IRON HAND CONDITIONING AND TRAINING

Iron palm refers to numerous techniques developed within martial arts. These techniques are typically meant to condition the hands to allow a practitioner to throw very powerful blows without injury to his or her body. Iron palm is not a specific term as there are many different ways of achieving these results. Consequently, many martial arts families teach a system of iron palm, and many disagree with each other as to whose system is best. Furthermore, many teachers treat their specific iron palm system as a closely guarded family secret so it can be difficult to acquire specific information about system without agreeing to not share that information freely.

In any case, iron palm development occurs in two parts. The first is to strengthen the hand. This can be achieved by repeatedly striking hard objects, breaking the bones in the hands so they heal back thicker, or chemically treating the hands, usually with plant derivatives. The second part is to learn how to strike with more power. In other words, hard hands are not enough, one must be able to apply that hardness with power and intent. Iron palm development can be truly substantial. Many Iron palm practitioners can break stacks of boards and bricks. Combined with a knowledge of vulnerable spots on the human body, a well developed Iron palm practitioner is easily a lethal opponent.

Palm Strike: The First Strike Dropped from Neck LevelOne variant of iron palm training consists of years of repetitive downward striking with all surfaces of the hand upon rough cloth bags filled with increasingly harder materials. In order of development (and difficultly)

Internal Iron Palm Method

Backhand Strike: The Second Strike Dropped in sequenceThere are two types of iron palm training methods: internal and external. The article mentioned the tools used for internal iron palm, which begins with the mung bean bag. The hand is dropped from neck level at the speed of gravity pushing on the arm (meaning no extra thrust by the trainer) on to the bag. This is done (depending on the style of Kung Fu) usually using five different hand positions: palm, back of hand, knife hand strike, claw hand and then press palm. This occurs for fifty strikes on each hand strike for 250 total strikes per training session. The time it takes to complete the 250 strikes is the time the person much use as a gage to massage his or her hands with Iron Palm liniment(Dit Da Jow). So if it takes you 10 minutes to perform the 250 strikes, then you massage your hands for 10 minutes using the liniment. Then you perform a Chi kung Meditation for 10 minutes where you belly breath and concentrate on forcing chi to your palms. This is usually done by concentrating on fire in your belly as you inhale; when you exhale you concentrate on the fire going up through your arms and down through your palms.

Why is Iron Palm Training Important?

The many open hand techniques used in Kung Fu require a conditioned hand in order for the techniques to work. Deflecting open hand technics require a hard surface or the person executing the techniques risk injury. Besides, when the Kung Fu martial artist gets older and loses some of his or her speed, he or she will rely more on their internal power and less on the external for survival.

Iron Palm Liniment (Sometimes referred to as "Dit Da Jow"):

The Iron Palm liniment used is not a standard formula like motor oil. Iron Palm liniment varies by not only Kung Fu style, but by the actual masters themselves. Most formulas are guarded secrets even in today's society. If you look hard enough on the internet, some masters (like Master Brian Gray) have posted the herbs they have used to make their liniment. I can tell you what to look for, or look out for. A good Iron Palm liniment is toxic, and can never be taken internally. There is basically three things Iron Palm liniment herbs do for the user: 1) numB and soothe bruises and sore tissue, 2) reduce swelling by dispersing the stagnant blood and promote circulation, 3) Bring Chi to your palms like an Acupuncture needle does. A good solution feels good and can reduces bruises in half overnight. Using a good Iron Palm liniment will determine your success in your Iron Palm training program.

Iron Palm Three Step Process:

Striking the bag.
Massaging Iron Palm Liniment into your hands for the same amount of time spent hitting the bag.
Chi Kung Meditation for the same amount of time spent on massaging your hands. One such Meditation posture could be the Standing Ball Holding Posture.
Which hand should I train?

That depends on the style of Iron Palm you are training in, internal verses external. In some external forms, you are taught to train only one hand. Some masters teach right-handed students to train their left-hand, while others teach their students to train their right-hand, or dominant hand. From personal experience, I had an external Japanese Stylist instructor who had trained his right-hand (using the Makiwara) so that he could punch 50 lbs barbell plates and knock the person holding it backwards ten feet. His right-hand did not even match his left, and was only good for punching, as he learned to write with his left-hand.

Internal Iron Palm training trains both hands equally. The Iron Palm student will always have a dominant hand even when he or she trains both hands, but the overall conditioning of both hands should be the student's goal. This is not to say that all Internal Iron Palm masters train both hands, because some masters feel that training both hands developes two mediocre Iron Palm hands instead of one powerful dominant hand. In this case, I recommend that you go with what your master teaches you.

Other Thoughts:

Iron Palm in itself, is a great form of Meditation, but should not be considered a stand alone form of self-defense. In the Kung Fu world, Iron Palm is just another training tool for self improvement. Whether an Iron Palm practitioner is into Boxing, Savate, Mixed Martial Arts, or any other style of self-defense, the person must have the fighting skills necessary to put themselves into position to execute their Iron Palm. So use the Iron Palm training as a tool to aid you in your training of your particular fighting style.

Sijo Grandmaster Tiger of the Asian Shan Fu Jow Org who teaches Internal Iron Palm as part of the traditional family system stated that the hand must make contact with the object in order to break it, and that it is purely for Self-defense and not recommended for sports fighting. Great Grand Master Yue famous for his skills in the practice of Iron Palm, Poison Hand and Iron Vest states that Iron Palm falls short when it comes to breaking flexible objects, and that it is simplier to break a brick than a flexible piece of wood. Why? Because the Iron Palm slap can move anything one half inch. If an object can flex farther than that, it will not break. So do not think that Iron Palm will help you in the ring with a gloved hand other than overall hand and wrist conditioning.
