!!!THE WINNING ANSWER!!!
This was turned in by "Fluffy"
St. patrick was a missionary to Ireland way back when. Though he had
been
enslaved and tortured by the Irish, he still showed them the catholic
way of
life, one to which they hold still today. The catholic church
cannonized
him and so he became St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. The
tradition
for the holiday (As with most saints is to takje the day off and
celebrate
with parties and feasts) When the masses of Irish imigrants came to
the US
in the late 1800's and early 1900's, they brought their patron saint
with
them. As the Irish had bad water, and, since they had little to do
with a
short growing season, they naturally drank large amounts of liquer. So
the
non-Irish thought that the holiday was just for having fun (And getting
drunk!).
So thats the origins of St. Patricks day, and the American version.
So there,
Fluffy
