Did You Know...

- The Bald Eagle has been the National Bird of the USA since 1782, symbolizing freedom, power, and majesty.

- It is found in Canada, the US, and northwest Mexico.

- Bald refers not to the white head, but to the piebald adult color. (black and white)

- The Bald Eagle's feet are equipped with spiny scales on the soles of the toes, and sharp talons for gripping slippery fish.

- The eagles preys on fish and smaller animals such as mice and rats, as well as larger animals.

- Food is plentiful in the summer, but in the winter, even scraps are a vital part of the Eagle's diet.

- The female eagle is larger than the male.

- An eagle hunts young sea otters by listening fo the noises they make while feeding in kelp beds.

- Research has shown that a bald eagle may cover 1,200 miles in migration!

- A bony extension of the scull (over the eagle's eyes) helps protect tehm from injury when catching and handling prey.

- The bald eagle's eyesight is four to eight times sharper than a human's.

- An eagle uses the same nest for her eggs year after year, and makes it bigger and bigger.

- Two eggs are usually born, sometimes 3, but rarely will you see four eggs.

- If the parent eagle canot provide for all her eggs, the older one will bully the weaker one until it dies of starvation. This ensures that the older chick will be raised successfully if food is scarce in future years.

I got my information on the bald eagle from Wildlife Fact files.
