For every domestic cat, there is a free roaming feral. Companion animal caregivers spend approximately $20 billion on their animals each year. Only 2 out of 10 kittens born in the USA will ever find a life long home. In the United States, 64% of animals arriving at shelters are euthanized. More than 10, 000 cats and dogs are killed each day, seven days a week. Americans spent 10 billion dollars on dog and cat food in 1996. In the US, only 4% of lost cats who enter animal shelters are returned to their owners. Your expenses as a caregiver to a dog for its average eleven year lifespan now equals $13,350. In 7 years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically be the source of 420,000 cats. In 1994, 56% of all American households had companion animals. These included: 54.2 million dogs, 59.4 million cats, 16 million birds, 12.2 million small animals, 7.3 million reptiles, 4.6 million marine fish, and 82,7 million freshwater fish.
