Ryan and Laura were just leaving Pallet City when Vulpix heard a noise. Her ears perked up as she searched for the source of
the sound. "Vulpix, vulpix!" she cried, spotting it. Both Ketchums looked up. There, eating some long grass, was a pokémon.
Ryan held up his pokédex. "Nidoran," said the mechanical voice. "A poisonous pokémon. Although small, its venomous barbs
render this pokémon dangerous. Its small horns mark this specimen as female."
Ryan and Laura looked at each other. They had both had the same thought. "Who gets to catch her?" Laura asked.
"Here," Ryan said, reaching into his pocket, "I think I have a few coins to flip… hey!" Nidoran had spotted Vulpix and
Sandshrew and had started to run off. Ryan and Laura ran after her. "First one to catch up gets to catch her!" Ryan called.
Laura, being older and with longer legs, was ahead of Ryan, but Sandshrew and Vulpix had decided to race too, and
Sandshrew, with his huge claws, was far ahead. They were running near a beach when Ryan tripped and Sandshrew ran back
to help. Laura would have too, but she saw that Ryan wasn't hurt, just delayed, and if she didn't catch Nidoran neither of them
would. So she ran on.
She caught up quickly as Nidoran was stopped at a solid wall of bushes. "Gotcha," she muttered. "Vulpix, go!" Vulpix leapt at
Nidoran, but Nidoran caught her in midair with a well-aimed scratch attack. Vulpix roared in pain. Nidoran ran off. "Hey!"
Laura yelled. "Vulpix, quick attack!" Vulpix was ahead of Nidoran in a flash. Vulpix attacked Nidoran with a movement faster
than the eye could see, a quick attack. "Again!" Laura cried, and Vulpix attacked again.
Laura could see that Nidoran was weak. She grabbed an empty pokéball, pressing the button to enlarge it. Nidoran jumped at
Vulpix, trying to use a tackle attack. Instead, the flying pokéball hit her in midair. It fell to the ground at Vulpix's paws.
Laura and Vulpix stared intently at the ball as it shook. Nidoran may have been caught, but she could still break free. The ball
rocked back and forth once, twice. Then it stopped moving.
"All right!" Laura grabbed the ball and held it high in the air. "I caught a pokémon! Yes!" Vulpix just grinned.

*****************************

Ryan groaned. He wasn't hurt, but now there was no way he could catch the Nidoran. He saw Sandshrew standing over him,
looking concerned. "What did I trip on, Sandshrew?" he asked.
"Shrew sandshrew, sandshrew," Sandshrew said.
"What do you mean I don't want to know?" Ryan asked, sitting up. He realized he had misinterpreted Sanshrew's expression: it
wasn't concern, it was fear.
Sandshrew pointed behind his trainer. Ryan turned around. There, hovering behind him, was a Staryu. A water-type pokémon,
and one of the most powerful. The feared enemy of all ground-type pokémon. "Uh, oh," he said.
"Sandshrew," Sandshrew suggested, shuddering visibly.
"Catch it? Good idea! Sandshrew, go!"
Sandshrew stared at the Staryu; glad that Ryan was blocking any shot it might take. "Sand? Sandshrew sandshrew!"
"Well, of course! It would be a waste of a pokéball to try catching it at full strength."
Sandshrew realized that there would be no way to get rid of the Staryu unless he fought it. "Sandshrew shrew," he agreed
reluctantly.
"Okay. Sandshrew, go!"
Sandshrew attacked Staryu with a well-aimed scratch. He got in another two without resistance. "Huh?" said Ryan, "Staryu's
supposed to be powerful! I must have made a mistake." But when he checked out his pokédex, it was quite clear.
"Staryu. A water type pokémon. It is extremely powerful. Do not attack it near water with ground, rock or fire type pokémon.
It can powerlessly regenerate any appendage lost in battle.
"Well, maybe I got lucky and found a lazy one." But almost on cue, a splash of water hit Staryu and he retaliated Sandshrew's
scratch with a powerful tackle attack. Another splash hit and it used Water gun. By this time, Sandshrew was weak, but when
Staryu tried to tackle again, Sandshrew managed to get a scratch in that Staryu didn't expect. It was thrown into the sand and
all the water was absorbed. Ryan knew that now was the time to catch him. He took a pokéball from his belt, enlarged it then
threw it. The ball shook once, then twice, then three times…
It broke open and out came an even angrier Staryu. It used two water guns almost simultaneously then a powerful tackle.
When this was done, he noticed that both Staryu and Sandshrew were on the ground, very tired. "That’s what you get when
you take on a trainer," Ryan said, than used a second pokéball to catch Staryu. This time it shook four times and then stopped
moving. "Yes! We caught a pokémon!" Ryan said, holding up Sandshrew proudly.
"Shrew," said Sandshrew exhaustedly, then collapsed. The three of them went to find Laura, Ryan walking, Staryu in his
pokéball, and Sandshrew asleep in Ryan's arms.

*****************************

Ryan soon caught up with Laura, who was coming back looking for him. "Sorry I left you back there," Laura said. "It was just,
well, it was my first chance to catch a pokémon, and Nidorans are pretty rare, especially the females, and…"
"Never mind," Ryan said. "I caught one too."
"A Nidoran?"
"No, a pokémon. A Staryu."
"You caught a water pokémon? A Staryu?" Laura cried. "With only one ground pokémon? That's a bit too risky, isn't it?"
"It attacked me!" Ryan said defensively. "Come on, let's get to Viridian City, they have a Pokémon Centre there." He held up
the exhausted (and wet) Sandshrew.
They hurried on. Soon they came to Viridian City. It was a beautiful place, with trees everywhere, and a most welcome sight: a
huge Pokémon Centre.
The pair entered. The Centre was as huge inside as it was outside. They made their way to the desk. A middle-aged woman in
a doctor's uniform greeted them. "I'm Doctor Joy," she said pleasantly. "How can I help you?"
"We have two pokémon in need of help, and two who just need regenerating," Ryan said, handing over Sandshrew and
releasing Staryu.
Doctor Joy placed both of them on a cart carried by a pair of Chanseys, who quickly pushed it through a pair of swinging
doors and out of sight. "How did that happen?" she asked, gesturing to the door.
"They fought each other," Laura explained, while giving Vulpix and Nidoran to another Chansey for regeneration.
"Are you new trainers?" Doctor Joy asked.
"Well, we just started, but-"
"Then let me give you some advice. If you only have pokémon what are weak against the water-type- don't fish!"
Before Ryan could explain, a nurse hurried up to Doctor Joy. "Doctor! That Parasect in surgery needs your help!" he cried. Joy
hurried off.
Laura sighed and sat down. "So, what should we do while we wait?" she wondered out loud.
Ryan's reply was interrupted again.
"To protect the world from devastation!"
"To destroy the evils of truth and love!"
"No, you idiot, that's not right! It was 'Surrender now…'"
"I'm an idiot? You forgot to introduce us!"
"What?" Ryan said to himself.
"It's Team Rocket!" Laura whispered. "But how is that possible? Dad broke them up twenty years ago!"
"Well, they obviously haven't been back very long, since they can't remember their motto," Ryan observed. Laura nodded.
While they were whispering, the shorter Rocket, a woman, had pulled out a piece of paper and read it over. They started
again. "Prepare for trouble!" she yelled.
"And make that double," her partner replied.
"To protect the world from devastation!"
"To unite all peoples within our nation!"
"To destroy the evils of truth and love!"
"To extend our reach to the stars above!"
"Amber!"
"Nick!"
"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!"
"Surrender now or prepare to fight!"
"That's right!" said a large Mankey who had just appeared. It took Laura and Ryan a few seconds to realize: he was speaking
English!
Ryan and Laura were just staring. "Miss, we're done with your Vulpix here… I'm sorry, can I help you?" A nurse had just
come out and noticed Team Rocket.
"Yes," Amber said sweetly. "You can start by handing over all your pokémon, if you don't mind." She sneered.
"Vulpix?" Vulpix yelped.
"What are you talking about?" the nurse said, alarmed. "We don't have any valuable pokémon here at the moment." He reached
under the desk, probably pushing the button to call the police.
"Don't play dumb," Nick said angrily. "We know every Pokémon Centre has Chanseys everywhere. That Vulpix looks good,
we'll take it too." He reached for Vulpix, who backed off.
Laura snapped out of it. "You can't take Vulpix! Ember attack, now!"
Nick dodged out of the way and ran toward the door. "We'll take what we want in here, then!" Amber and Mankey followed.
Ryan knew that Sandshrew, Staryu, Nidoran, the injured Parasect, numerous Chanseys, and who knew what else were at risk.
He charged in after them, with Laura and Vulpix following.
Mankey and two other pokémon, a Zubat and a Grimer, had backed Doctor Joy into a corner. Amber and Nick were looking
over the room, apparently looking for any useful pokémon. Nick was trying to subdue a Poliwag, with limited success. He was
having trouble staying awake.
"A Staryu!" Amber cried. "Perfect!" She started toward Staryu.
"Staryu! Water gun attack!" Ryan called. Staryu struggled up and fired. Unfortunately, Staryu was too injured to do much
good. He succeeded in driving Amber back a few steps, but that was it.
"Sandshrewwww!" Sandshrew yelled, jumping in front of Amber. He tried to scratch her, but the Zubat who had been guarding
Doctor Joy flew in to protect her.
"Zubat! Bite!" Zubat bit Sandshrew, but managed to get pretty scratched up in the process. The fight could go either way.
"Grimer! Go!" Nick called, and Grimer also broke off and came after Sandshrew.
"Hey, that's not fair!" Laura objected. "The rules say only two pokémon can fight in a battle at a time!"
"Yeah? Well, cry me a river. What are you going to do about it?"
"This! Vulpix, go!" Vulpix jumped in front of Grimer. "Vulpix! Quick attack!" Vulpix attacked Grimer, who gave no outward
reaction. Of course, it's always hard to tell what in-organic pokémon are thinking.
"Grimer, poison gas attack!" Vulpix was knocked backward by the gas, and she started coughing. Vulpix was poisoned! This
fight, too, could go either way.
Doctor Joy, seeing this, grabbed a bunch of pokéballs off the shelves at random and threw them. "Freee-eee-eeee!" screamed
the Butterfree from the first one.
Ryan seized the opportunity. "Butterfree, sleep powder that Zubat!" The confused Butterfree obliged. Zubat, however, blew the
powder back at Butterfree with his wings, and Butterfree fell asleep instead. While Zubat was distracted with this, Sandshrew
slashed Zubat. Sandshrew was winning!
Doctor Joy had thrown another pokéball. "Rattata!" yelled the irritated Rattata who emerged. Before Laura could get Rattata
to use its hyper fang attack (they had decided if Team Rocket wasn't going to play by the rules, neither would they) Mankey
had started fighting, stopping Rattata from doing anything but defend himself.
Doctor Joy threw yet another pokéball. This one wouldn't help very much, it was a Kakuna. The next ball was empty.
"Yes!" Ryan exclaimed. Sandshrew had defeated Zubat. He grinned at Amber. "If you still want to ignore the rules, I'd be
happy to help defeat that Grimer!"
"Not so fast! I have another competitor. Mankey, go!"
"I'd help if I could!" Mankey said in between Rattata's powerful hyper fangs. "I'm busy at the moment!" The Rattata was
stronger than it looked!
Amber, thinking fast, grabbed a pokéball off the shelf and threw it. A Pikachu came out. "Pikachu, thundershock attack!"
Pikachus don't exactly have a reputation of obeying trainers. Pikachu just looked at her. He was obviously not amused. Ryan
smiled. "Sandshrew, use your slash attack on Grimer!"
This wasn't even against the rules, because Vulpix had just been overpowered by the poison and fainted. Sandshrew slashed
Grimer, but it didn't seem to hurt him at all. He just removed the sludge from the reach of Sandshrew's claws.
"Here!" Doctor Joy said, appearing behind Ryan. "We keep these stocked for emergencies. I think this qualifies!" She handed
Ryan an odd pokéball-like object that was glowing.
"What is it?" Ryan asked.
"It's a TM. This is number 28. It teaches pokémon to dig."
Ryan, who had known what a TM looked like but not which one this was, accepted it. He pressed the button on the side, and
a beam of white light lanced from the TM to Sandshrew. "Sandshrew, dig attack!" Sandshrew was happy to oblige. He dug a
hole in the floor of the Pokémon Centre, appearing just below Grimer with a powerful ground attack.
"Hey!" said a nurse. "I just had that floor re-done!"
Laura suddenly noticed that Mankey had defeated the Rattata and was sneaking up on Sandshrew. "Nidoran, go!" she cried.
Nidoran tackled the surprised Mankey from behind. Mankey and Nidoran both started using an uncontrollable volley of
scratches. Soon both Nidoran and Mankey were down.
Sandshrew had finally defeated Grimer. Amber and Nick, enraged by their defeat, tried to attack Ryan and Laura. "No way!"
Ryan said. "Staryu, use water gun and tackle at the same time!" Staryu, who was finally rested enough to fight, came at them
with a blast that knocked them right out of the building and out of sight.
"Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off agaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain!" they yelled as they flew off.
"'Again?'" Laura asked, grinning.
"Don't ask me," Ryan replied.
Ryan, Laura, Doctor Joy, and the nurse surveyed the scene. There were holes in the floor, an injured Rattata lying moaning on
the ground, a Butterfree sleeping peacefully, a lot of patients looking disoriented, and sludge all over the place. However, they
all knew it could have been much worse if they hadn't fought.
A bunch of Chanseys rushed in to help the injured pokémon. Doctor Joy sighed. Turning to Ryan and Laura, she said, "As bad
as this looks, you just saved every pokémon here. How can we ever thank you?" She brightened up. "I have just the thing! This
Parasect here has no trainer. It was saved by the SPCP from a trainer who whipped it to control it and kept it out in battle until
it was almost dead. It probably won't obey you for a while, but it's the best we can offer."
This was serious; the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Pokémon only interfered with trainers if it was absolutely
necessary. Laura looked at Ryan. "Pokémon usually trust younger trainers better. You can have it."
"No, Staryu is more powerful than either of your pokémon. You can have it."
"You did a lot more in the fight. You deserve it more." Both Laura and Ryan wanted Parasect, but neither of them wanted to be
selfish.
"Doctor Joy already thanked me! She gave me a TM to teach Sandshrew to dig. You take it."
Laura, deciding that accepting Parasect wouldn't be selfish after all, agreed. "All right. Let's get our pokémon healed." She
gestured to Vulpix, who was on a stretcher carried by two Chanseys.
"Right. Next challenge; Viridian Forest. Shouldn't be too hard."
Little did they know…
