ESPECIALLY WANTED: If you happen to come accross a good article on "worthy charities," please tell me where to find it and I will try to get permission to publish it here.

My own idea is an international "World Charity List" program which helps individuals and corporations determine where to invest with the "greatest long-term effect" on humanity and the environment. Such topics as geographic and economic need, lack of recognition, efficiency of spending, and long-term benefits need to be systematized. Corporations can then pledge systematically a portion of their profits according to the guidelines of such a list, in return for the advertising benefits. For example, if you have an opportunity to patronize a casino or a bank which systematically donates a tenth of its profits according to the "World Charity List," vs. a competitor which donates insignificantly and only to further its interests, which would you choose? This can begin with some kind of identifying logo usable by participating businesses, similar to the green environmental "seal of approval" on a box of tissues. Once the idea catches on, this will put pressure on the competition--until perhaps in a couple hundred years it may become a standard practice. The guidelines need not be restrictive: a certain percentage of the pledged donations may be local, but a certain percentage must be international. For example: a Third World Dictator goes to Monte Carlo for his fun, and to Switzerland for his banking, and the profits are left with the European royalty. Shouldn't the Third World get some? I will elaborate on this if anyone is interested.

WE LOVE TO HEAR FROM READERS. We will publish your comments both pro and con, and even give you free advertising space, if you so desire. Please find contact information on our FEEDBACK page.
