Hi Everyone:
I was a bit surprised at the action this week. But we still dont have the volume. My feeling is that weve run out of gas and I fully expect a correction this week. Some Naz technicals indicate possible upside
but I believe getting past the 2180s would be very difficult without a pullback. The short term Advance/Decline issues seem to have topped out. But the New Highs/Lows looks good and the short-term Up/Down Moving Average for volume doesnt look too bad either.
Larger caps seem to be stronger than small and mid caps recently. The SP 500 hit a 4 year high and the Naz ended on Friday at the highest closing price for the year. Both the RUS 2000 and the SP SC 600 both hit all time highs earlier in the week but both seemed to have run out of steam and ended virtually flat as did the SP MC 400.
One thing I noticed was that there seemed to be some rotation
see the top groups below. I just dont see a sustained rally being led by these types of groups.
For the week, the Dow Super Sectors were 9 up 1 down(Oil)
Top DJ Groups were Industrial Suppliers +7.03% Autos +6.36% Home Improvement Retailers +4.66%...The worst groups were Distillers/Vintners -3.53% Gold Mining -3.03% Healthcare Providers -2.64%
Some of the other top groups for the week included Airlines and Business Training. Seems to me that there is no substance in Autos and Airlines
two industries that are down the tubes. Semis, Internet and Biotech did well though
it would be nice to see them as the top 3 IMO. As a side note, Restaurants did very well on Friday.
Market direction seems to be a tough call lately
Maybe its just a gut feeling, but Im slightly bearish this week. If we finish green for July...which I think is "iffy" it would only be the second month this year that the Naz closed up...The other month was May.
Also, even though GE and AAPL had decent reports
guidance was not encouraging. Hopefully, others will see a brighter future coming up; e.g. MCD
Greenspan gives his semi-annual report to Congress on Wednesday and Thursday. I dont expect any surprises, but it is the last time he will appear before them
So you never know?
A/D/U Issues for the week:
Nasdaq 1884/1399/91
NYSE 2078/1399/104
AMEX 660/421/54
The DJIA A/D/U was 26/4/0 led by MCD up over 8%. The DJ Composite was 49/16/0 and the Major DJ Groups were 75/24/1.
