A Bit About the Basenji:


Country of Origin: Zaire and Congo

AKC Group: Hound

Function: Companions, lure coursing

Life Span: 10 to 12 years

Color: Chestnut red, pure black, tricolor, and brindle

Coat: Short and fine with brillian luster

Grooming: Trim nails monthly, bathe every 4 to 6 weeks

Height: Males-17 inches; Females-16 inches

Weight: Males-24 lbs; Females- 22 lbs

Activity Level: High

Intellegence: Clever and independant thinker

Trainability: Does not respond well to traditional obedience, rewards provide best results

Watchdog Abilities: depends on owner's attentiveness, this dog does not bark to alert

Character: independant, curious, alert, cat-like

Home Environment: Fenced yard

Good with Children: if properly socialized

Good With other Pets: if properly socialized, although males tend to be agressive towards other males

Attitude Towards Strangers: aloof at first, then friendly
