There are five main points when deciding what amount of calories your dog should be taking in daily. The first is size. Small dogs can burn more calories than larger dogs. Age is another factor. Less active and older dogs require fewer calories. A dog's metabolic and reproductive status also counts when determining this. An intact dog has a faster metabolism than a neutered dog, and therefore will burn calories easier. The activity level of the dog is another thing to consider. Dogs that work, or are athletes will easily go through calories. Finally, weather affects how many calories your pet will burn, which makes sense. You see, if a dog is outside playing a lot, then it will be getting more excercise, and burning more calories. If your dog lives outside all year round, feed it food with a higher count of calories, as it will easily burn them off. If your dog is housed inside all year round, you may want to lessen the caloric intake during the winter, as the dog will not be able to go outside a lot. All in all, if your dog burns a lot of calories, you should feed him a great amount. If your dog doesnt exercise a lot, and therefore won't burn many calories, don't give it too many. Remember though that there is no ideal weight for all dogs. It depends on their breed and size.
