eleazar Lewinstein wrote in a footnote (#18), "In the introduction to the book Rosh HaMizbeach (Lvov, 1883) it is written that he was son of the gaon our master Heschel himself. And thus there the lineage of his son-in-law the gaon and av beth din of Przedborz - and this is an error!"

R. Efraim Zalman Lichtenstadt of Lublin, son of R. Joseph Landau (author of Tavnit Ot Yosef), wrote his genealogy prior to 1813 (the year of his death). This appeared in the Ma'a lot HaYochasin of R. Efraim Zalman Margolis of Brody (author of Mateh Efraim). Here too no mention is made of a son Eliezer.

Among the chief rabbis of Dubno was R. Eleazar, A.B.D. Rovno and later A.B.D. Dubno, son of R. Issachar Berish of Cracow, son of R. Heschel of Cracow. In the 1903 Jewish Encyclopedia, vol. V, p.6 he is listed as "Eleazar b. Issachar Baer of Cracow (1714-1719), maternal grandfather of Ezekiel Landau." Immediately following him as rabbi is listed "Heschel b. Eleazar (also called Heschel "der Kleiner"), died July 25, 1729."

A more recently published work on the life, family and works of R. Heschel, Chanukat HaTorah HeChadash, by Shimon Schlesser, Bnai Brak, 1996, p.35 correctly records the children of R. Heschel and that Eleazar was a grandson. Further, in 1989, R. Samuel David Movshovitz, Jerusalem, in Chidushei Rabeinu Jacob MiLublin veRabeinu Heschel miKrakow, footnotes on page 19 in the introduction (#24) the reference to Da'at Kedoshim, but does not record Eleazar as one of the sons.
