 Yaten is a member of not only the hit Pop group, the Three Lights, but he is also a member of the Sailor Starlights (as the Sailor Senshi, Sailor Star Healer). Unlike most characters (namely the Senshi) in the entire SailorMoon series, Yaten (along with his brothers, Kou Seiya and Kou Taiki) has nothing to do with the Silver Milenium, or the Moon Kingdom! He belongs to a different galaxy and empire in our Universe. And his home planet was Kinmokusei. Back on Kinmokusei, Yaten was known as Sailor Star Healer. He (along with brothers Sailor Star Fighter and Sailor Star Maker ) did his very best to protect their planet of Kinmokusei, but they were no match for Sailor Galaxia and her Sailor Animates (or Anima Mates). Once he and his brothers discovered that their Princess (Princess Kakyuu/Princess Fireball) was missing (after Galaxia's attack), Sailor Star Healer traveled to earth in search of her (and the "cure" to the defeat of Sailor Galaxia). Once he reaches Earth, Sailor Star Healer changes his identity to Kou Yaten. Yaten is a transfer student to Serena's (Usagi's) high school and keyboardist, vocalist, and "manager" for he and his brothers' music group, the Three Lights. Yaten can be found (at times) conferencing with high-ranking officials in the entertainment business about commercials, tv shows, and musicals. As Yaten, he is obnoxious, self-centered, and has a "comment" towards anything anyone says (and you thought Raye/Rei was bad? ^_^). He seems to have a quick temper, large ego, and in a grouchy mood. The only 2 people who could sufficiently calm him down (besides Taiki and Seiya) were Mina/Minako and Luna (for whom e had a special 'love' for). He hates the fact that Seiya and Serena have a strong friendship (since Yaten thinks that their "mission" to find Kakyuu is more important). (*Eventually, Yaten does become friends with Serena and the others).
Yaten (or Sailor Star Healer) is a very focused and dedicated person. The only real time he feels like giving up hope and not fight Galaxia is when he finds out that Princess Kakyu is dead (after protecting him and the other Starlights from Sailor Galaxia's attacks). It is only when Sailor chibiChibi reminds Sailor Star Healer that the Inner Senshi sacrificed their own lives to save the Starlights (earlier) that he finds the strength to fight on and save the Star Seeds from the clutches of the evil Galaxia.

*In the new dub of the SM Sailor Stars season (beginning July 27, 2001 on Toonami), Yaten will now be known as "Jessica Lights"! Not only that, but Yaten will become a permenent FEMALE!!!
