The Dachshund dates back to the 15th century, where it was used as a hunting dog. Its name tells us this because "Dachs" means badger, and "hund" means dog. In other words, badger-dog is the correct name for the Dachshund, the small hunting dog, which seems to look like a hot dog with legs. Illustrations from earlier years show badgers being hunted by these dogs, with elongated bodies, short legs, and hound type ears.
There are three types of Dachshund, the Smooth Dachshund, the Longhair Dachshund, and the Wirehaired Dachshund. These dogs are now part of the American Kennel Club, and participate in shows for breeding every year. |
