The Greyhound is a breed that should never become extinct. With its wisdom, swiftness, and elegance, this dog has the strenghth and stamina to tolerate the worst. The first knowledge of this dog comes from Ancient Egypt, where the dog was used in hunting. Egyptian scenes depict the dog attacking a deer and a horned animal, in three separate scenes.
The Greyhound came to America in the early 1500's by Spanish explorers. Their purpose was to gaurd the Spaniards and to intimidate the Indians. They were among the earliest in AKC dog shows too. Eighteen Greyhounds were listed in the 1877 Westminster Kennel Club show! This breed was the second addition to the stud book in 1885.
When O.P. Smith invented the mechanical lure in 1912, another interest was made in the breed, rading. Track racing was first introduced for Greyhounds in the 1920's, and it still continues today, bringing a more popular look on the breed. After the dog's racing career though, its life is over. If you are looking for a nice, family oriented dog, adopt a Greyhound from a shelter. This will be saving its life. Although many Greyhounds are put in shelters each day, the rest are killed, becuase they are considered useless, but they are not! A Greyhound makes a great companion (I know because I've had one). Adopt a Greyhound, and save a life. You can help prevent this breed from becoming extinct. |
