| At $1000 or more for a camera, digital video is still a sizable investment, compared to a $400 analog camcorder. But compared to film, it's an incredible bargain. Even a low-budget feature film involves hundreds of thousands of dollars in film stock, equipment, and editing fees. No wonder filmmakers around the world are praising digital video's democratizing power; a group Danish directors even penned a manifesto for a new standard of filmaking, inspired by the simplicity of digital video. Your child's soccer practice may not be the stuff hit movies are made of, but with a DV camera and editing software for your home PC, you can play at film auteur. The high resolution of digital video--nearly double that of analog-- and its CD-quality sound make for an excellent product to send to family members or screen at the local film festival. DV camers are generally quite small and lightweight, and most record on tiny, specially formatted miniDV tapes that can be used over and over. Sony's newest mode the DCR-PC100 DV Handycam, makes use of the company's versatile Memory Stick Storage media. DV cameras have many more features than their analog counterparts, such as in-camera editing, available on the Canon Ultura, and numerous special effects, should you want to give your wedding coverage on MTV feel or render your trip to the Alamo in sepia tones. Most DV cameras can take still photos as well--with 1152 X864 pixel resolution, Sony's Handycam is comparable to most midrange still cameras. Image stabilizers, to comensate for handheld shakiness, and the option to shoot in darkness are also available. Where the fun really starts is in the editing process. You'll need an IEEE 1394 (known by the brand names FireWire and i.LINK) jack on your PC for transferring video directly from your DV camera and because one hour of full-motion video takes up to 13GB, you'll also need a very large hard drive. If you don't have these Pinanacle System's Studio DV package provides a FireWire adapter card and editing software that captures a light-weight working copy of the video, then renders the final product at full resolution. With Studio DV and other inexpensive programs from Avid, Adobe, and Apple, editing is as easy as cutting and pasting. Users simply mark start and end points of scenes, then drag the selected pieces onto a storyboard, placing them in any order. Scene transitions like fades and wipes can then be added, as can voiceovers, titles, and sound tracks, whether from you own CDs, or from music includes in the software. Avid and Pinnacle are leading names in the video industry, and in terms of features, their consumer products are remarkably similar to what you'd find in a professional editing booth. In fact, these tools are so powerful that you may be dazzled at first by all the options.
