Appeal: They combine the Terrier spirit and intelligence with sensitivity and humor
Roots: Captain John Owen Edwards of Wales needed a dog to roust otters and other small game form his country mansion, known as Sealyham. He crossbred Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Wire Fox Terriers, Cheshire Terriers, and Dandie Dinmont Terriers. The prouduct of his breeding became known as the Sealyham Terrier.
Numbers: The last time AKC registrations were counted, the Sealyham Terrier ranked 139th of the 146 breeds.
Personality: Bright, fun loving, a joy to train; they get along well with children, adults, and other pets. They also display a dedication to their owner.
Ring Action: At Westminster Kennel Club Shows, there have been four Best in Show Titles Awarded to the Sealyham Terrier.
Life Span: 12 to 14 years
Height: About 10 1/2 inches at withers
Weight: Up to 24 pounds for males, even less for females
Color: solid white- although dark markings on the face and ears are acceptable
Coat: soft undercoat with a wiry top coat (Regular grooming is required to prevent matting.)
Health Problems: Occaisional deafness, low incidences of epilepsy and retinal displasia
Best Home: Suburban home with a fenced in yard
Idea of Fun: Digging for varmints, socializing with other dogs
Perfect Match: Retired couple in need of exercise, or a familiy with small children
