The earliest I have on my CHATHAM line is abt 1750.

We start with a gentleman who spelled his name CHEATHAM:

George H. CHEATHAM (CHATHAM) who was born abt 1750 & died in 1801 (perhaps in North Carolina). He married ELEANOR "Nellie" ?? abt 1822 in Perry County, Alabama. She was born abt 1750 and died 1833.

They had 5 children:

Walker Chatham, 1792-1860 who married (1st) Sally Kendrick on May 26, 1818 in Putnam County, Georgia. Then he married (2nd) Abigail Turner, 1802- 11 Sep 1823.
Together, they had 6 children: James R., William Lafayette, Levi, John C., Josephine, & female.

George Kinchen Chatham, 28 Sep 1795 in Prince George County, VA married Cenia Gholson on July 15, ??. They had 12 children: Eliza Amanda, Emily Marion, John Gholson, Mary Malvina, William Eggleston, George Fletcher, Robert Walker, Roland Kinchen, Sara Jane, Elizabeth Frances, Maria Elenor, & Henry Harrison.

WILLIAM PARKS CHATHAM, born 1798 in Orange County, North Carolina and died 1887 in Carroll County, Mississippi. He married ELIZABETH WILSON, b 1799 in South Carolina, on Nov 19, 1822 in Perry County. They had 11 children: Narcissa Eliza married 1850(?) to A. Parham, George P. married Jinnie McCauley, JAMES A. CHATHAM born 1828 in Alabama & married Matilda Sawyer, Sarah married Wyatt Atkinson, Greene W. born in TN married Martha Sawyer Ford, John W., Margaret J. or G. married William Murphy, Nancy Abigail married Allen Rogers, William Cicero married Narcissus Clower, Robert Barnes married Emmie Clower, & Dogan.

Polly Chatham who married Hezikiah Davis.

Male Chatham

JAMES A. CHATHAM, 1828 Alabama - 1851(2) Carroll County, Mississippi, married CELIA ANN MATILDA SAWYER (1835 GA) on 1848 in Carroll County, Mississippi. (After James died, Celia Ann Matilda married a P. M. Grice on 3 Oct 1854).

On the Carroll County, Miss 1850 census, James Chatham and a young wife named Matilda, age 15 had an infant son named LEONTINE. Matilda was born in Georgia and James was born in Alabama.

Leake County, Miss 1860 census, P. M. Grice, age 37, wife Celia A. M. age 27 born in Georgia, who have the following children listed:

1. LEONTINE CHATHAM, age 10 born in Mississippi
2. William M. Grice, age 5 born in Mississippi
3. Lelia C. Grice, age 2 born in Mississippi

Leake County, Miss 1880 census, C. M. Grice (f) (widow) is listed as having the following children with her at the time:

1. Pickens, 18 years (son)
2. John, 16 years (son)
3. Emma, 12 years (daughter)
4. Carrie, 9 years (daughter)

James and Celia Ann Matilda had only one son:
LEONTINE AQUILLA CHATHAM.

Leontine "L.A." CHATHAM, 5 May 1850 in Mississippi. He died 11 Feb 1932 in Watson, Oklahoma.

Leake County, Miss 1880 census, L. A. CHATHAM is 30 years of age (farmer) and married to S. Chatham, 29 years of age (wife). Children listed:

1. Sallie, 8 years (daughter)
2. Lulu, 7 years (daughter)
3. Ida, 5 years (daughter)
4. Loretta, 3 years (daughter)
5. ROBERT CHATHAM, 6 months (son) born in January.

The S. stands for Sally nee PARAMORE. In the International Genealogical Index, her first name is listed as Cernansa PARAMORE, married to LA 9 Dec 1868 in Leake County, Mississippi. I believe this was his first wife.

L. A. second wife was Laura B. Weaver. No children.

L. A. married Victoria E. Brooks. She was born 23 Sep 1861 in Carthage, Leake County, Miss. She died 24 Oct 1914 & is buried at Pleasant Hill, Hatfield, Arkansas. Her father was Benjamin Franklin Brooks & mother was Nancy Myrtle Harris. L. A. and Victoria had the following children:

1. Pearl Chatham, 8 Feb 1887 in Athens, GA - Jun 1932 in Watson, Oklahoma. She married Will Wade.

2. Ciscero Chatham, 29 Oct 1888 in Athens, Howard County, Arkansas - 1904 or 1905. Never married.

3. Theodore Chatham, 10 Sep 1890 in Athens, Howard County, Arkansas - Dec 1941. He married Grace.

4. Monroe Chatham, 4 Feb 1892 in Athens, Howard County, Arkansas - 6 Jun 1944 in Orosi, California. He married Rhoda Tibbs on 24 Dec 1918.

5. Nola Chatham, 8 Sep 1893 in New Hope, Pike County, Arkansas - 20 Mar 1971 in Modesta, California. She married Jim Burke.

6. Benjamin Chatham, 15 Jul 1895 in New Hope, Pike County, Arkansas - 9 Apr 1916. He married Rhoda Tibbs.

7. George Chatham, 16 Jan 1897 in New Hope, Pike County, Arkansas - 4 Aug 1964 in Oklahoma. He married Irma Daniels.

8. Clebern Lacefield Chatham, 13 Jun 1900 in Athens, Howard County, Arkansas - 23 Jan 1984 in Modesto, California. He married Goldie Burke on 11 Jan 1936.

Now, the 5th child of L. A. CHATHAM and SALLY PARAMORE is my great-grandfather. ROBERT BRUCETON CHATHAM was born Jan 1880 in Leake County, Mississippi. He married MINNIE BELL THORNTON. Her father was ISAAC WEBSTER (Webb) THORNTON and her mother was AMERICA MILLER.

They had my grandfather, COY ADIS CHATHAM who was born 13 Jul 1902 in Athens, Howard County, Arkansas and died 16 May 1981 in Smithville, Oklahoma. He married my grandmother, CLARA MAE PHILLIPS who was born 22 Dec 1905 in Red Bay, Alabama & died on 8 Nov 1991 in Mena, Arkansas. They were married at the old homestead place in Smithville, Oklahoma on the front porch on 23 Aug 1925. CLARA's parents were: GABRIEL (G. C. or GABE) PHILLIPS and HATTIE EMALINE SHEPPARD.

They had 5 children:

Raymond P. who married Elouise. They had 3 kids: Ray who is married to Cheryl Jacobson, Mike and Cheryl.

Charles Coleman Chatham who married (1st) one of my dad's twin sisters, Billye Colleen Hopkins. They had 2 kids: Tanya and Russ. Then Charles married Val (from Germany) and they had 2 boys: Scott and Todd.

Doyle Chatham who married (1st) Shirley and had one son, Ivan Coy Chatham. Then married Barbara and they had 3 children: Gene, Pam and Candy.

Then mother's twin sister, Betty Sue Chatham.

My mother PEGGY LOU CHATHAM who married my father, STEPHEN HOLLEY HOPKINS.
