Are you interested in the Sea Turtle? Well this is the place to be for folks who are. Below is a list of recent facts about the sea turtle! Enjoy!
Did You Know....
- There are seven different species of Sea Turtle.
- Five of the species (hawksbill, loggerhead, green, Kemp's ridley, and leatherbacks) frequent US coastal waters.
- All of the species mentioned above are listed as either endangered or threatened.
- Turtles are at least 200 million years old.
- Sea turtles are threatened by pollution, marine debris, hebitatloss to coastal development, and fishing related problems.
- A turtle's shell has two parts, the carapace (dome shaped part on top), and the plastron (the flat or concave section beneath). These peices are adjoined by a ligament piece.
- The scutes (horny plates covering the shell) are colored to form patterns.
- A sea turtle's spine and ribs are connected to its shell, making it unflexible.
- Turtles lack teeth, but their strong jaws make up for it by breaking their food.
- By flapping its front flippers like wings, and using the hind flippers as a rudder, the turtles can swim gracefully.
- Sea turtles vary in size, from the dinner plate sized Kemp's ridley to the huge leatherback.
-Most species of sea turtles eat a variety of fish and plants.
-Turtle eggs resemble leathery ping pong balls.
-A female turtle can lay one hundred eggs, or more!
-Hatchlings will emerge from their eggs about sixty or seventy days after they have been laid.
I got the information on sea turtles from Watermarks magazine, from the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
