MCSE Study Guide
Installing, Configuring and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Exam 70-215
Lisa Donald with James Chellis
Beginning:
This is the second test study guide ready for your Microsoft Certified System Engineer Exam. This book consists of many reviews from Windows 2000 Professional Administering and Installing. This book does not contain a lot of Remote Install but a lot of Disk Management and Group Policies.
Windows 2000 Server Requires:
CD-ROM: Only when No network
CPU: Pentium 133 recommends Pentium II or higher
Display: VGA recommends SVGA
Hard disk space 1GB recommends 2GB or higher
Keyboard/Mouse: required
Memory: 128MB Recommend 256MB or higher
Networking: NIC
Again if you had any sense at all you would go with NTFS format but FAT is still available. All hardware should appear on the Windows 2000 hardware Compatibility list so that Installation will go smoothly
Again there are two ways of stalling CD-ROM or Network but each has an option of an unattended installation with the use of RIS or Sysprep or Setup Manager. Again using logic you can only upgrade from Windows 2000 Server or Enterprise Edition. Otherwise a clean install is preferred.
There are many things that are new with Windows 2000 Server but must be made as a Domain Controller first. Using dcpromo on the run line. This will setup your Active Directory, give you DHCP and DNS as well as full support for Remote and WINs one new thing that is really cool is the Distributed File System or known as DFS which is a single, logical, hierarchical file system. It organizes shared folders on different computers in a network to provide a logical tree structure of for the file system resources.
Again they recommend you to troubleshoot hardware problems with Device manager and yes Windows 2000 Server is PnP.
Middle:
With Windows 2000 server there is 5 volume types:
Mirrored Volume: This type of volume consists of two identical copies of a simple volume but must require 2 physical Hardrives. Mirrored volumes create a fault-tolerance or parity incase of one hardisk failure. Dynamic
RAID-5 Volume: A RAID-5 is a fault-tolerant striped volume. This type of Volume offers the best performance yet with fault-tolerance. But the cost to this is that it takes the storage of one Hardrive. RAID-5 volumes must require a minimum of 3 hardrives. Dynamic
Simple volume: This is the simplest volume and requires only one single disk
Spanned Volume Contains space form multiple disks. This does not improve performance but it can do a great difference if you have a lot of small storage hardrives. Dynamic
Striped Set: This is also known as RAID level 1 because it is the same as RAID-5 except that it does not offer fault tolerance and only requires two disks. This will provide one of the fastest performers if you are not concerned about Hardrive failures
Again Windows 2000 uses one of many protocols for networking. For example TCP/IP, Apple Talk, NetBEUI or Net BIOS, NWLink (IPX/SPX for connecting with Novell) and also services for Unix 2.0 to mainly print to Unix Servers.
Windows 2000 bring forth a new power to bring your clients IP addresses dynamically with DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which the clients will request, an IP address and the DHCP server will lease the number for a certain amount of time. This is one of the best ways of configuring your network unless you want to be able to do it statically.
Again Server brings the security of EFS (Encrypting File System) and also Group policies, which is set in Active Directory using Gpedit.msc. This as well can do auditing.
Conclusion:
I love Sybex and I always will because of their leading ways of teaching. This again prepares me for Server, which I will take for the credit of my MCSE. The author came out clearly and dynamically. The infrastructure of the book is based on the key ideas that you will need to be able to past the test. I have enjoyed it and hopefully next I will be moving on to Directory Services Administration. Thank you. |
