Weekend Report
October 31, 2004

Happy Halloween

The Nasdaq was up almost 60 points for the week while the DJIA was up 270 points and the S&P 500 was up 35. In fact, most indices were up a few percent for the week. The Dow Jones Composite saw 61 up and only 4 down for the week.

The final October University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index was 91.7, falling 2.5 points from September's final reading (Index, 1985=100). The current conditions index rose slightly, however, to 104.0 in October versus 103.7 in September. The index for consumer expectations fell to 83.8 from 88.0.

Consumer sentiment has fallen steadily since July and now sits at its lowest level since May 2004. July's reading was the highest since January and the June-July rise was the first back-to-back rise since October-November 2003.

You can find the past year's sentiment numbers at the bottom of the Charts and Graphs page. And don't forget to check the Support/Resistance, Weekly Economic Calendar and A/D Oscillators pages.

The Nasdaq Short Interest page is updated once a month based on the reported numbers as of the middle of the month(usually the 15th). As you can see, the SI declined for the first time since July, but it is still 9% higher than the January figure.
