1846 -- The Opening of the Applegate Trail.

1847-1851 -- Alleged massacres of travelers on the Applegate Trail by Modocs.

1851 -- The first exedition against the Modocs.

Summer 1852 -- The Modocs attack travellers on the Applegate Trail.

31 August 1852 -- The Battle of Tule Lake.

8 November 1852 -- The Ben Wright Affair.

1864 -- The Steele and Huntington Treaties.

1865 -- Klamath Reservation established.

November 1867 -- Old Schonchin's Modocs settle on Klamath Reservation; Captain Jack's Modocs refuse.

December 1869 -- Meacham convinces Captain Jack's Modocs to settle on Klamath Reservation.

April 1870 -- All the Modocs leave Klamath Reservation and return to the Lost River country.

November 1871 -- The Ivan Applegate conference.

January-February 1872 -- The 1872 Petitions. Petitions from southern Oregon urge the removal of the Modocs to Klamath Reservation.

25 November 1872 -- Superintendent Odeneal sends word to the Modocs to meet him at Linkville on the 28th.

26 November 1872 -- The Modocs refuse Odeneal's demand.

27 November 1872 -- Odeneal sends to Fort Klamath for troops.

28 November 1872 -- Troops leave Fort Klamath for Lost River.

29 November 1872 -- The Lost River Fight. Troops attack Captain Jack's village; citizens attack Hooker Jim's village on the other side of Lost River.

29-30 November 1872 -- The Lost River Murders. Hooker Jim's band murders settlers.

4 December 1872 -- The Hot Creeks Incident. The Hot Creek Modocs try to reach Klamath Reservation, but a mob from Linkville prevents them.

8 December 1872 -- Fairchild and Captain Jack confer.

12 December 1872 -- The Hot Creek Modocs join Captain Jack. The First Correspondent, Robert Bogart of the San Francisco Chronicle, arrives at the front.

21 December 1872 -- Modocs ambush a supply train on its way to the soldiers at Lost River.

17 January 1873 -- The First Battle for the Stronghold. Troops fail to take the Modocs' stronghold.

22 January 1873 -- The Modocs attack wagons carrying grain and force the soldiers to withdraw; troops under Captain Bernard recapture wagons.

25 January 1873 -- The Peace Commission. In Washington D.C. an Oregon delegation headed by Elisha Applegate calls on Columbus Delano, Secretary of the Interior, to propose a peace commission to the Modocs.

30 January 1873 -- A conference between Fairchild and Captain Jack aborts.

11 February 1873 -- Gillem takes over from Wheaton.

14 February 1873 -- A Grand Jury in Jacksonville indicts eight Modocs for murder.

15 February 1873 -- Preliminary Peace Commission Meeting. Jesse Applegate and Samuel Case meet; they receive a letter from Governor Grover.

18 February 1873 -- The Peace Commissioners hold a meeting at Fairchild's Ranch.

20-21 February 1873 -- The Preliminary Conference.

22 February 1873 -- Bob Whittle's Conference.

24-25 February 1873 -- The Fairchild Conference.

28 February to 1 March 1873 -- The Fairchild-Steele Conference.
