Did you Know...
The gorilla is the largest and most powerful of all living primates.
It is a peaceful and sociable animal.
Gorillas live in the wild only in the Zaire River basin of Africa.
There are 2 species- mountain and lowland.
These species are separated by about 600 miles.
Both species of gorilla are now recognised as being ENDANGERED!
When a gorilla drinks (rarely) it soaks the back of its hand and sucks the water from the fur.
As he matures, a male gorilla's skull develops a bony ridge that will make his head dome shaped.
Social grooming is a relaxing activity for gorillas that can actually make them go into a trance.
Props to the gorilla for being a vegetarian! Gorillas are herbivorous and live off of fruit, leaves, and stems from plants that form the undergrowth of the forest floor.
Bamboo shoots tend to be the gorillas favorite food.
The food it eats and the dew it drinks off of leaves provide the gorilla with all the moisture it needs.
Gorilla groups that occupy the same small area are able to coexist peacefully! (Us humans should take a lesson from them!)
Each evening, gorillas build nests in trees for them to spend the night in.
The young will share its mother's nest up to the age of three. They have such a strong nesting instinct though, that they will expiriment with making their own nests at early ages.
The dominant male in a family group is called the silverback because his back hair will turn gray with age.
Humans are able to mingle with wild families of gorillas due to their easy going nature.
Unfortunately, gorillas are hunted for food and sport. Their greatest risk, though, comes from man's invasion of their habitat.
The forests upon which the gorilla's survival depends are being taken over by farmers and ranchers.
Fewer than 450 gorillas exist in the wild. |
