I HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: Rabbi Elimelech Rubinstein served as rabbi of Rachov (Annopol –Rachow, suburb of Yanov, Poland) from 1878 to 1923, authored many Sefarim (Pri Elimelech, Derushei Elimelech, etc.). Father: Nachman Rubinstein, rabbi of Rachov. Mother: Rivka Chana Leah, daughter of Yitzchak Zev Wolf (d. 1876), rabbi of Jozefow (50°38' / 21°26'). Wife: Chava Chaya, daughter of Chaim Baruch (d. 1885), rabbi of Leczna, (51°18 / 22°53', suburb of Lubartow).
I have just come across a 62 year-old newspaper article (from a microfilm archive) stating that my great-grandfather, Rabbi Elimelech HaCohen Rubinstein (b. Rachov, 1854 – d. Jerusalem, 1942) was a descendant of the Noda BiYehudah. Although I have been studying my family roots for many years, I have never heard this before and I was wondering if anyone out there has more information on this (exact lineage from the Noda BiYehudah to Rabbi Rubinstein).
Please email me at eli.delman@corp.idt.net or eli.delman@verizon.net

Dear Web site manager,
Hi, my name is Evan Landau and writing to inquire about my personal genealogy
in connection to the Goan Noda B'yehudav zt"l. In my Great Grandfather's, Ha
Rav Yechezke'l Landau of Rotterdam Holland zt"l, writing he claims to be a
scion of the Noda B'yehuda. My great grandfather was born in 1878 in Ksanov,
Galacia. His father was named Rav Aaron Landau zt"l. Unfortunately, this is all
the information that we have at present.

I was wondering if you had any information about this branch of the family and
could possibly help my family make this connection to our past. If you have
names or places we could look which would aid us in our search it would be much
appreciated. Thank You, Evan Landau.

Regarding: Rabbi Yakov Landau z"l, Av Beit Din, B'nei Brak,

Shalom, I wanted to put the information on the Notebook page but it was not working.
Rabbi Yakov Landau Z"L, Av Beit Din, B'nei Brak, a former Rabbi of Kurenets wrote a chapter in the Kurenets Yizkor book. You could find it at;
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kurenets/kur020.html

In regards to his lineage he wrote:

The spiritual leaders of the town, formulators of the spiritual character.

In all the different aspects of life, you can see the distinct influence of the town's leaders. First and foremost, the pious brilliant, filled with knowledge and intelligence, Rav Avraham Meshulam; Zalman Landau from the lineage of the most prominent Rabbi of Israel, the Gaon Yehezkel Landau (author of the Noda Beyudah), and from the lineage of the“Hacham Zvi” who originally came from Brody. Long ago, there lived in Kurenets a wealthy man by the name of Itzha Raha's. Rav Zalman married his daughter when he was very young. Already at that point he was well known as a most amazing genius and even the most well-known, learned men would make testament that he was able to dispute and debate with the best scientists even in their own fields of expertise.

When he heard of the well-known Hassidic Rebbe, author of the Tanya and Shulhan Arukh Harav (The Alter Rebbe founder of the Chabad dynasty also known as Admor Hazaken Shneur Zalman of Liadi 1746-1812) he was very drawn to him, so secretly he left together with his brother-in-law Leib, the father of Zalman Roshka's, to visit this Rebbe, and in spite of the fact that his mother-in-law chased after them to bring them back, they succeeded in reaching their destination. On their return, Reb Zalman established the On their return, Reb Zalman established the “minyan synagogue” that was named the Rabbi's Minyan, the same place that was destroyed by the Nazis, may their names be erased from memory. The first building that was put up in this location was destroyed by fire and my father rebuilt it. When that building caught fire again in 1925, my deceased brother Rabbi Shmuel Hillel of blessed memory rebuilt it.

Zalman was amongst the main Hasidim of the “Admor Hazaken” and for that reason, his sons and grandsons had tremendous influence on the image of Jewish Kurenets which eventually became an overwhelmingly Chabad (Lubavitch) shtetl. Of the five synagogues in Kurenets, in four they prayed in the style of Ha'ari and only in the Beit Midrash did they continue in the Ashkenazi style. The pious Gaon, Reb Zalman Landau had two sons and one daughter. One was Reb Tzvi Hirsch, who was nicknamed Reb Hirscheleh Reb Zalman's. He was a merchant and had business connections with Konigsberg and would travel there often . He was splendid in piety and purity. In Kurenets they often repeated a passage first spoken by him, “A Jew can swap a calf for a young horse and live off the profit a whole week..” He once said to my father, of blessed memory, that in his opinion, one must donate ten percent to charity of money that one loses as well as from money that one earns.

His sons were the pious Rabbi, Reb Avraham Landau, who was the father of Leah Sherl. When he lived in Kurenets he worked as a businessman, but later on he became Rabbi in the town of Zabin, and he was related to the Tzemach Tzedek[6]. His son in law, Reb Yakov, who was nicknamed Yakov Leah Sherl's, was a pious and learned Jew. The second son of Reb Hirsheleh was Rabbi Dan, who was the husband of the granddaughter of Tzemach Tzedek. The second son of Rabbi Zalman Landau was the adored Rabbi of our town, the genius, pious and renowned all over, Reb Mordechai Ziskind Zal, known by everyone as Reb Zishka. All the people of the town and surrounding area saw him as a most amazing man, and his name and his memory are held in deep respect. He was extremely pious towards God and very respectful to all people. Reb Zishka was a Hasid in the court of the Tzemach Tzedek, and was greatly loved by him, both on account of his father, the genius pious Zalman, but also for his own personality.

As a Rabbi in our town, Reb Zishka was active until the year 1884. He didn't have any sons, only two daughters. One was Leah Margalit, the other was Cherna. He married his daughter Leah Margalit to my father, the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Leib Zal. He took his place
He took his place as a Rabbi in Kurenets after he died. His daughter Cherna lived in Vilna. Rabbi Zishka passed away on Shabbat, the fourteenth of Sivan, 1884. They tell that before he passed away he got up and walked to the window and looked outside and said, “Ah sheina walt. Ah sheina walt A wonderful world.” Although he sat in his chair and didn't lie down, at certain points he felt that he was on the verge of death and a few times asked if the doctor Yehoshua Kremer was still present, since he was very worried that his soul would depart while there was still a Cohen in the house (Cohanim-Priests are not allowed to be in the presence of dead people). During the day when people asked him questions he said, “You must ask my son-in-law those questions because on the day of my death I cannot give answers anymore.” The manifest of the rabbinical transfer that was given to my father after he passed away started in those words…

I HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: I am trying to construct my family tree links with the Noda B'Yehuda. My great grand father was Joseph Landau who I estimate must have been born around 1850. He and his children emigrated to Llanelli, Wales in the late 1800's.
Any information on family links would be gratefully appreciated.
I WISH TO BE CONTACTED REGARDING: My late father, Rabbi Mordechai (Maurice) Landy and the rest of the family all claim descent from the Noda B' Yehuda but do not have a full family tree.

REGARDING: Rappaport genealogy

On your very informative website you ask to hear from anyone with information regarding the Rappaport family related to Rabbi Chaim HaKohen Rappaport of Lwow. In the course of researching a likely relative of mine, Rabbi David HaKohen Kalter of Stary Sambor, I found the following:

Rabbi Yosef HaKohen Rapoport of Stary Sambor corresponded with the Divrei
Chaim in 1851, and was then Rosh Beit Din. In Divrei Chaim, he is called
a relative (of the Divrei Chaim).

I cannot read Hebrew myself, so I am relying on a translation for this
information. I do not yet know what Rabbi Wunder's Meorei Galicia says
about this Rabbi Yosef Rapoport.

I am trying to determine if he was related to Rabbi David HaKohen Kalter,
who was Dayan and Moreh Tzedek in Stary Sambor for 70 years, and was
active at least from 1857-1886. Perhaps David Kalter succeeded Yosef
Rapoport? There are also connections between Kalters and descendants of
the Divrei Chaim (one of the Sanz-Klausenberger Rebbe's great-grandmothers
was a Kalter, for example). Therefore, I wonder if the relationship
between the Divrei Chaim and Rabbi Yosef Rapoport might involve Rabbi
David Kalter.

Whether he is related to Rabbi Chaim of Lwow, I do not know, but perhaps
the connection to the Divrei Chaim may be of some help to you.

Best regards, Logan Kleinwaks

hello, I am trying to trace my family. When I entered my name, Luria in Google I got your page. I know that my family was in Spain and had a coat of arms, they left by choice rather than convert during the inquisition. They went to Portugal it is thought, and then to Ireland. The name Luria changed to Lurie/ Luri/ Lury then to O'Leary and in the US to Leary.

I see on your site that you link the family name Luria to David HaMelech... I had been told a family tale that we are descendants of King David, but until now I never saw any link between the name Luria and David. Is this truly established? I assume that like all lines they trace back to an original source, somewhere someone was the first Luria. ??? Thanks for any assistance... Toda. Chana Luria

Dear Libby Warren: I was just on your site. My information is scant at best. I found out maybe in the last 15 years that my family was related to the Noda B'Yehuda. My grandfather on my mother's side, who I never met, was named Meyer Elisha Landau. He came to this country from Poland/Austria in the early 1900's (teens) and lived first on the lower east side of New York and then in Williamsburg. He was married to Shprintze Dina Klang with whom he had four children, one of whom is my mother, Goldie Landau (others are/were Izzy,Chaim, Sammy). Maybe 25 years ago or more a relative popped up that no one had ever known. His name was Alex Landau. He was the son of one of my grandfather's brothers. I was away in college at the time and met him only a couple of times at weddings or bar mitzvah's before I was wise enough to ask him tons of questions. Anyway, it was he who told us we were related to the Noda b'yehuda. I believe Alex had lived somewhere in Canada then maybe moved to NY and somewhere looked up my uncle Izzy (Alex's yiddish name was Shmielikel) At some point Alex and his wife moved to Los Angeles and I have lost track of him, and wonder if he is still alive.

Anyway, that is almost all I know. Pretty sketchy it's true, but I am motivated at this time to figure out geneologies and this is where I am beginning.

I am sure you have never heard of Meir Elisha Landau, especially since I can't tell you any other information about his family. But if you do have any information, or advice or comment I would so much love to hear from you.

Thanks for doing this website! May we all meet in Yerushalayim soon, where all our Yichus's will be revealed. With wishes for an upcoming Chag Sameach,
Sincerely, Jody Rosenblatt Feld
