The Pony of the Americas (POA for short), was the first pony breed to be developed in the US. Leslie Boomhower, from Iowa, developed this type in the 1950's by crossing a Shetland stallion and an Appaloosa Mare. This breed's popularity has grown quickly, since it already has its own breed book, and clubs across the US. This type of pony has long strides and free action, proving to be an excellent mount for young riders. They are ideal for trail rides, showing, jumping and racing.
