Dogs who recieve a majority of their nutrition from a well balanced diet are in no danger of the protein in rawhide chews. The myth has gone on for years that this protein is not good for the dog, but it is only a fallacy. The bones can actually promote health, rather than diminishing it. They are recomended by vets as part of a dogs dental program. It has been shown in studies that when a dog chews a rawhide bone, plaque and tartar build up (associated with Canine dental and periodontal disease) is decreased. These diseases are linked with the development and progression of kidney diseases. So, in a way, when you feed your dog a rawhide chew, you are helping it prevent kidney disease, and tooth disease, too. Even in excessive amounts, a healthy dog should not have a bad reaction with rawhide bones. |
