I highly recommend A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. Dr. Hawking discusses the origin of the universe from the perspective of twentieth century discoveries in physics, specifically principles of quantum mechanics and gravity. Although he goes into details on abstract subjects such as sub-atomic particles and the curving of space under the influence of gravity, he writes in such a clear fashion (and without complicated mathematics) that non-physicists can understand some of the most sophisticated concepts of modern science and ponder their meaning. Anyone who wonders where the universe came from, how it evolves and how the physical world relates to the individual will gain a great deal from the insights of one of our greatest scientists. The 1996 edition is updated for new scientific evidence and includes a fascinating added chapter on the possibility of time travel through what are called "wormholes" in space.
