This is a page with facts you might find useful when thinking about getting a ferret. Some of them are just for fun, but others you can really take into consideration.
Ferret Facts:
- Ferrets eat specially formulated ferret food, but if you are in a bind, cat food can serve as a supplement, until you can get real food.
- Ferrets are just a domesticated strain of the European weasel, or Mustela putorius.
- The ferret got its name from the Latin word furritus, meaning "little fur theif".
- While many ferrets do have black feet, don't mistake them for the American black footed ferret, which is nearly extinct.

Ferret Care-
Feeding: Always keep fresh food and water available.
Grooming: I like to bathe my ferrets evey other week in the summer, because it helps to minimize their musky scent. It is easily done in the bathroom sink with ferret shampoo; the process takes less that five minutes. Also, toenail maintenance is a MUST.
Play time: At least two hours daily
Vaccinations: Canine Distemper and Rabies
Treats: My ferrets like a spoonfull of ice cream once in a while, but there are much healthier treats. Milk tends to give them the "runs", but small doses don't hurt, once in a while. You can feed your ferrets many types of treats that can be found in your house right now. Some examples include: hard boiled egg, cheerios cereal, raisins, bananas, canned cat food, and dried fruit. You can also purchase high quality snacks at the pet store. If in doubt, never fail to ask your vet.
Walks: Your ferret can be harness trained, and taken on walks through your neighborhood. Be sure that the weather is above 80 degrees and below 90, though, because ferrets are very susceptible to heat stroke. It can kill them in five minutes. If it is too cold, it may not be fun for the ferret.
Precautions: FERRET PROOF YOUR HOME!!! I don't know how much I can tell you that. Always be on the lookout for things that your ferret my choke on, or hurt itself on, not to mention things you may not want it with! Always double check your toys, furniture, etc. I once read an article in FERRETS magazine where a ferrets almost died in a toilet paper roll. The whole point of the article was that you can never be to prepared, in other words, expect the unexpected.
