Alanis Morisette
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, the latest album by Alanis Morisette, is rougher around the edges than her previous mega-hit, Jagged Little Pill. While her diehard fans are likely to immensely enjoy her evolution as a songwriter as exhibited in her new songs, the album is unlikely to generate as much adulation for her as did her last one. With less pop and more rock, Alanis risks alienating some of her more casual fans, but she sure has a lot to say to anyone who will listen. Standouts on the album include Baba, an indictment of spiritual teachers; the popular Thank U; opening track Front Row, about relationships in the career world; and Unsent, a love letter to past boyfriends. Alanis is a real poet, with lyrics that stand on their own without music but are often hard to understand on first hearing. Her music should be judged more as a spiritual and emotional journey than as pop music. If you would like to hear a sample of or buy this album, click the album cover below.
Oasis
Apparently able to deliver a consistently great rock sound, the 1997 effort of Oasis, Be Here Now, is possibly the best rock album of that prolific year. A little harder-edged than their previous smash (What's The Story) Morning Glory, Be Here Now is more reminiscent of their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe, which contained the brilliant songs Supersonic and Live Forever. Be Here Now's first two songs, D'You Know What I Mean and My Big Mouth, are rock storytelling at its best; with the band's heavy instrumentals, most will need the accompanying lyrics to truly appreciate the songwriting craft here. Track 7, Fade In-Out, is simply the best song on the album. With the band's gritty approach to music (and life), Oasis remains inspiring, entertaining and the best the British have to offer in this decade.
