201
Since it has been discovered
that I am not wise,
no one comes to me
anymore for advice.
Perhaps, drinking too much
has affected my brain,
I cannot any longer
tell Virtue from Vice.

202
How beautiful and
how fresh is my lass!
Like the purple of dawn,
like the green of the grass!
Let's forget your troubles,
relax and be happy!
Stop repeating forever
a mournful "Alas!"

203
Don't suffer because
life seems so unjust.
Stop lamenting the fact
that we'll turn into dust.
Into an empty heart
pour red wine of passion.
Give yourself unreservedly
to Love and Lust!

204
Some seem lucky to get
all the World can give.
Others are battered by
Fate without reprieve.
Don't mourn if you are
often not, as some, happy.
Celebrate being spared
others' pain and grief.

205
Rise and shine with the sun,
the new dawn embrace.
For a moment forget
the grief of your days.
Breathe, with pleasure, fresh air,
thank God you're still living.
Let the soft morning wind
caress gently your face.

206
Do not listen to God,
answer the tavern's call,
Drink and smash your fortune
against the wall.
To fight fate endlessly
must be man's greatest folly,
One has a better chance
in a drunken brawl.

207
My commandments are few:
eat, drink, make love, and laugh!
With a good man be soft,
with a scoundrel - rough!
I asked Fate: "Tell me honestly,
what is my ransom?"
"Your heart", she replied,
"is a ransom enough!"

208
I wish only a bottomless jug
could be made.
I wish wine could fall
from it like a cascade.
Drinking ought to replace
everything for me now,
Since I have been by friends,
and by my love betrayed.

209
The grass glistens, the rose
is stroked by zephyr,
yet, beneath all this splendor
is lurking deep fear.
For before our eyes
have their fill of such beauty,
the green grass will be cut,
the red rose - disappear.

210
I am a cup that wants
to be filled to the brim,
I shall drink all day long,
till my eyesight gets dim.
Bring more wine... Some more,
for this world is sleeping,
for this life's like a night,
and we are but a dream.

211
The eternal sky is
overturned above us,
like a huge wine cup,
made of green and blue glass.
Drink as much as you can
from this cup and remember -
Life is short, seize the day,
at the end all shall pass.

212
When a warm wind lifts up
the red skirt of a rose,
it is time to write poetry
instead of prose.
It is time to share wine
with the one you love,
it is time to dream dreams,
it is time to repose.

213
Raise the first glass to the
rising sun in the East.
Stop decrying thy fate's
every turn, every twist.
If love, justice and truth
had been ruling this world,
At Life's table you would
never have been the least.

214
Separated from wine,
abandoned I feel.
Life without Love makes
me exceedingly ill.
After searching for the truth
that's what I have found -
Love and wine is all,
everything else is nil!

215
My beloved, let me
fill once more your glass!
Let's pretend, for a moment,
the world is us!
In the vast Universe
we shall float forever!
Our love thru eternity
none shall surpass!

216
My name will disappear
from this earth, yours too;
To seek comfort in wine
is all we can do.
But before our bodies
are broken down,
let me find my solace
in embracing you.

217
Do what every good drunk
in your place would have done.
Call musicians, recline
on a soft divan.
With a jug in one hand,
with a cup in the other,
don't wag your tongue,
drink nonstop and have fun.

218
Rather than trying to
set the world ablaze,
Rather than craving for
every scoundrel's praise,
Rather than chasing a
fleeting fame till the last day,
It is better to spend
life in a drunken haze.

219
Gone forever, like wind
in the steppe, one more day,
like the river that can
flow only one way.
Let us live, my beloved,
right here, in the present,
What has happened before
do not try to replay.

220
By the morning breeze greeted
the red poppies nod.
Amongst them the young houris
are running unshod.
Bring me wine at once.
What's the point in praying?
They, who start day with drinking,
do thus honor God.

221
Don't hold a grudge ever
against your friends.
No matter whose fault it is,
make the amends.
Share with them all you have,
it is life's greatest pleasure.
Naked came, naked leave,
when one day all this ends.

222
Cruel Heaven, is that
what is called a just deed?
You've killed proud Mahmud,
murdered mighty Jamshyd.
Don't tell us a lie
that one day shall be risen
from the earth zillions
who are buried in it.

223
"What about the world
beyond this one, my friend?"
I asked an old man, nursing
a glass in his hand.
"Drink!" he said. "It's a long,
long way to the hereafter.
None who ever went there
came back from the dead's land.

224
How great, for someone
I can trust, is my need.
How lonely I feel
in this crowd, indeed.
Every pitiful fool,
every ignorant lout,
after drinking too much,
believes he is Jamshyd.

225
Such a beautiful day,
not too hot, not too cold.
The fresh grass of the fields
is a sight to behold.
"In the morning, when the
early bird begins singing,
it is time to start drinking, Khayyam,"
I am told.

226
Darkness has vanished, chased
away by the moonlight.
Bring a wine jug quickly -
let us drink all night.
After we disappear
from this sublunar world,
the moon still will be shining
on it, fresh and bright.

227
Only drinking too much
with my friends make me glad,
even if I walk after
like a quadruped.
What a pity that so much time
has been wasted
being sober and safe,
being lonely and sad.

228
Let's drink wine, for the
earthly goodness it has!
Let's hear music-the sweetness
of Heaven it has!
Let's trade sadness eternal
for joy everlasting!
What's the meaning of Life
if not man's happiness?

229
In pursuit of delight
let your passions lead you,
let your heart have a last word
whatever you do.
We are born to be free,
so, let's break the chains
of each petty restrictions
and silly taboo.

230
While being alive,
I shall take pleasure in
woman's delicate face,
and the grass lush and green.
But the greatest delight
I have found in drinking,
for without good wine
life isn't worth a bean.

231
From the false bookish wisdom
to the wide fields fly.
There on the lush green grass
with a sweet maiden lie.
And before cruel Death
has dried up your bones
toss caution to the winds,
drink the well of Life dry!
.
232
Come with me, don't worry
about the past.
Let's enjoy every day
as if it was the last.
Very soon, following
those who just have left us,
say good-by to all things
Life can offer we must.

233
Changing times, changing fortunes
do not contemplate.
Let good wine and love
make you inebriate.
Heaven couldn't care less
whether you are submissive.
To submit to a beauty
is a better fate.

234
They who lived before us
in this grief-stricken land,
whether foolish or wise,
had been turned into sand.
Bring more wine and listen
to what Khayyam saying -
human wisdom's like water,
insipid and bland.

235
What's the difference:
one or a thousand deaths?
Seven planets to the
living are merciless.
To the living the four
elements are unsparing.
A jug of wine is
their only redress.

236
Ruthless fate has destroyed
all that has been hoped for.
Time has come when one must
face God or Lucifer.
Yet do not rush, lie still
on this grass for a while.
Lying under it, soon
you won't rush anymore.

237
Drink, for wine prolongs
life past the prescribed span,
sheds eternal light on
souls of mortal men.
Dressing the earth in bloom,
turning grapes into wine,
God tells us to be happy,
as much as we can.

238
I was told - Paradise
is the true Promised Land.
Only there all good things
never come to an end.
Bring me wine and bread,
one can't live on a promise,
To a pie in the sky
I prefer cash in hand.

239
Clouds cannot put out
the blaze of the Sun.
Joy and Happiness by
Sadness won't be undone.
Oh, Khayyam! Don't rush
toward what is unknown.
Slow down, drink wine,
make love and have fun.

240
Fill with fire my cup,
let this world be burned,
I am tired of being
rejected and scorned.
Bring me a flaming jug
to quench fire with fire,
before into a jug
I am also turned.

241
To fill my heart and cup
I shall need a fakir.
For too long they have been
craving life's elixir.
Friends and wine are gone,
here I am, all alone,
my heart's terribly empty,
my head's achingly clear.

242
Tie one on, only drinking
is good in excess.
Nothing brings Man to God
faster than drunkenness.
Pour more wine - without it
life is a mess.
What's the use being sober
when waiting for death.

243
Never fail, Khayyam,
each new-born day to greet,
like a cup, with the new
expectations fill it.
Just remember: this day
which is already waning
You won't be ever able
again to repeat.

244
Proud men even God's will
would often defy.
Humble ones always
on His mercy rely.
But the truth, that of dust
made this life-carrying vessel
turns to dust, after all,
no one can deny.

245
Wine cures right away
malady of the heart.
Wine turns a dull man
into one quick and smart.
The miraculous potion
of consolation,
drinking wine is the
greatest medical art.

246
If your life is a trap,
break loose quickly and run.
What is left of it
spend lying under the sun.
With a sweetheart's embraces
to sooth the old pain,
and with wine to slip
into oblivion.

247
Stop lamenting and mourning
your losses, my friends.
Stop bewailing and grieving
that life slips your hands.
Drink good wine, indulge
in all kinds of pleasure.
Partake of happiness
before everything ends.

248
What a beautiful morning!
Let us finish all
that was left from the last
night in the drinking bowl.
Let the charm of this morning
flood over your senses,
for one day you'll be a
senseless brick in a wall.

249
Year around the planets
must circle the Sun.
In Life's book all its pages
must turn everyone.
Grief is poison, wine -
a cure, taken daily
shall turn into a sage
even a simpleton.

250
At the merciless Heaven
it's useless to rave.
It is useless to cry
on your dear friend's grave.
Try to live in the present,
enjoy its each moment.
Of the past or the future
do not be a slave.
