Could the Volpino be the dog for you? Read on to find out!

Appeal: They are happy, affectionate, and lively companions. They are active, intelligent, and intensley loyal.

Roots: This breed of dog descende from the European Spitz, who inhabited Italy during the Bronze age. Both nobility and commoners treasured this breed, and it was often depicted in paintings as companions to shopkeepers.

Numbers: When World War Two ended, Volpino breeding decreased and the Ente Nazionale Della Cinofilia Italiana (Italy's Kennel Club) registered the last five dogs. The breed was almost gone, until ENCI launched a project for historic Italian Breeds. Dogs were selected to revive the breed, but it is still very rare.

Personality: playful, territorial, energetic

Ring Action: Volpinos compete in Italy, but you are unlikely to see a Volpino in a US dog Show

Life Span: 14 to 16 years

Height: Males are 10 1/2 to 12 inches, and females are 10 to 11 inches

Weight: 10 lbs. or less

Color: White, red, champagne

Coat: Long and bushy

Best home: an affectionate family in need of a fun lap/watch dog

Idea of fun: riding in the car

Clubs: ENCI

The Volpino is a great dog. There are no noted health problems! Would you believe taht the red volpino was almost considered extinct because it was so rare!
