Why Meditate?

This question has been asked many times and the answers are endless. So, I will give you just a few reasons for meditation.

1) To gain an understanding of ones inner most self.

2) To establish a well grounded connection between yourself and the universe in which we dwell.

3) To access more of our potentail on the plains of reality, spiritually, our conscious, and unconscious plains.

4) To develope an inner peace and tranquility.

5) To seek what we have known and lost, to recover and preserve that knowledge.

These are just a few reasons I find meditation to be an absolute neccessity. In order to strive for an uplifted plato of inner peace and the ability to learn through untainted realms. Which will allow us to deal with and understand the world and it's creatures. TO BALANCE ONESELF!

For the basic practice of breath counting one must realize althought this practice sounds simplified and maybe even a bit silly, it takes practice and commitment to learn how to focus your mind on a single task. Our minds have always been allowed to roam at will, in random thought. This exercise will teach you control on focused objectives.

Breath Counting-
I would suggest to start with 15 minute practice sessions and build up as you feel comfortable. I can't stress enough the importance of regular practice habits. You will obtain the best results if you practice daily. Set a time where there will be no interruptions... turn off the phone, and if you have pets go to a room where you can close the door to keep yourself isolated from distractions. It may help to set the mood by lighting candles, incense, or playing soft music.

1) Set an alarm clock or timer for 15 minutes, then place in under a pillow or wrap it in a blanket (so that it won't startle you when it ges off).

2) Postion yourself to be comfortable: Sitting, Standing, Laying and keep in mind that you will be in this position for the duration of the set time.

3) Relax... you will start to count as you exhale (in fours, one through 4, then starting over with one and continueing on through out the duration of your timer.

Your goal is to focus on your breath count (number of exhales)... when other thoughts enter your mind (don't become upset or frustrated) just pull your train of thought back to your breathing and count.

The four paths of Meditation-
There are many types of meditation but there are only four classes of meditating.that are a common denominator of all the types. These classifactions are refered to as the paths or approaches to meditation and are as follows:

The path by means of Intellect- This path appeals to many including mystics. you use your intellect for a more directed, focua on understanding of your thought process and your will. this is what most refer to as "a single thought awakening" persay a merging of thought and will awareness. this may be achieved by training yourself to block out random thoughts. It takes time, but the benefits are priceless. You will gain clearer insight to your goals/objectives. A crisper look at the two realities. Breath counting is an example of focus training.

The path by means of Emotion- This pathway to meditation is less structured and more concintrated upon ones feelings and impressions of those feelings. Through concentrating on your feelings for any given thing, be it a person, object, or problem. You can gain an insight of yourself through deep evaluations of your own impressions. Using this path you gain a better understanding of your innerself, which in turn gives you better understanding of others.A thought to ponder... the next time you find yourself saying, "I know how you feel" ask yourself "Do you really?" so, stop for a moment and explore your own feelings, and what is real to you. Don't loose yourself by becoming numb or blind but if you don't understand yourself, you will have difficulty understand and feeling for others. Learning to relate to yourself will teach you how to relate to others.

The path by means of Body- This pathway to meditation is for one to learn to be aware of one's body and it's movements. To hieghten this awareness during meditation. This awareness totally engulfs the concsiousness to the point of excluding anything else. This is commonly performed through dance. It is believed that if a person is consumed in dance, one becomes whole with theirself by being completely absorbed in one concentration (the dance) this intergrates and strengthens ones personality.

The path by means of Action- This path deals with the learning of how to "BE" how to perceive and how to relate to the world while performing a specified type of task or skill. For example with musicians, becoming their instrument. It is a form of deep and total concentration and thought on the task at hand.

We are individuals, therefore must choose the path that feels right to us. Take your time and try all four paths to determine which feels right for you. Remember that most forms of meditation include a number of paths in combination and there is no Best Way (no one way is better than the other) it is simply a question of which is most comfortable to you. It is up to you to decide and develope what works for you.
