The Prophet of the New

And when the multitude of the curious and the credulous approached the Prophet of the New they asked him:
"Tell us, oh the Enlightened and Forward looking One, what is Modernism?"
And without a slightest hesitation and in a tone of deep conviction he replied:
"Modernism is like this. You walk on your two feet all your life and eventually find it quite boring and pedestrian, if you forgive me this little pun. So, one day you decide to try to walk on your hands instead."
"But isn't it very inconvenient, isn't it very difficult?" someone interrupted, bravely disregarding the hissing and the angry side glances of the respectful multitude. "And how many can do it?"
"I am glad you asked this question," said the Teacher, "For this precisely the point. Inconvenient, difficult, out of the ordinary - that's what one has to be attracted to, that's what one has to strive for, if one doesn't want to be a boring slob, but an exceptional and exciting individual."
Yet, the disrespectful doubter persisted:
"You also can't see too much walking on your hands. Just a small patch of the ground on front of your nose, and the little you manage to see is all up-side down, while before standing on your feet you could see the whole world clearly and without any efforts."
The Guru to the delight of the multitude seemed to be expecting this insolent question too.
"This is another point," pronounced he. "What you call up-side down is the true reality. It is you who were up-side down all your life. And besides, anything you can see around is insignificant. The world, the people, the animals, the trees, the flowers, etc., etc., etc., the whole reality - it is all utterly meaningless. It is what is in front of your nose and inside your own head which is really important. For in your head you can imagine and create anything you want, the things you could never see around because they do not exist in this miserable, stingy reality."
The listeners were seemingly overwhelmed, even frightened, by such a bold, such an extraordinary idea.
"Now", continued the Teacher, "I understand the difficulties of walking on your hands right away, after the lifelong habit of using feet. So, start by crawling on your all fours, like the toddlers do. Become a child again, clean your head of all the knowledge accumulated during lifetime, become simple, even primitive. And then create out of nothingness, out of emptiness in your head. And by doing it you become a modernist yourself."
"Wa-ooh", exhaled the enraptured crowd of the curious and the bewildered. "How deep and how simple", said one. "How exiting", said another.
"We all can be modernist", exclaimed the third.
"And you all will", triumphantly declared the Prophet of the New. "Because what I'm offering you anyone is capable of doing. The ignorant as well as knowledgeable, the talentless as well as talented. The one that just started to-day as well as one who were doing it for years. Imagine the explosion of creativity, imagine the masses who thought of themselves as nobodies and suddenly realized that they are as good as anybody else. This is a dawn of the New Era, the Age of total creative equality. And it's all yours for the taking!"
The multitude of the excited and the grateful rose as one. The tremendous uproar burst the air. People were shouting with joy, "Long live the Teacher! We love you! Thank you! Lead us into the Future!" Some were crying, some laughing. Everybody was screaming. The noise was deafening.
The Prophet of the New sat silent. He was pleased.
