The NJ Scholastic Rowing Championship was started in 1990 by Andrew Salisbury And Steve Brown. The first regatta offered 14 races with 13 schools participating. The regatta has expanded to 34 events and approximently 60 schools participate. It is the largest scholastic athletic event in the State of New Jersey. The regatta is run on the last weekend in April. The NJ Scholastic Rowing Championship will be celebrating it's 12th annual regatta this year.
The New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Association hosts the regatta along with the Viking Boat Club from Ventnor, New Jersey who provide the volunteers to run the event. The NJ Scholastic Rowing Association was host to the Scholastic National Championships in 1996.
The regatta was formed so that New Jersey and Pennsylvania public and private schools that are members of the PSRA would have a place to race on the same weekend that the Catholic League Championships are held in Philadelphia. The regattas popularity has reached schools from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, DC. The regatta has tripled in size in less than 10 years.
The Nj Scholastic Rowing association will be sponsoring two additional regattas in 2002 on the Cooper River along with the Championship race.
The regatta hosts Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Novice events. Eights and fours in the sweep category and quads, doubles and singles in the sculling.
The regatta invites guest each year to present awards to the athletes and share experiences. Some of the regattas guest have over the years have been Jennifer Dore and Monica Trannel from the Women's National Team, Jeff Klepacki, Bryan Volpenhein, Ethan Ayer, Nick Anderson, Sean Hall, Mike Wherley, Jon Brown, John Cashman from the Men's National Team, Barb Kirch, former Olympian, Head Coach at the University of Pennsylvania and former Head Coach of the Junior Women's National Team and Stan Bergman, Head Coach from the University of Pennsylvania and Lori Dauphiny Head Coach at Princeton University and National Team Coach.
