Post-surgical care for a SPEY.

It is essential to follow the instructions for home care. This will ensure that you dog has the best possible chance of a speedy recovery and it lessens the incidence of accidents and complications.

Firstly the animal must be kept in a restricted area (e.g. kennel or room) in order to limit the movement. This is to reduce the incidence of breakdown of the incision. If the animal is allowed to ‘romp’ the incision line may tear and the intestines escape from the abdomen. This is a very grave situation and can be fatal if veterinary help is not sought immediately.

The incision (cut) must be cleaned at least twice a day. For this we recommend a solution of one teaspoon of DETTOLâ or SAVLONâ to a cup of water. Be sure to remove all debris and blood from the area.

The area you animal is kept in should be clean. One should use dilute bleach or a mild disinfectant. This is essential as the animal usually lies on the floor and the incision site could easily be contaminated if dirt and grime enter it.

Always give ALL the prescribed medication at the time it is supposed to be given. This is so that the medication would have the effect it is supposed to!

Keep in contact with the Veterinarian if you have questions/problems, including discolouration of the incision, depressed behavior, decreased appetite or any abnormal signs.

Always return on the day appointed to remove the sutures (stitches) as leaving them in longer would lead to infection and tissue reactions.
